Syllabus Intensive Medical Spanish Christ Hospital College of Nursing, classroom 244 Ligia Gómez [email protected] July 6 to 31/ 2014 Time: 9 AM to 12 PM M-F Course overview: This course is part of the UC Medical Spanish Track (MST) as one of several strategies designed to address a critical need of the community: provide a body of linguistically and culturally competent physicians equipped to care for the growing number of Hispanic/Latino patients. Course objectives: Be able to give clear treatment and management instructions to patients in Spanish. Develop improved command of Spanish medical terminology. Develop improved verbal skills for communicating with Hispanic patients. Gain an understanding of Hispanic culture and health care seeking behaviors. Gain the ability to build rapport and establish trust with Spanish speaking patients. Course requirements: Complete all modules and pass all three exams of the Canopy online Medical Spanish course. Don’t miss more than 2 classes during the course. Participate in at least 3 of the 4 field experiences. Pass the written and verbal exams. Weekly schedule: Most days the classes will be divided in two general sessions: 9-10:45 AM: Grammar, Vocabulary, Systems 10:45 to 11:00 PM: Break 11:00-12:00 AM: Culture and health Week 1 (July 6 to 10) Throughout the week we will be working with: *A Su Salud Unidad 1a: Physical exam, discussing pain, developing rapport. Lead poisoning, diabetes *A Su Salud Unidad 1b: Diabetes, post-traumatic stress syndrome, immigration nutrition, *Complete Medical Spanish: Chapter 1, 2, 3, 4, 13.3 (pg 309): Conjugate -ar verbs (e.g. estar, tener) to ask about specific complaints, symptoms. Pediatrics. Emergency room. La familia, nutrition. First visit of a patient with diabetes. Monday, July 6 Introduction to the course and Greetings *Complete Medical Spanish: Chapter 1 and 2: Greetings, body parts, ask “What seems to be the problem?”, “What hurts?” Taking vital signs, discussion of chief complaints, prescription, diet, follow up instructions. Reproductive system. *Barriers to access to health care and social services Tarea: Chief complaints form, study vocabulary. Tuesday, July 7 9-10 AM Group work: Chief complaint 10 AM-12 PM SSPE (Simulated Spanish Patient Encounters). Meet at the Simulation Center (MSB E350). Tarea: A. Reflection SSPE experience. In Spanish, write a reflection about the encounter with the patient. Summarize the case and analyze your communication with the patient and any cultural observations. (Around 300 words) B.
