Our Vision: To develop in our children a zest to become life-long
learners and caring, valuable members of society.
Mission:
To make a positive difference in children’s lives.

Emotional Intelligence
All classes continue to include the formal teaching
of Emotional Intelligence in their weekly program.
Through exposure to an Emotional Intelligence program at school, children at Guthrie Street have the
opportunity to develop five key skills:
 Self-awareness
 Self-control
 Self-motivation
 Empathy
 The ability to get along with others
The common language that accompanies our approach has certainly become part of our school culture and I am sure that phrases such as those listed
below are filtering into the homes of our students:
 Treat others the way you would like to be treated.
 You need to participate to progress.
 We do the right thing because the right thing is
the best thing to do.
 I need to be the boss of my own behaviour.
Emotions have the greatest influence on our behaviour. Knowing about human emotions and understanding why and how they occur allows us to take
charge of, manage and if necessary change our
own behaviour.
School Uniform
I would like to thank Guthrie Street families for the
effort they make to ensure children are in correct
uniform on a daily basis. Our uniform gives our
school a sense of identity both in and out of our
school grounds. Recently we have noticed a few
children wearing clothing that do not meet the
guidelines set out in our uniform policy. In particular
I would ask that families pay close attention to our
uniform requirements for jumpers, trackpants and
jewellery (see the attached policy with today’s
newsletter). Please note we do understand that circumstances arise where children may need to be
out of uniform. On these days we appreciate a note
of explanation from parents/guardians.
While on the topic of uniforms I remind parents to
ensure that their child’s school jumper is clearly labelled with their name. You would be amazed at
how many jumpers end up in the lost property cupboard because they are not labelled!
Web Page: www.guthriestps.vic.edu.au
Notification of who is picking up your child.
Parents can I please ask that if someone other than
yourself is going to pick your child up during the
school day that you make contact with the office or
classroom teacher and notify them of these arrangements. As part of our “duty of care” we cannot
release children into another person’s care unless
this has taken place.
Mother’s Day
A reminder that we have the following events this
week:
 Mother’s Day Stall – Thursday May 11th
 Mother’s Day Breakfast – Friday May 12th
More information regarding both these events can
be found in other sections of the newsletter. I encourage all children to take advantage of these opportunities to spoil their mums. We all know they
deserve it!
Fun Run Sponsorship
A reminder that we will place our order for gift cards
at Rebel and K-Mart this week. Anyone who has
collected sponsorship for our School Fun Run and
is yet to return it to school can you please return it
by tomorrow.
Our Fun Run will take place at Kialla Lakes next
week on Thursday 18th May.
State Trials
Recently I mentioned that a small number of our
students were selected to trial at a regional level for
state sporting teams. Following these trials Eliza
Bicknell (Netball), Mitchell Grumley, Reece Reedy
(Soccer) and Boston Dowling (football) were selected to attend further trials in Melbourne. We congratulate these students on this achievement and wish
them all the best at the next stage of state selection.

Grade Three
3CH & 3CJ will be presenting next week’s EQ
proverb at Assembly. Students and teachers
would love for parents to show their support by
attending.
Last week we had a visit from author Leeanne
Vernon who writes the Netball Dreamz series.
Students participated in some creative writing
where they wrote about their own imaginative
special land.
Also last week, an artist and representative
from Gallery Kaiela lead the children in a clay
turtle making workshop. Students learnt that
the turtle is the totem of the Yorta Yorta tribe
and learnt some facts about turtles.
Due to Naplan this week, there is no homework for Grade 3 students.
Grade Four
We have noticed lots of tired children in class,
making it hard for them and others to concentrate in class. This has led to some conversations about bedtime :)
Integrated studies
From week 5 onwards students will be engaging in their own tasks for Integrated Studies.
Could we please collect … boxes all shapes
and sizes, material scraps, ribbons and craft
things so children can create and design.
Ipads
Students who have IPADS... could we please
make a habit of bringing them in every day to
use in class, especially, as we have lots of individual research tasks to complete.
Reminder:
Please bring in Blue reader folders everyday
with diary’s, homework , readers and Library
books inside.
