22-week of March 13

Week of March 13, 2017
THIS WEEK IN FIRST GRADE, WE…
- Presented at the All School Meeting for the whole school. The focus for the
meeting was how to show others how to help people feel welcomed, included
and a part of the Williams community. We also wanted to highlight ways I
which we can be kind to others. We will be sending you a link, so you can
see the video of our presentation.
- Learned how to use a tape measure. We learned that it is easier to use a
tape measure when you are measuring items that are rounded or curved and
do not have a straight edge. We were able to work with a partner and
measure our wrists, elbows, ankles, and heads. The first graders thought this
was great fun and worked well with one another.
- Explored how to collect data and then how to make sense of what we found.
We listed ideas of questions we might want to ask of our classmates, for
example: What is your favorite color?, What is your favorite dinner food?,
What is your favorite sport to play?, etc. We learned that you need to give
options for people to choose from or you will not get a consensus and will
have difficulty making sense of the data. We made a bar graph for the
question: What kind of pet do you have? We then talked about how looking
at the bar graph easily helps us “see” the data and make sense of it.
- Talked about “fact power” and that this means that we use information we
know about different math facts to help us figuring out a variety of addition
problems. We can use things that we know about: +0, +1, +10, doubles facts
and turn around facts.
- Focused on Abraham Lincoln and learned about his early life and how that
even at a young age, he was a strong person who wanted to help others.
- Focused on three more r-controlled vowels: er, ur, ir. We learned that these
three r-controlled vowels sound the same when they are within a word, so it
might be more difficult to spell words with these sounds, but we can easily
read them.
- Learned a trick for spelling three of our sight words: could, would, & should.
We use the phrase “O, U, Lucky, Duck” to remember the “ould” of each word,
since we can figure out the beginning sound. Ask your first grader about
this.
NEXT WEEK, WE WILL…
- Continue to work on “fact power” and look at making ten when we are adding
numbers together.
- Complete a math assessment and a Fundations assessment for our current
units.
-
Revise and edit our informative writing pieces. We will use checklists to see
if we have included the elements needed for this type of writing.
Read about a person who has made a difference and become an expert on this
person, so we can teach our classmates about them.
REMINDERS…
- Please be sure your child continues to bring their “snow gear” to school each
day. We are going out for recess everyday, and there are many children who
are not prepared for the weather.
- Please be sure their “snow gear” is labeled.
WISH LIST…
- Clorox wipes— We would appreciate any donations as we are trying to keep
our room clean and free of germs. J Thanks!
