From the Principal’s Desk YEAR 6 CAMP This week we wave our Year 6 students and staff off on their camp to Perth. They have an action packed week ahead and I’m sure many stories to share on their return. We wish them all the best and thank the staff for giving up their week to provide these opportunities for our students. Staff Change Last Friday we farewelled Ms Brown as she prepares to have her first baby. We welcome Mrs Brigitta Pollard who will be replacing her as the Dance/Drama teacher. Mutual Exchange You may have heard your child come home and mention “mutual exchange”. Mutual exchange is the process of swapping one item for another of the same value agreed to by the two parties. An example of this is when a student doesn’t have a hat at recess or lunch time. They will come down to the office and swap their pencil case or school bag for a hat. At the conclusion of recess/lunch they bring the hat back, in return receiving their pencil case or whatever it may be back. Some teachers are using this in class with students that don’t have a ruler for example. This process is very successful in that there is a mutual agreement with both parties receiving what they wish for. I have commenced using this process with parents who have outstanding financial accounts and have demonstrated genuine financial hardship. As a part of their mutual exchange they have performed tasks in the school such as canteen duty or lost property sorting. If you would like to know more or discuss this with me please call the front office to arrange for a meeting. Attendance at school Last week some of you may have received a letter stating your child’s attendance had fallen below 90%. This figure is set by the Department of Education and below 90% is deemed as unacceptable. The intention of the letters was to inform you of where your child was at. Harmony Day Tuesday 21st March This year we will be celebrating Harmony Day as a whole school. Students are encouraged to wear orange (Harmony Day colour) or traditional dress. I believe it’s so important in this day and age that the students gain an understanding of living harmoniously, are racially tolerant and have an appreciation of differences throughout our community. The students will all assemble in the undercovered area at 12.30pm where they will participate in a dance taught to them by Mrs Pollard. Nits Like most schools across Australia, our school has nits. Some years your child may experience no nits and other years they become a real problem. The bad news is, there is no quick or real solution. That is not to say we will not do anything about them. Nit Week held every term in Week 5 is a reminder for parents to check their child’s hair. Having children of my own I know it is frustrating when you treat your child’s hair for a week only for them to have them set up home in their hair the next day! Our procedures in line with Education Department Act are; * If a child has live nits in their hair when they are inspected then they are sent home. They cannot return until hair has been treated and live nits removed. * A letter is then sent home to the whole class stating nits were found in the class please check your child’s hair. * On rare occasions, a child that consistently has nits and is obviously not being treated at home will be treated by an administrator at school as we do not want to have them missing out on more schooling. Below I have included a fact sheet provided by the health department which includes all relevant information about head lice. Please come and see me if you have any comments or suggestions. http://www.healthywa.wa.gov.au/Articles/F_I/Head-lice Uniforms There has definitely been a change in the weather over the last week or so. The mornings do seem a bit fresher. I am aware that the uniform shop has over 100 of the new style jackets on backorder. The uniform company has assured me that these items and many more are on their way and should be available very soon. In the interim if your child is waiting for a jacket, they have permission to wear a jumper/jacket from home or come down to the front office and try on a discontinued jumper until the new stock arrives. I have been delighted by the uptake of the new uniforms and I must say the students look very smart in them. School connectedness The following is an excerpt from a document produced by Kids Matter in relation to connecting at school....Being connected at school is not about having mobile phones and computers. It’s about knowing you can get support, that you will be listened to, and that you can work together with school staff to help your child learn and develop. Working together to care for children is the best way for schools and parents and carers to support children’s mental health and wellbeing. When schools and parents and carers work together, children find it easier to understand what is expected from them and are better able to manage. They have fewer behaviour problems and do better at school. When parents and carers are connected to school it helps them get support when they need it. Support may come from talking with teachers or other school staff, or from making connections with other parents and carers. Schools help families to connect through having lots of different activities that parents and carers can get involved in. At Vasse Primary School we encourage parental involvement and participation at all times. Regards, Sinan Kerimofski Principal ‘Preparing for the future’ page 2. Merit Certificate Recipients Chaplain’s Chat Monday 13th Mar The Importance Of Cuddling Your Children Most parents love snuggling with their babies but they feel like at a certain age kids may be too old for “cuddle time”. This is not the case! Hugging is SO beneficial for not just kids, but humans in general. Several research studies seem to confirm that cuddling your children is not only pleasurable for both of you, but can result in happier, healthier, more curious kids with bigger brains! What are the top benefits of cuddling? • Bigger brain size & smarter kids • It’s fun for you & your child • It makes kids comfortable with receiving and showing affection toward others • It increases good chemicals in the brain which in turn lower stress, promote healing, lower blood pressure and make us feel happy • It’s a way to communicate love and affection without words • It can be good exercise, rocking, carrying and holding your kids • It promotes bonding, saying to your child “I’ll always be here for you” • Kids and parents alike NEED it Year 1 Rm 21 Rm 22 Rm 25 Benji W Mason D Oliver C Jessica Mc Year 2 Rm 5 Rm 26 Rm 27 Charli B Taj B Miriam W Imogen B Year 3 Rm 13 Kelis W Year 4 Rm 8 Rm 9 Rm 11 Rm 23 Rm 24 Bradley M Jayden E Kiera M Toby M Sally B Alfie F Cooper A An excerpt from http://day2dayparenting.com/the-importance-of-cuddling-your-children/ Peace and joy, Rae [email protected] VPS Choir performance Year 5 Rm 1 Rm 2 Jake C Bryanna K Year 6 Rm 3 Rm 4 Xavier W Evan K Battery Recycling at Vasse We are now collecting old batteries so they can be disposed of responsibly. The choir sang beautifully and looked fabulous in their bright choir uniforms. (And the Head of Music at UWA told me our choir sounded fantastic!) Thank you so much to all the parents who brought their children to participate in that event. A special thank you to those who brought a supper contribution, and a special mention to Lola who helped the organisers pack the furniture away!
