11 FEBRUARY 2015
1ST XI V BISHOPS DAY/NIGHT
RBHS 266 FOR 7 - WON BY 170 RUNS
U19A VS BISHOPS - DAY/NIGHT FIXTURE
On Wednesday the fourth of February the Rondebosch 1st Xl
squared off with rivals, Bishops, in the much anticipated
Day/Night fixture. We won the toss and elected to bat first. A
brilliant opening stand of 74, between Ryan Klein and Gavin
Kaplan, ended when Kaplan was dismissed in the sixteenth over
for a well-played 32 runs. Bishops struck shortly after, removing the
in-form Klein (42 runs off 56 balls) with the score reading 87 for 2. A
match-winning 103 run partnership, between Dayyaan Galiem
and Jesse Christensen, set us up to finish on a mammoth 266/7 in
our allotted 45 overs. Congratulations to Galiem who scored 71
runs off 55 balls before chipping it back to the bowler; and to
Jesse Christensen who scored 71 off 69 balls, before being caught
at cover.
After the supper interval Bishops set about the unlikely task of
chasing the 266 runs in 270 balls. The innings got off to a dismal
start for the hosts as opener Reece Conrad was trapped in front
by a fired up Galiem. Klein was up to his usual antics, bowling with
great control and extracting prodigious seam movement from
the pitch. He was eventually rewarded for his efforts by trapping
Tom Richardson in front. The introduction of Dan Moriarty saw the
lanky, left arm bowler strike twice in quick succession to send
Bishops plummeting to 31 for 6.
Bishops showed some resistance to bowling all-rounder Matthew
Rudston and opener Calvin Wilson in the form of a 36 run
partnership for the seventh wicket, before they were scuttled
cheaply for a total of 96 all out.
Congratulations to Junaid Dawood who returned respectable
figures of 2 for 13 in 5.3 overs in his hundredth game and to all the
bowlers who chipped in with wickets and bowled in partnerships.
Rondebosch won by a 170 runs.
U19A VS SACS - NATIONAL T20 KNOCK OUT TOURNAMENT
Monday the second of February saw the Rondebosch 1st Xl host
SACS in the semi final of the National Knockout T20 tournament.
We won the toss and elected to bat, a decision that was
vindicated by the respectable 165/5 we scored in our allotted 20
overs. The destroyers in chief were top order batters Ryan Klein
(37 runs off 28 balls) and Dayyaan Galiem (40 runs off 36 balls).
They set up a platform for Gavin Kaplan to combine with
Muzammil Sheik for a brilliant 67 run partnership. Sheik played a
gem of an innings, scoring 37 runs off 18 balls.
SACS came out to bat and were not going to die wondering as
they raced to 42 after five overs. The introduction of Ryan Klein
halted the SACS charge as he struck in his first two overs. The tide
seemed to have turned in our favour as we bowled a couple of
tidy overs, which was combined with some poor running between
the wickets by SACS.
However, the game was right in the balance after SACS scored
more than 10 an over from overs 14 to 17. At the start of the
eighteenth over SACS required approximately 30 runs, with three
wickets in hand and the momentum in their favour. A brilliant
nineteenth over by Max Pike, conceding only six runs, finally put
the game to rest in a pulsating humdinger of a semi final. SACS
were bowled out in the twentieth over for a 152. It was a narrow,
but well-earned 13 run victory for the Bosch men.

U19A VS SACS
Saturday the seventh of February saw the 1st XI host local rivals
Sacs in an all-day declaration fixture. SACS won the toss and
elected to bowl on a pitch that could best be described as a
batting paradise. An opening stand of 71 runs between Bosch
openers, Jesse Christensen and Gavin Kaplan, was brought to an
end when Christensen held out to deep midwicket and was
dismissed for a well-played 41. As so often with the loss of a
wicket, another fell shortly after, this time in the form of the Bosch
captain, Murray Commins.
Aaqil Ebrahim scored 102 not out
At the morning drinks interval we found ourselves on 72/2 after 27
overs. Dayyaan Galiem joined Kaplan at the crease and the pair
moved the score along nicely with a partnership of 65 runs.
Galiem looked set for another big knock before also being
caught on the boundary. At the lunch interval the score was
197/3 after 52 overs. An onslaught after lunch saw us race to a
mammoth 279/3 in 62.3 overs before the captain’s declaration
came. Both Gavin Kaplan and Aaqil Ebrahim scored unbeaten
centuries and shared an unbeaten fourth wicket stand of 143
runs!
SACS started their run chase with a quick flurry of runs before
Ryan Klein and Eddy Bester struck in quick succession, leaving the
visitors staring down the barrel at 23/2. A commendable SACS
partnership ensued and at tea the score was 78/2 after 25 overs.
A good piece of fielding at backward point by Junaid Dawood
saw the back of middle order batter, Ben Koen, and ignited a
massive surge towards victory by the Bosch men. The next four
wickets fell for just 26 runs as SACS decided to close shop. We
plugged away with both spin and seam, but in our allotted 67
overs only managed to pick up eight of the 10 scalps required for
victory. The pick of the bowlers was Dawood, who returned
figures of 4/30 in 20 overs. SACS’s score at the end of play read
143/8 in 67 overs. Thus the result of the match was a draw.
Gavin Kaplan scored 103 not out. Rondebosch batted first
making 279/3 declared. In reply SACS held out
at 143/8 - match drawn

U19B VS SACS
After our first match performance
the boys were really eager to go
to SACS and have a really good
day. After arriving and having a
look at the pitch we were really
keen on batting first. All went
according to plan and even
though we lost the toss we were
sent in to bat.
After the first few overs and a few
early wickets, we managed to
put things back on track. Keegan
Collier had a good day with the
bat and pulled us out of the fire.
After Collier lost his wicket it was up to Joffvre Dumminy and
Matthew Roman to build a partnership. They did this really well
and Roman top scored with 31 before he went out. Towards the
end of the innings Mike Mavovana came in and pushed the total
up to a defendable one. At the end of the innings we ended on
158.
It was then up to SACS to chase this down. SACS got off to a
really slow start and this is how they ended too. We put a lot of
pressure on them with some really tight bowling from the boys but
we were, unfortunately, unable to bowl them out. It was an all
round good bowling performance from our bowling attack. SACS
ended up on 78/7 at the end of play.
The match ended in a draw but we were happy with the day’s
play even though it didn’t favour us.
U19C VS SACS
With the Kings’ skipper, Jamie King, losing the toss, SACS decided
to send Bosch in to bat and back their bowlers to do the damage
early. However, this proved to be a mistake that saw the Kings
reach a mammoth 235/5 after only 35 overs. The foundation was
set by the opening pair of Jesse Davids and Devon Arendse, who
had a partnership of 52 before Arendse skied a full toss for 28.
Shortly after that Davids was run out for 21 and SACS seemed to
be gaining some momentum.
Then up stepped the bulky duo of Nicholas Witten and Nicholas
Giger who went on to score 66 and 99 not out, respectively.
These two, with their power hitting, classy stroke-play and hard
running, took the game away from SACS and put the Kings in a
dominating position going into the half way break. Giger
especially, played a mature and well-constructed innings and
was unlucky not to push on to get a deserved century.
With such a massive total to defend the bowlers could be patient
and wait for the break through to come. Jamie Davids and
Yaseen Jacobs were superb at the forefront of the bowling
attack and, whilst they only took a wicket a piece, their patient
and economical opening spells allowed the other bowlers to
capitalise on a panicking SACS outfit. With the run-rate increasing
every over, Jamie King and Fynn Wilson bowled exceptional
spells, toppling the SACS top and middle order and setting up the
win. King ended with figures of 3/24 and Wilson 3/4, which
enabled an emphatic 142 run victory for the Kings.
U19D VS SACS
After a successful start to the season, the 4th XI was looking to
build on their performance of the previous week. For the second
week in a row, Rondebosch won the toss and elected to bat.
A slightly shuffled batting order, to give everyone a chance in the
beginning of the season, got off to a steady start. The unlucky,
early dismissal of George Williams-Sales to a delivery which
popped up off a length, gave Matthew Ginsberg (34 off 37 balls)
his first real batting opportunity in the 4th XI. Together with Fuzail
Dawood (49 off 55 balls), the pair put on a 75 run, second wicket
partnership off 69 balls. Matthew Visser was once again reliable,
adding 24 runs off just 11 deliveries to spur the team on to a
respectable, but below par total of 136/5.
Opening bowlers Ethan Seymour (2/9 in 4 overs) and Matthew
Visser (2/13 in 4 overs) did superbly to restrict SACS to 11/1 in the
opening six overs. They were superbly backed up by first change
seamer Rene du Toit (0/10 in 4 overs) and Cal Smid (1/7 in 2
overs). Jonathan Reynders, Josh Stredder and Dawood each
chipped in with a wicket of their own to keep SACS to just 110/8 in
their allotted 20 overs.
At the end of the day, Rondebosch recorded a comfortable 26
run victory. More importantly, however, the team managed to
tick their second box of the season, keeping SACS to below 120
runs. There is definitely room for improvement and I look forward
to watching the boys rise to even more challenges over the
course of the season.

U19E VS SACS
Rondebosch U19E took on SACS on Tuesday the third of February
on the Meadow A field. Rondebosch won the toss and elected to
bat. The opening pair of Thomas and Liam Everitt started slowly as
Thomas was dismissed for a score of four. The captain, Liam
Nesbitt, then came to the crease and joined Everitt as they put
together a good partnership of 40, playing shots all around the
ground. The captain was dismissed for 20.
Everitt then kept the scoreboard ticking as he played big shots.
He was well supported by Jason who made 36 runs. Valuable
contributions also came from Matthew and Adam Roux with the
bat. After batting the allotted 20 overs, Everitt finished on 97 not
out as he ran out of balls to reach triple figures. Rondebosch
finished their innings on 199 for 5 in 20 overs.
SACS then came in to bat and they didn't have a great start as
they lost early wickets. The required run rate kept on increasing as
the Rondebosch boys kept bowling good balls and restricted the
runs. Rondebosch used seven bowlers and Justin Gillett was the
pick of the bowlers with figures of 2 for 13 in three overs. The other
six bowlers all got a wicket each as SACS only managed to make
82 for 7 in their 20 overs.
Liam Everitt was the “Man of the Match” and Rondebosch won
the game by 117 runs
U15A VS SACS
Playing cricket against SACS, you never know what to expect.
We arrived on Saturday morning as a team that knew what we
wanted to do and to play according to our strengths.
Winning the toss and sending SACS into bat paid off in a huge
way. We bowled them out for only 32 runs, which just showed us
that this team has come a far way. The best bowlers were Dylan
Swanepoel - 4/4 in 9 overs - and Josh Pistorius - 3/11 in 5 overs.
We passed the score with no wicket down! The
best batsmen were Justin Broad with 20 not out and Pistorius with
10 not out.
RBHS won by 10 wickets.

U15C VS SACS
The U15C’s played SACS on Saturday at Bosch. After winning the
toss, we decided to bat. The innings got off to an emphatic start
and the openers kept on flying after that. The top order really
stepped up today and showed what they can do, with three of
our top five getting 30 or more runs. James Hazell was the pick of
our batsmen with a quick-fire 47. Bosch went on to score 230/7,
setting SACS 231 for victory.
SACS had an appalling start to their innings and that was thanks
to some excellent bowling from our openers. Miles Louw was in
the mix with a good opening spell, which saw him get two
wickets in his second over. Consistent bowling saw our bowlers
restrict SACS’s scoring opportunities. Thanks to that and some
excellent fielding, we could limit SACS to 37 all out.
U15D VS SACS
The U15D’s played SACS on Wednesday at Bosch. After losing the
toss we were put in to bat. The innings got off to a fantastic start
and kept on accumulating after each over. The top order really
stepped up and showed what they can do, with three of our top
five getting 20 or more runs. Bosch went on to score 129/4, setting
SACS 130 for victory.
SACS had an abysmal start to their innings but that was exactly
what we wanted. Aidan Franke was in the mix with a good
opening spell, which saw him get a wicket. Consistent bowling
saw our bowlers limit SACS’s scoring opportunities. Our top bowler
for the day was Liam Steyn, who got 3/10 off 3 overs. Thanks to
that and some excellent fielding, we restricted SACS to 51 all out.
Our “Man of the match” was Lukhanyo Nayo
U14A VS SACS
This was the first of the traditional derbies and Rondebosch, on
paper, were the side to beat. It is pleasing to note that after
winning the toss, the Rondebosch batsmen showed good
application to grind it out on a pitch that was quite difficult to
score off. Kyle Lesch (35) showed the way with great
temperament. After the fall of a relatively early wicket, Lehan
Botha (29) joined Lesch in a 50 run partnership that was crucial, in
terms of laying the foundation for the middle order.
The slow scoring rate of 1.5 runs per over was irrelevant as after
tea the boys pushed on: a magnificent display of power hitting,
way beyond the years of an U14, took the score to 230 for 6
declared. Cole Walbrugh, 64, and Douglas Cox, 77, entertained
in their 100 run partnership - and this was one of the better
displays I have seen as an U14 coach, particularly as the pitch
and outfields were not conducive to stroke making.
SACS came in to defend and Botha, as the first change bowler,
produced a good ball to break the opening stand. Jordan Collier
looked threatening and took the next wicket. The next eight
wickets all went to spinners. Guy Sheena (3/22) created problems
with some good rip. Aiden Rooke (2/21) produced one of the
best arm balls that I have seen to dismiss the danger man of SACS
and then Mathew MacLeod Smith delivered just the perfect type
of off-spin deliveries needed to clean up the tail.
This was a convincing win with some clinical and professional
performances and the challenge will be to keep up the discipline
against some strong sides.
U14B VS SACS
The U14B’s had their first traditional derby of the year as they
faced SACS at SACS.
SACS won the toss and elected to bowl, a decision we were
more than happy with. Gustaf Pienaar and Fayyaad Galiem got
the team off to a solid enough start before Galiem was bowled in
an attempt to up the run rate. Pienaar was joined at the crease
by Noah Kriger and together they put on a 33 run partnership for
the second wicket before Pienaar was dismissed for a wellplayed 45. We then lost Tyler Siebert, Kyle Klein and Kriger for the
addition of just 26 runs but Josh King compiled a very handy 33
not out off 36 balls to see us to 171/6 in 35 overs.
Gary Allen and Michael Moore opened the attack. Although
they did not pick up any wickets they did a good job in keeping
the scoring rate down. It was the introduction of Jake Tredoux
that gave us the advantage as he ripped through the SACS top
order with a fiery spell of four wickets. There were times that the
SACS batsmen had no answer for Tredoux as he set up the innings
for a well-deserved victory. Fraser Sleet, Moore and Allen all
picked up a scalp a piece but it was Tredoux who deservedly
picked up his fifth wicket of the day to end with figures of 5/19 in
seven overs. SACS eventually limped to 127/8 in their 35 overs.
Another good outing for the U14B’s as we look forward to our first
home game of the year against Fish Hoek.
U14C
In another weekly 20/20 fixture we won the toss and decided to
bat. We lost a wicket on the first ball of the game and the run
rate started off slowly in the first five overs. Towards the end of our
innings we picked up the run rate and Luke Borain had a good
knock towards the end helping us to a total of 106 runs.
Our opening bowlers, Michael Moore and Luke Pillay, both
bowled excellently up front with great economy and they picked
up a couple of wickets. Unfortunately, our fielding was not up to
standard and we also conceded 35 extras which cost us the
game. SACS passed our score with just three balls remaining in
the match.
This was a lesson that fielding and discipline are vital to win
games.
U14D VS SACS
Rondebosch won the toss and elected to bat first. We scored
113/7 in 20 overs and Paul Rossouw hit 50 off 46 balls. SACS scored
58/8 in 20 overs and Eric Jacobs took 2/14. Rondebosch won by
55 runs.
