Warrior Wave - Mariemont City Schools

Warrior Wave
1. CHL Championships!!!
We are hosting this year’s CHL Championships on THIS Saturday, February
4th. The natatorium will be rockin with all of the excitement in the air and
Mariemont will try to use that energy to represent our school in this first
step of the Championship season. Our Girls’ Team will be trying to do
something no other team has been able to do…win 4 consecutive CHL
Championships for not only a CHL girls’ swim team, but for ANY Mariemont
sports team!!! You may want to claim your spot early in the bleachers
because it’s going to be crowded. Be sure to wear your team parent shirt (it
will be a sea of bright yellow!) or any other Mariemont attire you can find.
Mariemont is responsible for 2 timers for lane 3, the computer table
workers, 2 awards workers, as well as hosting the hospitality room. So break
out those delicious family recipes (breakfast, brunch or lunch) and let’s make
our hospitality the best there has been. You can sign up for these jobs on
our volunteer site. Let’s put on a great show and cheer our Water Warriors
on to impressive swims!!!
2. Tuesday, January 31st
We have moved our poster making party to Tuesday (instead of Monday) for
a few reasons. Hopefully every team member makes the effort to either
stay after practice or stop by after their club practice from 6:00 till 8:00
to make a poster for a teammate. We will cover the walls of the natatorium
with these creative posters and it will make our natatorium look very
impressive!
3. Saturday, February 4th
CHL Championships
On Deck at Mariemont: 9:00 A.M.
Meet begins: 11:00
Swimmers are reminded to be wearing team attire and represent our school,
our team and themselves to the best of their abilities. We are WARRIOR
NATION!
4. Shave, Taper and Paper
In the sport of swimming you might hear the words “shave” and “taper”. We
work hard all season, making ourselves tired during practice while still
trying to perform at a high level. Then once taper hits, we back off of some
dryland, not do as much yardage, do a lot of racing and fast swimming with
more rest, fine tune our strokes, turns and starts. Swimmers tend to be
the happiest when “Taper Time” hits! During taper, swimmers should be:
getting lots of rest, eating healthy foods, and limiting physical exertion to
their swimming training only. Because of individual needs and goals some
teammates are tapering at different times over the next few weeks. Some
girls are tapering for CHLs because it will be their final meet of the season.
Some swimmers will be tapering for Sectionals because they will be looking
to swim their fastest at Mason and perhaps qualify for Districts the
following weekend. Some swimmers are tapering for Districts because they
will be trying to punch their ticket to the State Championships. And finally,
some swimmers will be tapering for State because they are looking to keep
Mariemont at the TOP of Ohio swimming!!!
Swimmers shave their entire body when they are trying to go their fastest.
It’s not just the hair (as many people outside of the sport believe) but the
layer of skin that we are shaving off. When a swimmers shaves
(everywhere his/her suit does not cover) he/she is removing the top layer
of skin. This creates a sensation like no other when a swimmer enters the
water for their events. You feel as if you are not even touching the water
and can “slip” right through it with the fastest speed you’ve ever created!
Sometimes teammates have shaving parties to help each other shave their
legs, arms, backs and chests. The captains may organize these if they would
like. If it’s at your house, good luck keeping your drains from clogging
(especially the boys’ legs). Take it slow, use good shaving cream and razors,
and do not apply lotion afterwards. Be prepared to not feel your clothes or
sheets for a few days afterwards!
We use to use the word “paper” a long time ago in swimming because the suit
you wore at the end of the season was “paper thin” and as skimpy as
possible! Now we call the suits “speed suits”. Swimmers wear speed suits
to compress their bodies into a streamline position and tend to be a smaller
size then normally worn. They are made with water resistant material that
allows swimmers to have less drag than their regular suits. I have a
collection of speed suits that I have personally purchased over the years.
You can tell by the prices below that they are not cheap. I will allow
swimmers to wear them at our Championship meets. Swimmers show their
appreciation for this generous act by taking great care of the suit, rinsing
it in cold water and returning it in the bag it was given to them with it not
being bunched up in a ball. If a swimmer would like to purchase a new speed
suit, please see the information below.

opportunity to provide workers for the DII Girls’ meet. K-T Overbey will
be placing the needed worker spots on our volunteer site. Boy swimmers are
STRONGLY encouraged to stay after their meet and be the timers…this
way you are on deck and can be on hand to witness the great Mariemont
swims! There are other spots to be filled as well. Our program gets $$$
for providing the workers that we use to provide items for our team. Please
help if you plan on being in attendance! Unfortunately, Miss Jordan will be
out of town this weekend with her commitment to her music program (I
think she’s going to be in the Bahamas). If there is a mom (or moms) who is
willing to ride the bus with the girls it would be much appreciated. Please
let Kevin know if you enjoy riding yellow school busses and would like to help
out.
7. Speed Suits!
If you are interested in purchasing a speed suit for the Championship
season you might want to consider purchasing one from Swimville USA.
That is the swim shop that provided our team suits this season. Because of
that, they are offering Mariemont High School swimmers special discount
pricing! These are wonderful discounts!!! Please remember that when
representing Mariemont we only wear either black or blue speed suits. I
know there are other fancy, more colorful choices out there, but it is
important to me that we look like a team as best we can. Here is a chart of
various suits and pricing. In my opinion, the best suits have been the LZR
Elites. The LZR X are good but sometimes are difficult to fit and tend to
be the most expensive. Those wearing LZR Pros don’t seem to have the
significant time drops as the LZR Elites. If you have any questions please
take a moment and contact Coach Kevin.

8. Sports Stag
The following message is from our Athletic Director Tom Nerl:
The Mariemont Athletic Department is sponsoring the 12th Annual Warriors Sports Stag
on February 2nd, 2017 at the 20th Century Theater in Oakley. This year’s featured guest
is former Cincinnati Red and MLB Network analyst Sean Casey, The Mayor! Along with
Sean’s stories of his playing days and behind the scene look at the MLB Network, the
evening will feature a social hour, buffet dinner, and for VIP ticket holders, a meet and
greet with Sean Casey. Sponsor tables are available for $2500, VIP tables for $1500,
and individual tickets for $150 VIP, and $100.
Proceeds from the event directly benefit the Warrior Athletic Department. In the past,
theses proceeds have enabled us to remodel locker rooms and playing fields for
Mariemont teams, and more recently, these proceeds assist in providing uniforms for our
teams. It’s a great chance for alumni, dads of our athletes and friends to come together
for a great cause and friendship.
