The BoomVane – revolutionizing fast
water Oil Spill Response
BoomVane deployment in river Waal, the Netherlands.
The BoomVane is a device for both shore
based fast water booming, and vessel based
sweep operations. In rivers, this powerful yet
light and handy tool makes spill control and
recovery possible without the need for boats,
anchors or fixed installations of any kind. The
BoomVane can be operated in rivers with
heavy traffic as the control rudder allows for
fast and easy system retrieval.
The BoomVane works equally well deployed
off an advancing vessel, allowing a single vessel to deploy a wide boom sweep.
US Coast Guard R&D tests, Columbia River 1999.
Oil spill response operations are notably difficult in rivers with strong current and river traffic. Considering typical response time margins
allowed for river spills in relation to the mobilisation time and resources required for conventional land- or vessel-based boom systems, a
timely response is not a logistic possibility - with
the BoomVane it is.
The BoomVane is constructed as a cascade of
vertical wings mounted in a rectangular frame.
Powered by the current flow the BoomVane held by a single mooring line only - swings out
towards the opposite shore with the oil boom in
tow. The BoomVane rides very stably in water
speeds ranging from <1-5 knots, insensitive to
wave action and fluctuations of the current. When
deployed off a vessel, it is the vessel’s progress
through the water that powers the BoomVane.
Riding easy in choppy waters.

System configuration
ORC offers complete spill response systems for fast water applications based on the BoomVane.
However, the BoomVane works very well with many types and makes of skimmers and oil booms,
although shallow draught booms are recommended for both river and vessel applications, to reduce drag.
Vessel application
The ‘power’ and stability of the BoomVane in
choppy/high seas enables a range of boom sweep
applications with unparalleled performance in
offshore and coastal waters as well as in estuaries
– sweep widths of 100-150 meters are attainable
depending on boom draught. The operator avoids
the practical problems inherent in two-vessel
sweeps (e.g. speed and distance coordination), fur-
ther to the obvious saving of only requiring one
vessel for a wide sweep operation. Also, the elasticity of the system also saves boom wear and tear.
As all that is required of the towing vessel is a
sturdy cleat and ‘torque’, the BoomVane is the
ultimate boom deployment tool for Vessel of
Opportunity Skimming Systems (VOSS).
