Urban Music Festival
Damon Luckett II
Hays High School
This weekend, I went
to the Urban Music Festival.
Urban Music Festival is an
event in Austin, Texas that
happens during the Clyde
Littlefield Texas Relays. The
music festival features
stages that focus specifically
on R&B, Jazz, Indie Soul,
Neo Soul, and showcases
local and unsigned artists.
The concert is family
friendly and is a lot of fun.
Unfortunately, it's only active for two days.
On Friday, the performers were LeToya
Luckett, TONY! TONI!
TONE!, MC Lyte, and TROY
NoKA. On Saturday, the
performers were Keith
Sweat, The Whispers,
Althea Rene, Kyle Turner,
and Michael Ward. Even
though I only made it to
the Friday concert, it was
worth it. My family and I
were out all evening. We
had a great time.

Loyalty In Literature
Loyalty in literature
has been a characteristic
used by authors for centuries. Two stories that use
loyalty as a characteristic
of its characters are
“Antigone” by Sophocles
and “Julius Caesar” by William Shakespeare.
In
the
plays,
“Antigone” and “Julius
Caesar,” loyalty is an attribute that certain people
possess
or
lack.
“Antigone’s” Creon and
“Julius Caesar’s” Brutus
both perceive loyalty as
thinking of other people
and not turning their back
on them. However, their
views differ in the fact that
Creon thought being demanding and ruthless was
for the good of his people.
On the other hand, Brutus
did the things he did out
of loyalty to Rome’s legacy
and power.
In “Julius Caesar,”
Brutus says, “I would not,
Cassius, yet I love him
well.” In this line, Brutus
shows loyalty to Caesar by
telling Cassius that he respects and loves Caesar.
However, later in the play,
Brutus would be one of
the conspirators to murder Caesar. This act was
not done out of jealousy or
hatred towards Caesar.
Brutus felt that Caesar
wasn’t serving Rome the
correct way and the only
way to take that power
away from him was to kill
him. Brutus showed loyalty to Rome, however,
this required him to turn
his back on Caesar for the
good of the people.
In “Antigone,” Creon
says, “I am aware, of
course, that no Ruler can
expect complete loyalty
from his subjects until he
has been tested in office.”
In this statement, Creon is
speaking about how he
will soon gain everyone’s
loyalty when he proves he
is a good ruler. However,
his subjects soon turn on
him and lose respect for
him when he sentences
Antigone to death. Creon,
as a result, turns cruel and
feels that his city has betrayed him. He even turns
on his own son who was
trying to warn his father
about the people of the
city. This sudden change in
behavior shows that Creon
lacked loyalty to his family
and to his people.
Loyalty is perceived
in many different ways in
literature. However, it
stays consistent in the way
that loyalty can be damaged through betrayal and
a lust for power or control.
definitely put light on the
family name. She had a
great performance and I
hope she can perform in
Austin again.
MC Lyte is one of the
greatest MC's of all time.
She performed her verse
from the hit song, " SelfDestruction" and a had
help from a woman from
the some audience. After
that song, She performed,
"Ruff Neck". She also
freestyled to show the audience she hasn't lost her
touch. Great all out performance.
Last but not least,
Tony! Toni! Tone! performed. They had everyone on their feet. They
performed their hit, "It
Never Rains". That was my
favorite song of the whole
performance. They did a
good job as well.
I didn't see TROY
NoKA due to my arrival.
Everyone's performance
that I did see was great.
The audience was energetic. Everyone was happy.
The food was good too.
If you have a camera,
make sure to bring that to
the concert. I brought my
camera and took some
good pictures. You could
take pictures of the show.
You could take pictures of
downtown from the field.
You could also take pictures of the people.
Urban Music Festival
was great. I advise anyone
who's interested in R&B,
Jazz, Indie Soul, Neo Soul,
Gospel, and or Hip Hop to
go see the show. This is an
annual event. This is also
a two day event. It will be
back next year so visit the
Urban Music Festival for
great music and a Great
Time!
