Godly people give generously
to the poor. Their good deeds
will never be forgotten.
Since 2005, ABC retirees have
contributed over $2 million
through the annual Heritage of
Sharing appeal. The help you
extend provides a lifeline that
often keeps a colleague from the
brink of despair. Your generous
support provides blessings to
those who have dedicated their
lives to our American Baptist
family.
Gifts of any size are gratefully
received, 100% tax-deductible—
and can be structured as a
bequest, a gift in memory
and/or name of a loved one
and more. Even small amounts
go a long way to help others
in need.

2011 GIVING
Dear Friend of MMBB:
As MMBB looks back at our first hundred years, we are proud of the countless
ministers, missionaries and colleagues we’ve been able to support through
your remarkable and heartfelt generosity.
At the same time that we celebrate the past, we look ahead. We see challenges in the increasingly complex social, cultural and economic environment. Assisting others in times of great change requires long-term vision
and energetically growing our endowment, to meet fiscal emergencies not
yet in sight.
As you know, our ministers and their lay staffs—who have dedicated their
lives to the needs of their congregations—have their own needs. Often there
comes a time of testing when practical answers must be found.
The MMBB endowment is a deep and special resource that allows us to
support those who have dedicated their own lives to serving others in the
American Baptist Churches community. In 2011 alone, MMBB provided more
than $4 million dollars in assistance to ABCUSA ministers, missionaries and
lay employees. In all, nearly $244 million dollars have been distributed to
those in need since the endowment began nearly a century ago.
There are many ways in which the Heritage of Sharing program touches lives
and helps to alleviate suffering due to the financial distress of our members.
And there are many ways in which participants in MMBB give back so that
others may benefit.
In the past year, we were gratified by the remarkable generosity of how
many of our friends were inspired to contribute to this program. The reasons
for their contributions are diverse, but they are unified in their desire to help
those who have spent a lifetime in God’s service. This report highlights three
of these generous donors—the Rev. Dr. Henry H. Mitchell, a retired ABC
minister and professor; Mrs. Karen Radcliffe, the widow of an ABC minister;
and Rev. Thomas G. Bayes, Jr. and his wife Dianne, who are part of the
President’s Legacy Circle.
We urge you to give to the Heritage of Sharing campaign with an open heart
and spirit so we can continue to assist those who sacrificed much to serve
the Lord. Many thanks for taking the time out of your busy lives to consider
our annual appeal.
—2 Corinthians 9:9
With warmest regards,
Sumner M. Grant

STAYING STRONG AT THE CENTER
TOWARD A KINDER, MORE LOVING WORLD
Rev. Dr. Henry H. Mitchell, Atlanta, GA
Retired ABC Pastor, writer and professor
Rev. Thomas G. Bayes, Jr. and Dianne Bayes
First Baptist Church of Bloomington, IL
Of the many hats Rev. Dr. Henry Mitchell has worn over his long and
achievement-filled life, perhaps the one of which he is most proud is that
of husband and father. His 64-year marriage to Rev. Dr. Ella Pearson Mitchell
ended with her death in 2008. And, as a tribute to his wife, he made a
pledge to the Heritage of Sharing Annual Appeal in her memory.
The Rev. Thomas G. Bayes, Jr., graduated from Colgate Rochester Crozer
Divinity School in 1975. A freshly minted minister, he was not savvy to
the world of finance and investing. “I was a young guy right out of the
seminary, and I knew nothing about planning for retirement. At my
first post, I met an MMBB rep for the first time, and I really felt that he
cared about me and my financial future.”
“I want to be sure that we stay strong at the center,” Dr. Mitchell explains,
when asked about the tribute gift. I feel that MMBB and their Heritage of
Sharing program provides a robust core so that the ABC can stay focused
on the vital and shared goals of the church and those who serve.”
Dr. Mitchell knows of what he speaks. Born in Cleveland, OH, in 1919 and soon
to be 93, he has seen the Baptist faith evolve since his early days as a student at
Union Theological Seminary in New York City.
“In those days,” reflected Dr. Mitchell, “more than most people realize, the
curriculum in seminaries was geared to white middle class students.
Anyone who was culturally different in any way was not part of the theology
or the theological preparation. There was no black theology.”
In 1979, when Reverend Bayes married his beloved wife Dianne they
set off on their life together. Financial planning became a big part of their
commitment to each other and to the American Baptist Churches. “I chose MMBB for
retirement planning,” said Tom, “because the genuine care and concern that their reps
showed to us at the time meant a great deal to Dianne and me.”
Dr. Henry Mitchell and
Dr. Ella Mitchell
The work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the rise of the civil rights movement, and the
establishment of The Southern Christian Leadership Conference in the 50s and 60s shifted
this prospective. More emphasis was given to the differences in preaching and teaching to
African-American churchgoers.
Dr. Mitchell, who holds a doctorate in American church history, was honored to be named the first Martin
Luther King Jr. Memorial Professor of Black Church Studies at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School
(CRCDS). The position was established following Dr. King’s death in 1968; Mitchell held it from 1969-1974.
In 1977, his commitment to bringing ABC teachings and values to the African-American community led
Henry and Ella Mitchell to found The Ecumenical Center for Black Church Studies based in Los Angeles.
All along his prodigious path, his cherished spouse, Ella, was by his side. Henry and Ella met as students
at Union Theological Seminary. She was only the second African-American woman to graduate from the
school. Partners in family and faith, the Mitchells —together and individually—went on to distinguished
careers as pioneers in the field of African-American preaching and religious education. Dr. Ella, as she was
called by many, was the first female dean of Sisters Chapel at Spelman College in Atlanta and a renowned
preacher in her own right.
The Mitchells splendidly filled the gap in Baptist theology for African-Americans—and women.
“I believe in the American Baptist heritage and I have strong feelings about the importance of
coordination and cooperation,” said Dr. Mitchell, who has touched so many lives in such a positive
way. “And I can think of no better way to honor Ella’s work and memory, than by supporting MMBB .”
2
Rev. Thomas G. Bayes, Jr.
and Dianne Bayes
This early connection with MMBB eventually led the Bayes to make a serious commitment to the
organization through Heritage of Sharing. They joined the President’s Legacy Circle––an opportunity
to make deferred gifts to MMBB, such as bequests, legacies and other forms of endowment.
Over 35 years as an active pastor has offered Tom a satisfying professional life while Dianne pursued
master’s degrees in both biology and math. Now retired, Dianne taught high school math for many
years. At the same time, the Bayes’ raised their son, Brandon, now a financial professional.
“The ministry is a wonderful profession but a challenging one,” said Tom. “We counsel many others,
but when we need help ourselves, there is often no one to turn to. In all three of my pastorates over
the years, I’ve seen MMBB pitch in and give financial assistance to members of the ABC family with
medical bills, legal bills and other needs. In one church MMBB stepped in and paid for a much-needed
new furnace for a minister and his family.”
“It is this type of commitment,” said Tom, “that inspired Dianne and me to take the step of designating
MMBB as a significant beneficiary of our estate. In that way, not only would our gift provide timeless
support and sustenance to MMBB, but it would create a means to express our appreciation to an
organization that genuinely cares about pastors who have served God so faithfully.”
As members of the President’s Legacy Circle, the Bayes have put no constraints on how their bequest
is used. “Dianne and I were intentional and conscientious when we determined the beneficiaries in
our living trust. We felt blessed to have the financial means to continue a legacy of caring.
“Gifts beyond our death will continue our commitment to the mission and ministry of Christ and his
church and will provide needed resources to those that hold the same religious, ethical and cultural
values we share and have supported all our adult lives.”

A LIVING, BREATHING, WALKING, TALKING MIRACLE
WHAT HERITAGE OF SHARING MEANS
Karen Radcliffe
Bay Village, OH
Each year, the Heritage of Sharing program engenders many letters and notes of thanks from
members of our extended ABC family. Many of these inspiring acknowledgements reflect the
deep gratitude of those who have benefited from our program, and others are from donors
who wish to support our sustaining programs. The following is a sampling of some of
these communications:
“I am a living, breathing, walking, talking miracle.” These are the moving words of Karen Radcliffe,
the widow of an ABC minister and they are accurate in many ways. For Karen’s story is not an easy
one, but it reflects a triumph of both spirit and generosity.
In January 1991, the Rev. William H. Radcliffe, Karen’s husband and pastor of the Badger Grove
Community Church in Brookston, Indiana, was brutally murdered in a robbery attempt at an
Interstate rest stop—leaving his widow with a young son to raise and educate, as well as an adult son.
Karen has also faced life-threatening health challenges of her own. She underwent two hip replacements
and quadruple by-pass surgery.
“Before he was killed, Bill had a retirement plan with MMBB,” says Karen, who’s disabled. “MMBB has
helped me over the years, mostly with medical costs since my medicines cost $10,000 a year, which
I can’t afford. Recently, I needed that help again and thought it was worth asking MMBB if they could
help, once more.
“I was totally speechless when I got a letter in reply to my request stating that they were going to
help me with part of the money I needed for medical bills AND also that MMBB was going to send
me a monthly grant to supplement my income. Wow! What an incredible miracle!”
But, Karen also felt that she wanted to give back—to keep the circle of abundance flowing. “The Lord
has taken very good care of me all of my life,” she said. “After receiving this unbelievable news from
MMBB, I decided that I wanted to tithe a 10th of the money that the Heritage of Sharing sends me so
that the Lord can direct MMBB to give it to someone who needs it every bit as much as I do.”
As Karen describes herself so touchingly, “You see,” she finished, “I AM a living, breathing, walking,
talking miracle, and I know it. MMBB has helped me over the years. However this is the first time I
realized, keenly, that I am able to help others who are in the same boat as I am. Someday, perhaps,
I won’t need the grant, but I will always send some of my tithe to the Heritage of Sharing. It has been
such a tremendous blessing to me. I know first-hand their commitment to the work of the Lord.”
“Being part of a family of believers in this world of chaos confirms the love and mercy of Our Lord. Although
you will never know the joy in our hearts when we received the check to help pay for my wife’s surgery, you
can be assured that a fellow pastor was aided in a financial squeeze.”
—A retired pastor, Kansas.
“God Bless my friends at MMBB for their generous help. The hurricanes of Irene and Maria have destroyed
most of my Puerto Rican home. I lost my floor and most of my roof, but fifty-seven years of pastoring have
shown me that God never abandons me—and I have seen the hand of God more than once. May God
always give you at MMBB physical and spiritual blessings in abundance. Bendiga a M.M.B.B y a mi Dios!”
—A pastor, Puerto Rico.
“I thank God and each one of you (at MMBB) for a check to clear up my medical bills. This has lifted a
considerable weight from me. I thought about the scripture that says not to be anxious for anything.
When we pray to God for help with issues, problems, or illness, we can leave it in His hands and believe
that it will be answered one way or another.”
—A widow of a pastor, California.
“I am grateful to you (at MMBB) for responding to my financial need in such a short time. Your response
during this time has reassured me that the American Baptist family does indeed care for its members.
Thank you again for the emergency assistance. Please be assured that the funds will be wisely used as
I regain my financial equilibrium.”
—A pastor, Connecticut.
“Ever since the death of my husband in 1967, I have had many reasons to thank God for MMBB. I taught my
children that the concern of our Baptist family represented the concern and love of the churches that my
husband had served. As a one-hundred-year-old survivor, I say God bless you as you carry on!”
—Widow of a pastor, Minnesota.
“Please know that my wife and I are truly grateful and most appreciative of the generosity of MMBB over
the years. Your organization will always be in our hearts and prayers. Thank you for the care of those of us
who are usually caring for others at our own and our family’s expense. You do make a big difference in
our lives and our ministries.”
—A pastor, Ohio.

Making a Gift of
Retirement Assets
Many wise donors are now using
their retirement account remaining
balances and assets as they plan their
deferred charitable gifts. Here’s why
this is a particularly effective strategy:
Retirement account assets left to
family members (other than your
spouse) may be subject to higher
taxation than other types of assets.
By using retirement account assets
for your deferred charitable giving—
and leaving different types of assets
to family members—you may be
able to reduce taxes that otherwise
would be imposed on those assets
and leave more to your intended
beneficiaries.
