Dear Parents and Caregivers,
27 May 2016
Nau mai haere mai. Talofa lava. Malo le lei. Kamusta.
This week we celebrate our Feast Day, on the Feast of Corpus Christi. When the two Colleges were
amalgamated 29 years ago this feast day was chosen as the new day on which we would celebrate
our two founding orders and all that is special about Catholic education on this site.
This Feast of Corpus Christi marks the tradition and belief in the body and blood of Jesus Christ and
his Real Presence in the Eucharist. In our celebration of Mass on this day we are reminded of the
love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ as we receive the Eucharist. Following Mass we have a number
of guest speakers who will talk to the students about how their organisation is responding to the
Corporal Works of Mercy, and the special ways that we can show love for our neighbour in this Year
of Mercy.
Our annual Open Evening was held on Tuesday and we had a great number of visitors arrive who
were then guided around the College site by students. Once again our wonderful students were the
best ambassadors for us. Many students were here to assist in the evening and were positive,
enthusiastic and very genuine in their friendly welcome of all the visitors. Our teachers were all here
with displays to showcase the work of their students and to answer any questions. I am very grateful
for the efforts of all the staff and students who work together to make this an excellent school.
This weekend Br Allan Henley celebrates his 80th birthday. After a life-time of devotion to Mary and
commitment to the Marist Brothers, Br Allan still maintains a presence here at school and volunteers
to assist teachers to guide and mentor individual students. We certainly appreciate the work of Br
Allan, Br Mark and Br Osmund and we wish Br Allan a very happy birthday for Saturday.
Our wonderful Mission Sisters of the Society of Mary, Sr Bertha and Sr Marietta have once again
started on the preparation programme for students to receive the Sacraments of Initiation. Any
student who has not been Baptised or who has not received the Sacrament of Eucharist,
Reconciliation or Confirmation is invited to join this programme.
Kuini Keti, Year 11, has been selected to ring our Peace Bell each day just before lunch. We invite all
of our community to pray for peace in our world.
May God bless you all,
Tony Shaw
Ka koa te hunga tohu tangata: e tohungia hoki ratou.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
The Peace Bell initiative sent to all Mission Sister Schools and Colleges from Sister Barbara Cameron,
rndm:
TOLLING THE PEACE BELL
At this time in our history when we’re witnessing the tragic
consequences of war and violence for so many throughout the
world, I’d like to invite your college/school to participate in the
ringing of a peace bell at school each day, during which staff and
students take a moment to pray for peace, Peace in his/her own
heart, Peace in our country and Peace in the world.
I have a little Peace Sanctuary here in Kiwitahi where I live as a
Mission Sister and I toll the sanctuary bell each evening. It is a way
of raising one’s awareness and, at the same time through a
moment of prayer, sending that peace energy out to the world.
It need only take a minute, using the beginning of day bell or lunch time/end of lunch bell, or a time
you choose, but a conscious moment of stillness and prayer for peace.
Imagine all that peace energy going out from our hearts into our world from all our schools and
colleges every day!
Sacramental Programme
Our Sacramental Programme for 2016 is about to commence. If
you have a child who would like to take part in this and has not

Rosemary Madden – RE Department
This week we give special thanks to God for those who have gone before us,
for all who have offered their lives to Catholic education here on this site and in schools
everywhere.
We give thanks for their commitment, their compassion, their willingness to share the
gospel through teaching and by their daily example.
God, you have called each of us by name to live in love and solidarity, to
be one in the great family of God's children.
You have called us, through the gifts of
Marcellin Champagnat and Euphrasie Barbier,
to communicate the fire and wisdom of the Holy Spirit in every part of our
lives, inspired by the Gospel.
You call us all to shine with the light of Christ.
May we reflect this in all we say and do, in the name of Christ Jesus.
Amen.
Jeanne Clemens – Assistant Principal

Container for Samoa
Next term I am very excited to be taking a term’s leave to Volunteer at St Joseph’s College in
Apia. This is our Marist school in Samoa.
After some hard years post-earthquake getting our house rebuilt, Jeff and I decided that this year
was our year to help others, so the two of us and our daughter Arna are heading away for an
adventure. We will be staying with the Marist brothers in Apia and helping out there. Arna, our
daughter, will be attending a local primary school.
After the Samoa trip by Cathedral College students in 2015, we realised how few resources the
schools in Samoa have. Therefore part of our journey is to
try to get a container full of resources over to Samoa and
distribute them, not just to St Josephs, but the poorer of
the island schools as well.
Jeff has met with the Bay cluster of schools and already has
most of the container full of resourcesThe problem we now
face is the $7500 cost to get the container to Samoa.
Mt Pleasant School (Arna’s school) has set up a ‘give a little’
account to cover this cost.
We would really appreciate the Cathedral College school community getting behind this.
It would be wonderful to have your help.

PTA Second Hand Uniform Sale
The PTA will be holding a second hand uniform sale after school on the last Friday of every month
during term-time.
There is an urgent demand for more kilts, cardigans and Jerseys and trousers for the Second hand
Uniform store. If you have items that you are happy to sell or wish to donate, please drop them into
the Office in a clean, saleable state.

Trip to Antarctic Centre
Last week the Year 13 History class went to the Antarctic Centre as part of our study into the Heroic
Era of Antarctic exploration. We met penguins and huskies and experienced the freezing
temperatures of the storm room. It was a ‘cool’ and educational experience thoroughly enjoyed by
all.
Items Wanted for St Vincent de Paul
St Vincent de Paul have put a call out for donations of winter clothing and
blankets. If these items could be dropped off at either the Stanmore Rd or
Papanui shops it would be very much appreciated.

recommended indoor temperature of 18 degrees C in winter.
Help is available from Community Energy Action, a charitable trust

Whether you rent or own your own home they have ways of improving
your indoor temperature to make your home a healthier place to live.
They have helped over 20,000 families in Christchurch by providing free
or subsidised heating devices, insulation and curtains.
Phone Community Energy Action on 0800 438 9276, or I can contact
them for you. Email me on [email protected], or let me know
at the school health clinic.
Keep warm and well this winter.
Physio Services Available at School
Jeremy McTear is a physio from Health & Sport Central who is available at the
College on Wednesdays at 11.15am
This service is generally free for students and staff (there may be charges if he needs
to order braces or uses a lot of supplies). Those who need to can complete an ACC
form on site but if students have been seen elsewhere (eg Afterhours or their GP’s)
they need to bring their ACC details with them.
To book an appointment, students need to see the school nurse or Mrs Best in the
student office. They will then be put on a list and the runner will contact them on
the day.
Jeremy can also see students and staff at the central city clinic – Health and Sport Central at a
special discounted rate. The contact number is 03 366 0088
