W.P. Kinsella
Russian Dolls
Stories from the Breathing Castle
From the distinguished W.P. Kinsella comes his final work – a series
of linked stories wrapped in a novel.
R
ussian Dolls weaves in and out of the real and imaginary worlds
of Wylie, a struggling author and self-proclaimed “unreliable
narrator”, as he finds and then loses his muse, Christie, in their
shared home – aptly named the “Breathing Castle” – in East
Vancouver. Woven into the story of their relationship are Wylie’s short
stories – at once bold, humorous, whimsical and reflective. The mood
of the stories ranges from good to bad to worse, depending on his
relationship with his muse at the time.
Meanwhile, the stories Christie chooses to tell Wylie about her past
are captivating, but are also dark and dangerously inconsistent. Are her
stories true? Or is the enticing but erratic Christie simply the better
storyteller of the two?
Kinsella remains as thought-provoking and engaging as ever. In
Russian Dolls he constructs a panorama of dozens of new characters,
all struggling to survive at the fringes of modern life, while at the
same time he creates an intimate portrait of a man, his typewriter, his
lover and his passion.
W. P. “Bill” Kinsella is the award-winning writer of dozens of fiction,
non-fiction, and poetry works, including Shoeless Joe (which was
made into the feature film Field of Dreams). Kinsella won the Leacock
Award in 1987 and in 1993 was made an Officer of the Order of
Canada. In 2005, he was awarded the Order of British Columbia, and
in 2009, he was awarded the George Woodcock Lifetime
Achievement Award. He died on September 16, 2016.

David Carpenter
The Gold
What makes people desperate for gold? And why is it worth the risk?
These are the questions award-winning author David Carpenter
explores in his new novel, The Gold.
A
s Joseph Burbidge comes to discover, finding gold in Canada's
North is less than half the battle. He is blessed with resolve and
with good partners to share the load. Stinky Riley is a wrangler and bush pilot who is Joe's first mentor in prospecting. Isidore
Chartrand is a hunter and trapper who accompanies Joe on his
northernmost odyssey, and more than once, saves Joe's life. Joe has to
fight to protect his claim, and this conflict sets in motion a moral
dilemma that will dog him for the rest of his life. On the long trail
from high adventure and romance to atonement, readers will meet
some delightful, complex, and sometimes malicious characters.
Carpenter's latest novel is a quest for more than one kind of gold.for
planes to land, and a dead body on his hands.

Linda Amyot
Adele’s Garden
The Governor General’s Award Winner for French-language Children’s
Literature. Translated from the French by Norman Cornett.
A
teenage girl befriends an elderly woman in this beautifully written tale of two women from different generations searching for
love and truth.
Wistful and profoundly intimate, Adele’s Garden follows the friendship
between a young woman, Elaine, and Adele, who is old enough to be
Elaine’s grandmother. Adele lives in an elegant old house with a
beautiful garden. After a chance encounter when Adele’s red hat
blows in the wind and lands at Elaine’s feet, the two women form an
immediate affinity for one another.
During a series of regular visits, Elaine tells Adele about her family,
friends and particularly about the boy at school on whom she has a
crush. Elaine’s confusion about the appearance of love in her life
sparks Adele to reflect on the one great love of her life, bringing
Adele and Elaine closer in ways neither expected. Their lives entwine,
one discovering love for the first time, the other reflecting on the one
true love of her life.
Bridging the gap between generations, Linda Amyot’s Adele’s Garden
is sublime – a poetic, resonating look at the strength of women and
the power of love.
Linda Amyot is an award-winning Canadian writer. The original
French version of Adele’s Garden, Le jardin d’Amsterdam was awarded
the Governor General’s Award for French-language children’s literature in 2014. Amyot received the Prix à la creation artistique awarded
by the Conseil des arts et des letters du Québec in 2011. She works
as an editor and as a writer of television documentaries and of audiovisual presentations for businesses.
Educator, religious studies scholar, and art critic, Norman Cornett,
PhD, publishes in Canadian and American journals. He “guest teaches” at universities throughout North America and Europe. He also
leads workshops in French and English on ‘dialogic’ teaching, creative
vision and artistic development. Further, Cornett authors and translates texts for museums, galleries, and individuals. He currently resides
in Montreal.

Katherine Lawrence
Stay
Millie is eleven (going on twelve) and enjoys doing what kids usually
like doing: riding her bike and dreaming of the day she can convince
her family to get a dog. She also writes in her diary daily. But instead
of writing to herself, she writes to her twin brother Billy, who died before
he was born. Alright, so it’s not totally normal, but it’s manageable.
M
illie’s life as she knows it comes to a screeching halt, however,
when her parents decide to separate. Her mother gets a new
boyfriend, and her father moves into a new place - an apartment - with a big sign on the door that says NO DOGS ALLOWED.
As she struggles to get her parents back together – not just for her sake,
but for the sake of her future dog as well – Millie is elated when her
father moves back in a short while later. She can’t understand why her
parents aren’t happy at the reconciliation until she learns the truth: her
father has moved back in because he has been diagnosed with cancer.

Told through the diary entries of Millie, Stay is a moving portrait of a
family in a time of crisis, whose pain is filtered through the thoughts
and actions of an eleven-year-old girl, capturing the essence of what
it means to grow up, confront your fears, support your family, and
share in the wild optimism that only youth can harbour.
Never one to shy away from tough issues, and constantly experimenting
with form, acclaimed Saskatchewan poet Katherine Lawrence shifts
successfully and beautifully into juvenile fiction with this moving
story-in-verse.
Katherine Lawrence is a writer whose award-winning poetry
includes Never Mind (Turnstone Books), Lying to Our Mothers (Coteau

Judith Silverthorne
Ghosts in the Garden
The sequel to Judith Silverthorne’s The Ghosts of Government House,
Ghosts in the Garden follows Sam and J.J. as they are again swept up
in the supernatural world of Saskatchewan’s Government House.
T
hings aren’t as they appear at Government House, as Sam and
J.J. soon discover on a field trip to the historic building, when
they find themselves discussing mushroom growth with George
Watt, the gardener of the property at the turn of the 20th century.
Just as quickly as they landed in the past, they’re back in the present,
mystified as to what happened and how they managed to travel back
in time.
When the class is assigned a project for the 125th anniversary of
Government House, J.J. and Sam use the opportunity to find more
information about the gardener and have a meeting with Alice, one
of the former housekeepers. But before they can begin, they’re confronted with a woman that no one else can see and she attempts to
speak to them, silently mouthing the word “watch”.
Who is this mysterious woman, and what does her ghost want with
Sam and J.J.? In order to solve the mystery, the girls must navigate the
grounds of Government House – a challenge because Sam and J.J. can’t
cross them without winding up in the past. And with only the faintest
idea of how to return to the present, their forays into the secrets and
history of Government House become dangerous. Can they figure out
what the ghost wants before they’re stuck in the past for good?
Judith Silverthorne is an award-winning author of children’s novels
and series, including the Dinosaur Adventure Series – Dinosaur
Hideout (which also has a Japanese edition), Dinosaur Breakout,
Dinosaur Stakeout and Dinosaur Blackout – as well as The Secret of
Sentinel Rock, The Secret of the Stone Circle, The Secret of the Stone House
and Convictions. Her most recent work is the multi-award-winning
Honouring the Buffalo (illustrated by Mike Keepness and told by Ray
Lavallee). She currently resides in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Terry Jordan
Been in the Storm So Long
Death and despair follow John Healy around like the sombre notes the fiddle
plays in the backroom of the local store in the Nova Scotia village he calls home.
B
een in the Storm So Long is a story of one man’s journey from the East Coast
of Canada to New Orleans and back, from whaler to thief, murder
accomplice to father and husband, alive to dead and back (more than once).
The intimate story of Healy’s life as he navigates an emotional journey fraught
with unbearable death and loss, keeps unspoken truths from those who matter
most, and finds redemption when all seems lost, is a story that transcends time. Can
John Healy leave what happened in the past where it belongs, or will it shape his
future in ways he can’t possibly imagine?

ew Albion follows the lives of the employees of the New Albion theatre in
London, England, in 1850, through the journal entries of the stage manager, Emlyn Phillips. Fighting its own reputation, hindered by its location and
"sketchy" (at best) audience, as well as a police commissioner who demands
"morally upstanding" plays, and a playwright so decrepit and addicted to laudanum
that the actors of the New Albion are never sure what to expect, the troupe
attempts to put on the best show possible, each and every night. The reader is
introduced to the entire company of actors, all of whom have their own set of
issues, who consistently band together as a community and family in the face of
every obstacle - and there are more than a few of those. As the theatre encounters
problem after problem, Phillips must decide how much he’s willing to sacrifice for
the sake of his passion.

Jim McLean
Nineteen Fifty-Seven
Jim McLean’s new poetry collection weaves in and out of the decades of experience accrued by the author in the thirty years since his first work was published –
creating an intimate world for the reader that is at the same time beautiful and
haunting.
N
ineteen Fifty-Seven is much more than a look at Prairie life after World War
II – with sections on Women, Family, Memories, Work, Writing and
Music – these poems are an exploration on what makes life worth living.
In plain language, McLean weaves fascinating, sentimental images of Moose Jaw
and the Prairie landscape, as well as stories of workers and the railroads. At the same
time, McLean creates a separate persona to move in an out of darker poems on
death, suicide, alcoholism and voyeurism. Through poems such as "my brother, who
I looked out for when we were kids", "After" and "about MacKay", McLean delves
into the heart of humanity: what keeps us alive, and what shapes our past, present,
and future.

“In modern preteen Will, Citra creates an enchanting character full of spunk,

hates, unable to write, and forced to move to a small town.
Will feels a sense of dread about his new home from the beginning. That is, until

“An exciting new series debut

“With Ariane and Wally both

…The Lake in the Clouds

Edward Willett has created

“The rebuilding of

honest and pitched perfect
for a middle-grade readership. [Waldron] gets inside Ari's
head and knows what a kid...
wants and needs.” – CanLit
for Little Canadians
“Grayson balances events
and evidence so that readers
can have it any way they will,
along with plenty of heartstopping drama on the court
as Summer’s underdog team
claws its way to a championship game despite internal
friction and a mediocre new
coach.” – Booklist
“Egan has created a unique
fantasy landscape, a chilling villain, and characters you will be
thinking about long after the
book is finished. I am already
impatient for the sequel.”
– Lena Coakley

“An excellent work of historical fiction…a great

Fourteen-year-old Andrea

this novel is the spirit of
friendship. I am hoping this

translated into every language. I also think this
would be an excellent book
