Getting Ready

Copy the title card, game directions, Start and Finish cards, sea animal and
shell cards, game markers, and answer key. Make six additional sets of the
shell cards. Color and cut out all of the game components. (You should have
21 shell cards.) Place the title card in the top pocket of the pocket chart. Then
put the Start card on the left in the pocket below the title. Place the Finish
card in the bottom pocket on the right. Shuffle the shell cards and use them to
create a curvy path between Start and Finish. Put the sea animal cards in the
paper bag. Use clothespins to clip the directions faceup to one side of the chart
and the answer key facedown to the other side.
Introducing the Game

Show each sea animal card to children and name it. Ask children to tell how
many syllables are in the word. Encourage them to say the word slowly and
clap out the syllables, counting as they go. Write the syllable count on the
board. Finally, invite two children at a time to play the game.

Extending the Game

• For additional reinforcement, have children complete the practice page.
• Put the sea animal cards in a learning center, and have children sort them by
syllable count.
• Provide letter cards with the animal cards. Have children match the letter to
the beginning sound of each animal. You might also have them listen for and
match sounds at the end of the animal names.
