Dear Parents,
Year 1 Dance Incursion
Our Year 1 students were entertained and thoroughly engaged in their Cultural Dance
Explosion incursion which was held on Monday. The students were introduced to a number of
types of dance such as the salsa and the Australian Hip Hop. This incursion was linked to their
current inquiry unit looking at Art forms.
Year 4 Camp at Camp Manyung
The Year 4 students had a wonderful time on camp. Camp Manyung is on the Mornington Peninsula at Mt
Eliza situated on a magnificent coastal property with breathtaking views across Port Phillip Bay and
surrounding areas. This was an exciting opportunity for the students to explore new skills and learn in a safe
and secure beach environment.
Some of the activities that made up the program were flying fox, surfing, rock pool rambles and the giant
swing. The children will certainly sleep well over the weekend. Thank you to the teachers Mr Baker, Mr
Graham, Mr King, Miss Leahy, Miss Steen and ES staff Maria Janecic and Deb Hatfield who attended.
Grandparents’ Morning & Special Assembly
We would love all our grandparents to join us on this special day. We will be
starting the morning with a special assembly at 9.00am in the gym followed by
special activities in the children’s classrooms until 10.00am. We hope to see you all!!
School Council Meeting
To our School Council members – this is just a reminder that our next meeting is Monday 24th October at
7.00pm in the staffroom.
2017 Foundation Transition – Session 1
On Friday 28th October we will be holding the first of four Transition sessions for our 2017 Foundation students.
Due to the current renovations in our Foundation classrooms the transition sessions will be held in our Year 2
block of four classrooms (Rooms 7 – 10).
Reminder – Late Arrivals & Early Leavers
Some parents may have already seen that we no longer have a book to sign in for late arrivals or early
leavers. Office staff now just log this information directly into our Compass computer program. This method
has already shown to be a very time-effective process. So, if your child is late or leaves early on any
particular occasion, just ask the office staff to either sign in or out and give the reason for leaving early or
arriving late e.g. medical appointment. Thanking you in advance.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone and enjoy the sunshine whilst it lasts.

SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL PROGRAM IN COLLABORATION WITH KINGSTON COUNCIL.
Following the surveys that were sent out last term about how our students travel to school, we have a number
of important sessions to build on our ‘Safe Routes to School Program’.
There are four sessions on Monday, two of these we would highly recommend parents to attend.
Monday 24th October
1.45pm
Student Representative Council and School Leaders to give some feedback to the
team.
2.30pm – 3.30pm
An open parent community conversation to collect feedback about some of the issues
around walking and cycling. ALL PARENTS WELCOME.
3.30pm
Staff meeting to inform the teachers about the program and present the data from the
survey.
6.30pm – 8.00pm
The Community Information Session
includes a ‘formal’ presentation on the
‘Safe Routes to School Program’ and a
Q&A. ALL PARENTS WELCOME.
The information from these sessions will be collated along with
the data we received from the surveys and an action plan will
be formulated. More information on how parents can assist in
this process will be available soon.

MATHS FUN TERM 4 EDITION
At 9 o’clock the firework display started. There were 3 different types of
fireworks. The blue rockets flashed 3 times, the red rockets flashed 4 times
and the gold rockets flashed 6 times. In the first minute I counted 24 flashes.
What combination of rockets could have been used?
The 10c coin roll game required a 10c coin to be rolled and to land within a
square without touching the sides of the square. I was told the probability of winning was a 1 in 4 chance. I
spent $2 on the game. How many wins should I have based on the probability?
In my purse I had been given $3.50 to spend at the carnival. This money was made up of 10 coins. What
could the coins have been? – for example 3 x 10c coins, 2 x 20c coins…..
Is there more than one possibility?
This year’s carnival is on Friday 25th November. Use this information to work out what day of the week
Christmas Day is on (25th December).
I buy a wrist band to go on as many rides as I can during the carnival. I start going on the rides at 6.00pm and
finish as 8.42pm. On average I go on 10 rides an hour. How many rides do I go on altogether?
Design a fairground ride. Write as many Maths facts as you can about your design.
You could use: speed, distance, shape, symmetry, cost…

MATHS ’24’ COMPETITION
Over the past few weeks the students in Years 3 - 6 have been practicing their number facts by playing ‘The
24 Game’. The game involves finding ways in which you can add,
subtract, multiply or divide four numbers to make the number 24. It is
a game which relies on students quick thinking in the 4 operations
and using the factors of 24. Each competition was highly contested
and I would like to congratulate the finalists from each year level.
The eventual champions from each year level were:
The Year 3 winner was Oliver R in 3MT
The Year 4 winner was Brandon S-G in 4RL
The Year 5 winner was George L in 5TT
The Year 6 winner was Xavier C in 6SK
The Year 1 and 2 students played a simpler version of the
game in which the students need to select which
combinations of numbers they can use to add or subtract
to produce a total. The students responded well in the final
of the competition and the end result was very close.
The champions were:
The Year 1 winner was Nash J in 1LF
The Year 2 winner was Tyson G in 2LA

know, works at a trucking company or has a tort liner or flatbed tray we would like the use of it
on the day. This can be dropped off on the Friday and picked up
on the Saturday / Monday.

building. The wearable clothes and shoes are collected and then
transported by truck to Melbourne’s port where they are loaded on
to containers to be sold and shipped to Africa (e.g. Ghana) and
some of the world’s poorest developing nations; people who would
otherwise not be able to afford good quality clothing.
Thank you to those families who keep donating to such a worthwhile cause, and at the same

PYP Snapshot of the Week
Foundation Excursion to ACMI – 10th and 12th October
As an extension to our investigation into the Central Idea ‘Stories offer ways to reflect on and extend
our creativity’, the Foundation students went on an excursion to ACMI (Australian Centre of the
Moving Image) to participate in the Fairytales and Fantasy Workshop. What an enchanting day
they had! The workshop gave the students the opportunity to experience the creation of a story
through film and to develop their understanding of characters, structure and the narratives genre,
which perfectly aligned with our Lines of Inquiry. They were involved in dressing up as characters,
acting in front of a green screen, making the music and the film production process. The workshop
enabled the students to extend their creativity and enhanced their understanding of the
Transdisciplinary Theme ‘How we express ourselves’.
