An altude of a cylinder is a perpendicular segment that joins the planes of the bases. The height of a cylinder is the length of the altude. The lateral area of a cylinder is the area of the curved surface. The surface area of a cylinder is the sum of the lateral areas and the areas of the 2 circular bases. 4 Lesson 11.2 Day 2.notebook April 02, 2013 Theorem 11.2 ‐ Lateral and Surface Areas of Cylinders L.A. = 2πrh OR πdh S.A. = LA + 2B OR 2π rh + 2π r2 Ex 3: The radius of the base of a cylinder is 6 , and its height is 9 . Find its surface area in terms of π. 5 Lesson 11.2 Day 2.notebook Ex 4: April 02, 2013 A company sells cornmeal and barley in cylindrical containers. The diameter of the base of the 6‐in high cornmeal container is 4‐in. The diameter of the base 4‐ in high barley container is 6‐in. Which container has the greater surface area? 6 Lesson 11.2 Day 2.notebook April 02, 2013 Homework: Page 612 #8‐12, 22, 25, 31, 33‐35 7
