As we approach Thanksgiving this year, I’ve been thinking about some unlikely
things for which I am grateful. One such subject is being thankful for shadows.
A couple of days ago, I was in a parking lot late at night. A very bright security
light was set low to the ground and was angled towards the treetops. I didn’t really notice the light until I stepped into its path. What I saw next took me aback, because the
shadow I cast seemed 20 feet tall and 6 feet wide. It was huge! I’m sure that I’ve never
thrown that large a shadow in my life.
In reflecting about that experience, I wondered how big I really am when tough
times, the shadows of life if you will, cast their pall over me. To be honest, there have
been too many occasions when my shadow has been pretty small. When I haven’t handled difficulties well. When I’ve indulged in self-pity or gotten angry at others or even
the Lord. When I haven’t allowed Christ’s light to shine in me.
One of my favorite movies is Apollo 13, which recounts the epic journey of a crippled spacecraft that gripped our nation back in 1970. As Mission Control is grappling
with how to get our three astronauts safely home, one high-ranking official laments that
this could be NASA’s greatest disaster. I love the response of Flight Director Gene
Kranz. “Sir, with all due respect, I believe this will be our finest hour.”
How can our darkest times produce our finest moments? How can the shadows
make us spiritual giants? The answer is not found in our own strength and wisdom, for
we are weak.
As memorable as my 20 foot shadow was, there are two other shadows that I frequently see that are far more impressive to me and reveal the solution. They are cast by
the “t” shaped clothesline post in our back yard. One shadow is formed as the sun rises,
while the other appears as the sun sets. These shadows stir something deep within me
every time I see them, because they are the shadow of the cross.
The darkest moment the world has ever known when Christ died for our sins, became the hope of the world. That’s why we can sing the words of the hymn, “Beneath
the Cross of Jesus”, which affirm, “I take, O cross, thy shadow, for my abiding place.”
And that’s why when the tough times produce shadows in our lives; we can echo the
Apostle Paul’s words in Philippians 4:13, “I can do everything through Christ who gives
me strength.” That truth should make every Christian grateful, not just at Thanksgiving,
but throughout the year.

We have noticed recently there are several residents
with old photos of themselves hanging outside their
doors and they look so nice we would like to encourage
others to do the same. These could be military photos,
wedding photos, or any special photo you would like to
share. It’s so nice to see what our residents looked like in
their earlier lives.
