Reader’s story: A quiet afternoon fishing Rode past the bear It was summer holidays. I was at my aunt’s farm in British Columbia. I was 13 or 14 years old. I thought, “How do I get around the bear? I’ll just have to pedal past him as fast as I can.” So I went around the bear. Went fishing It was just after lunch. I went fishing down the road. I rode my bike that day. I caught 10 fish. Art: Nola Johnston Saw a bear in the road After fishing, I rode back to the farm. I had a bag full of fish. When I got to the driveway, there was a bear. It was sitting in the middle of the road. I stopped and looked behind me. The bear was still sitting on the road. He was looking at me. I went home. Neil Williams, Calgary <www.englishexpress.ca> • A quiet afternoon fishing • May—June 2010
