Top 5 Lights you should Never Buy for your House Articles on ‘what not to buy’ are sometimes more helpful because showing a bunch of pretty lighting doesn’t necessarily work because the style might not be right for your space. So here are my top 5 picks on lighting that should never leave the store! And if you find you have inherited some or bought them yourself, don’t get too upset. Lighting is hard to get right, you have to consider the size and scale of the space and you’ll also need to coordinate each light with the next as well as consider the style of your house with each purchase. Lighting is always a good subject in the winter when we need it the most! So here’s my list of the ones to stay away from: 1. If you need a ceiling fan, try to avoid one that includes a light at all costs. Atmosphere is NEVER created with a spotlight in the middle of the room. Buy lamps for that instead. source for all: Royal Lighting 2. These ‘glass down’ chandeliers are rarely attractive and yet they seem to come standard with many a home. At least go for the ones that come ‘glass up’. 3. Except if you are looking for an entry chandelier. Stay away from these ones, they are just bad. Look for a lantern instead. 4. These ‘nipple’ lights are just the worst. And what amazes me is that the one I would recommend for any basic bedroom, closet or laundry room is the most inexpensive one in the store. Just the bowl with 3 clips is all you need. Simple and a bargain at $20. 5. This wall sconce. Again just a little too basic to be attractive. At least look for one with a linen shade for something beyond builders lighting.
