Peterborough Day Care Newsletter September 2014 Greetings Welcome to all of our new and returning families. They say that time goes quickly when you are having fun and our summer certainly disappeared fast. Even though the weather wasn’t always ideal the staff and children here at Peterborough Day Care certainly took advantage of the great outdoors this summer. The children went on excursions to the pet store, the museum, community parks and of course the SPLASH pad. We had picnics outside and enjoyed lots of seasonal fruit in our menus Our Family Appreciation BBQ on August 19th was a huge success with 73 parents and children attending! It gave me such a good feeling to see families conversing and welcoming each other into our own little day care community. Our Staff Michele Hartwick- Supervisor Irene Belsey- Asst. Supervisor -Preschool Teacher Kelly McNenly-Toddler Teacher Jenny Vreugdenhil – Preschool Teacher Carlie Allen- Toddler Teacher Karen Dow- Toddler Teacher Lindsey Hedges-Toddler Teacher Children certainly reap the benefits of a sense of belonging to their day care and the staff when they see how relaxed, happy and comfortable their parents are in the day care environment. We had so much fun that all the staff felt this should be an annual event. One of Karen’s Favorite Books It’s the Bear By Jex Alborough This is one book in a series of three. Karen read it to her own children when they were young and continues to read it to the children in her care at day care. The story uses rhyming, humor and beautiful illustrations to captivate the children and leave them wanting to read it over and over again. Rhyming is an important pre-reading skill. It teaches children to look for the sounds in words and anticipate what comes next. Young children enjoy repetition, they enjoy reading the same books over and over again. This repetition is important to their learning process and should be encouraged. So when your child asks to read the same book over and over, rest assured it’s good for them! FROM THE PLAYROOMS Cindy MacIntosh- Float Staff Amy DeVilliers –Dietary staff We have had a few small changes in our teaching groups this year. Jenny has moved from the combined preschool room to the single preschool room at the front of our building. Kelly has moved from the Toddler Room to the Preschool Room to work with Irene. Carlie, Karen and Lindsay remain in the toddler rooms. Cindy MacIntosh remains as a float staff and will be interacting with all of the children when she visits a classroom to provide that teacher with a break. Page 2 of 2 Newsletter Ashley and Jacquie who were working as contract staff with us will no longer be at the day care on a regular basis but they remain as supply staff and I am sure we will see their faces often in the up coming months as staff take their remaining vacation time. The staff will make every effort to talk with parents about their child’s day but we also realize that drop off and pick up times can be stressful and rushed for parents. While we do offer parent/teacher interviews in spring please be aware that if you would like to call or book an alternative time to speak with your child’s teacher you can do so at any time. . I never teach my pupils, I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.-Einstein . -Einstein-E From the Kitchen Amy was away for the month of August but she is back with us now providing us with healthy and nutritious meals and snacks. Thank you to Tanya Daddazio who did a fabulous job covering for Amy while she was away. Tanya will continue to be able to cover in the kitchen when Amy needs to be away as will Janis Elgeti.
