In Memoriam:
Marion Barry’s civil rights legacy lives on
His former constituents in Washington, D.C. called
him “Mayor for Life”. His fellow students at LeMoyneOwen College nicknamed him “Shep” in reference to
the Soviet propagandist Dmitri Shepilov because of
his passion for civil rights. Marion
Barry ’58 passed away Nov. 26, 2014
at the age of 78. He was an outspoken
student who did not shy away
from leadership or the turbulence
surrounding the civil rights
movement. Instead, he embraced
them as president of the LOC chapter
of the NAACP. Barry graduated from
LOC with his bachelor’s degree and
went on to Fisk University where
he earned a master’s in Chemistry. However, his
experiences at LOC laid the foundation for a life
in politics. Barry ascended in the political arena
in Washington to the office of Mayor where he
served four terms. Later he served
on the district’s council where
he championed the rights of the
economically disadvantaged. Barry once said “my greatest work
comes in the community.” He
certainly made an indelible mark on
Washington, D.C. politics and his
contributions in the continued struggle
for civil rights are immeasurable. He
will be sorely missed by all.

Bobbie Jean Mathis ’54
helps continue the legacy
Alumna donates half her estate to beloved alma mater

Just as in life, Bobbie Jean Mathis continues to impact the lives of students in
South Memphis. She taught first-graders at Alonzo Locke Elementary School for 40
years and now her generosity will help students continue their education beyond
elementary school and even beyond her death. Mathis remembered her beloved
alma mater in her last will and testament, bequeathing $50,000 to LeMoyneOwen College in the wake of her passing Nov. 14, 2014.
Mathis earned a bachelor’s degree in education at LOC and a master’s from
Tennessee State University. She received numerous awards during her career
and was an ardent volunteer for local organizations. Metropolitan Baptist
Church recognized her as a faithful member with the Distinguished
Women of Metropolitan Dedicated Service Award. Mathis also was
an active member of the Memphis and Shelby County Retired
Teachers’ Association, the Curve Optimist Club, the Hamilton
Neighborhood Initiative and the NAACP. Although she shared
her financial resources with various charities, those close to
Mathis say there was no other nonprofit more dear to her
than LeMoyne-Owen College.
LOC Planned Giving Director Frankie Jeffries says
alumni like Mathis are the lifeblood of the College and
not to underestimate the power of planned giving.
“Planned gifts help secure the future of the College and
help donors make a lasting impact for generations to
come,” Jeffries says. “It is a wonderful and painless way
to demonstrate your passion and belief that education
is the key to progress.”
Mathis’ memory is cherished by loved-ones,
colleagues, friends, and the LeMoyne-Owen
College family. n
