A Message from the Chief of Police
Now that 2017 is upon us, many people start the year making New Year’s
resolutions. One resolution I would like to suggest is to promise yourself is to
drive without distractions. This includes texting while driving.
In 2016, there were 1,100 traffic crashes in Oviedo, an increase of approximately
5% over the number of crashes in 2015. The vast majority of these crashes were
rear-end collisions. The reasons are speed and distractive driving, with texting
and use of cell phones leading the cause of distractive driving.
On Wednesday, January 11th, I took part in a town hall meeting dedicated to the
issue of distracted driving. The town hall meeting was hosted by Matt Austin,
news anchor on Channel 6, WKMG TV. This hour long town hall meeting focused on area residents who lost loved ones in traffic crashes due to a distracted
driver. The meeting can be viewed at http://www.clickorlando.com/drivingchange.
Despite how good of a driver you think you are and how good you think you can
multi-task, your life and the lives of others depend on you focusing on driving,
not your texts, your e-mails, a book, applying make-up or shaving while you are
driving.
Let’s resolve not to be the cause of a traffic crash. To quote an old adage, “The
life you save may be your own.”

State Road 426 / County Road 419 Phase I Widening Project
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has begun construction of the
State Road 426/County Road 419 Phase I widening project. The project construction will be primarily on State Road 434, between Smith and Franklin Streets
where new additional lanes are being added. Also, there will be some construction on Franklin Street that may close the south side sidewalk temporarily. The
Franklin Street pond will also be expanded to almost double its current size. The
pond expansion will require the majority of existing trees to be removed.
New landscaping will be installed as a separate project along the construction
corridor following completion of the widening. Construction of the widening is
anticipated to last approximately one calendar year. Motorists should expect lane
closures and some delays as construction progresses.
For additional information on this project, please visit the FDOT’s website at
