Commodore’s Report
The truth is that your Commodore has been off the grid all summer and is writing and
sending this from some very flakey Wifi on some very worn out rickety docks at Port
Browning on Pender Island.** The power is occasionally 15 amps before the entire
dock loses power completely. There is water only if you fill a 5 gallon jug and carry
it to your boat from the base of the ramp.* Ok, this is great, right, and what summer
boating is all about.
We’re now in our eighth week on board and have enjoyed it all, even here, at the
worst of the docks we have met.
We have also been at anchor a fair bit of the summer and that has been great as
well. The use of the anchor alarm on our Garmin has been most reassuring. We
have also used reciprocals along the way at Port Ludlow, Oak Harbor and Royal Victoria Yacht Club. We have been nicely welcomed at each and have flown our
EHYC burgee proudly.
This has been our longest boat journey ever and we plan to stay out until after the
Gig Harbor Club cruise. That will mean a total of about 10 1/2 weeks without mail
(that will be fun to come home to), cars (batteries to charge), newspapers (this has
been a good thing, all things considered) and all the other regular events of every
day land living.
Mostly, we’ve been spending our time enjoying and appreciating the beauty all
around us in the Washington and BC waters. Simple things like tides and currents,
sunrises, sunsets and the moon, finding water to drink (and other beverages), monitoring the weather and keeping the engine happy are much more pleasurable than
keeping track of politics, at least for us. Our Kindles have given us lots of reading
options which this trip has allowed us to explore.
So, Yvonne and I hope that your summer has so far been as pleasurable as ours
and that you have been boating safely and wearing loud shirts.

Footnotes:
**To be fair to Port Browning Marina, this is the last year for it in this condition. It
has been bought by Mill Bay Group and will be completely redone, new docks, power and private water reserves by next summer. To see what can be done, head
over to Mill Bay Marina in Saanich Inlet, which is now all brand new, beautiful, sturdy
and has a great restaurant, Bridgemans. The crew at Port Browning has been exceptionally welcoming and helpful and the pub is great with really good food. Let's
see next year.
***Any rumors about prizes at Gig Harbor involving me or my boat are not true.
There was a typo and the notice was meant to state that prizes would be cruises with
PAST Commodore Dunstan on board Sea Turtle.
Vice Commodore’s Report
I hope everyone is enjoying this stellar weather! After a lovely visit with my
granddaughter Jordan that included two sailing trips, I’m ready for Gig Harbor
and beyond.
Normally I worry about hypothermia but with our current weather, let me stress the heat. Sunscreen
(remember to reapply frequently), a good hat that protects your head and ears, polarized sunglasses for
everyone on board (had a short lecture for Jordan
about saving her retinas), and hydration.
Alcohol is NOT considered
hydration - sorry. It may hit the spot but alcohol will
actually dehydrate you - think beer and potty
breaks. So - water, iced tea, juice, any liquid that is
non-alcoholic to quench your thirst before you start to
imbibe. Kinda sound like your mother don’t I ha ha?
Don’t forget your pets. Cool room-temp water is best
for pets. Offer it often during trips. Keep those potty
pads handy :-)
Enjoy the remaining summer and stay safe!

Rear Commodore’s Report
This month I thought I would write about FLASH CRUISES, those impromptu, informal, "Hey let's meet on the water tomorrow" events.
These cruises are consistent with the motto of our club, “Boat Safely and Wear a
Loud Shirt” and our relaxed, fun-based philosophy. Following the awesome
"formal" cruise to Roche Harbor (thank you again, cruise captains!) several of us
met in nearby Reid Harbor for a flash cruise. Michael Zimmer, the Canters, the
Marlers and the Randalls all joined us.The McCaugheys were in nearby Prevost
Harbor. We met up with Dave and Nancy and hiked to the light house. Following
the Stewart Island stopover, we cruised with the Randalls to Deer Harbor and
then onto Sucia Island, before heading home via La Conner.
There is talk of a flash cruise around Bainbridge. That sounds like great fun. Of
course, off season runs to Blake Island are always a possibility. And Manzanita
Bay anyone? So, if you have a flash cruise idea, let one of the bridge officers
know and we'll pass the word.
And one last unrelated plug for Boat US/Vessel Assist. We never thought we
would need help with a mechanical breakdown on the water. Although the issue
(transmission oil line) is now addressed, it took two tows over the past year (we
thought it was fixed the first time and were finally able to get the experts in Everett to remove the culprit, a trolling valve.). Also kudos to the Coast Guard who
contacted Vessel Assist for us and stood by to be sure we didn't drift into Hat
Island!
