From the desk of the Principal........
Dear Grenadier Parents: Believe it or not, we’re preparing for the Fourth Quarter of another school year! Our already mild winter was made even nicer by an impressive run of successes in academics, athletics, and activities at Elk Grove High School. It’s a pleasure to share this news with you and to let you know about some upcoming events as well. Our Coed Cheerleading continued its run as one of the best programs in the history of IHSA Cheer, qualifying for the IHSA State Meet and finishing in 14th place overall. EGHS is one of only two programs in Illinois to have qualified for the IHSA State Meet EVERY YEAR it has been held. In Boys Swimming, Jack Faleczek again qualified for the IHSA State Meet in four events! We are ready for more excitement from our Spring Athletic Teams, with the EGHS Softball (#1) and Three-‐time defending MSL Champion Baseball (#7) Teams both highly ranked by the Daily Herald. We are truly proud to share that student participation in EG athletics is at an all-‐time high, and we are preparing for a resurgence of success in every area. Recently, the Elk Grove Athletic Department also received the “Safe Sports School” award from the National Athletic Trainers Association. This enormously prestigious honor is given to schools that demonstrate excellence in preventing and treating sports health concerns among student athletes. The recognition confirms what we already know—that our Athletic Department puts the safety and health of our students first! The Elk Grove Speech Team had another fantastic year, finishing 9th at the IHSA State Meet. Megan Manoj finished her career as the most decorated student in the history of Elk Grove High School, completing an amazingly difficult repeat as State Champion in Oratorical Declamation and finishing in 3rd place in Informative Speaking! Mary Daniels was also a State Finalist in Humorous Interpretation, and both Emily Franke and Claire Glennon qualified for the IHSA State meet after succeeding in the most difficult Sectional Meet in Illinois. Similarly, the EGHS Debate Team received 2nd place at the IHSA State Meet, with debater Michael Pauls competing at the highest level, earning All-‐State honors. Classmates Layan Safi and Ray Solorzano contributed as well, reaching the Semifinal Round at the IHSA State Meet. As usual, our Business students had an amazing spring, with Joe Weber and Markos Christoforou winning championships at the DECA State Meet. Both young men qualified for the National meet in Anaheim, California. Additionally, eight of our SkillsUSA students qualified for the state competition in the areas of Culinary Arts, Automotive Service, and Carpentry. Spring also brings with it some important academic opportunities, with the SAT exam for juniors on April 5, quickly followed by Advanced Placement Exams in early May. As always, we are confident that our students will show our community why Elk Grove High School is consistently rated as one of America’s best high schools by US News, Newsweek, and the Washington Post. Enjoy the longer days and warm sunshine! It’s coming!! Best wishes, Paul Kelly Principal EGHS Parent Newsletter

4th Quarter - April 2017
Mis mejores deseos, Paul Kelly Principal EGHS Parent Newsletter

FROM THE DESK OF THE DEANS To Our EGHS Families -‐ As many of you know, Elk Grove High School is a place where we encourage our students to stay engaged and get involved in the many ways we have to offer. With that being said, we have noticed a recent increase in students around the building unsupervised after the conclusion of the school day. This poses some challenging issues for the security and safety of our students. Moving forward, we will need to strictly enforce our after school procedures. Unless a student is being supervised directly by one of our staff members (i.e. attending an activity, involved in a sport or being tutored) they should not be in the building after 3:45pm. Those students who stay after school for a sponsored activity are eligible to take either the 4:30pm or 6:15pm late bus. When taking this bus they must have their school ID and the proper pass. When students plan to attend a school function held in the evening, they must clear the building and not return until the time the event begins when there is appropriate supervision from our staff members. Thank you for your cooperation with our efforts to keep our building safe and appropriately supervised at all times. Elk Grove High School is, and will continue to be, a place for welcoming all students who want to stay connected. CONGRATULATIONS…… To Our DECA Students (Submitted by Chad Froeschle) DECA is a co-‐curricular, student-‐centered business organization specifically designed to provide activities that will motivate students to learn marketing competencies that will prepare them to become skilled, employable workers in marketing, management, and entrepreneurship, and marketing related careers. Students involved in DECA have the opportunity to showcase their business knowledge through DECA's competitive events. There are 4 levels of competition for DECA (local, regional, state, and international). D214 PARENT NEWS D214 Superintendent Honored at AASA’s National Conference on Education: David R. Schuler, superintendent of High School District 214, has received a Distinguished Service Award from AASA, The School Superintendents Association, for his outstanding contributions to public education. The presentation was held at AASA’s National Conference on Education, where nearly 3,000 superintendents and other school district leaders gathered in March to discuss the most critical issues in education. Schuler is the immediate past president of AASA and was one of four veteran educators recognized by AASA for bringing honor to themselves, their colleagues and their profession; rendering exemplary service to their state or national professional association; and contributing to the education field through writing, public advocacy or other activities. “This recognition is truly an honor because there are so many individuals throughout our country who are making a positive difference in public education today,” said Schuler. “AASA serves as America’s top voice as far as school district leadership is concerned, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with superintendents nationwide to move AASA’s mission forward.” Schuler is passionate about preparing students to be college, career and life ready. Last year, he launched Redefining Ready!, a national campaign that introduces multiple research-‐based metrics to demonstrate post-‐secondary readiness. “For too long, the public education system has relied on standardized test scores as the primary indicator for college and career readiness,” said Schuler at the time of the launch. “Our students are more than a score.” National Redefining Ready! Scholarship Contest Open to High School Seniors: District 214 seniors are encouraged to apply for a national Redefining Ready! scholarship that asks them to tell the world why they are college, career and life ready through a 30-‐second social media video. The contest is sponsored by Hobsons, the company behind Naviance, and AASA, The School Superintendents Association, which will provide 15 scholarships nationwide. The scholarship is part of a national initiative, developed in part by District 214, to introduce new indicators of college and career readiness that go beyond standardized test scores. The Redefining Ready! Campaign has put forth research-‐based metrics to more appropriately assess whether students are prepared for success in college, career and life. Those metrics include participation in Advanced Placement courses, completion of Algebra II, early college credits, industry credentials, attendance, and community service. “Test scores only tell part of a student’s story. Research indicates that there are many more dynamic experiences that demonstrate a student’s ability to succeed beyond high school,” said Stephen M. Smith, President and Chief Product Officer at Hobsons. “We’re looking forward to shining a spotlight on the meaningful ways students are preparing for college and careers, and to hearing directly from students what readiness looks like.” Application details and deadlines can be found at www.redefiningready.org. District 214 piloted the scholarship program through its Education Foundation last spring, and the Foundation continues to fund a local version of the program, awarding funding to District 214 students who explain in a video how District 214 prepared them for college and careers. Students who competed in District 214’s competition can use their same videos for the national competition. EGHS Parent Newsletter

D214 PARENT INFORMATION ASBESTOS HAZARD EMERGENCY RESPONSE ACT: In accordance with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) and the Illinois Asbestos Abatement Act (105 ILCS 105/), you are being notified that all District 214 facilities contain various amounts and types of asbestos-‐containing building materials (ACBM). These materials do not pose any hazard to individuals unless the materials are disturbed. The District maintains compliance with all applicable governmental and regulatory asbestos rules and regulations. The District also maintains compliance with the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) guidelines for operations and maintenance activities. The District routinely performs operations and maintenance activities, required inspections, and surveillance activities to verify that the materials are being managed according to IDPH and CCDPH guidelines. The Building and Grounds Department of each individual facility and the District Operations Department have on file copies of the AHERA Management Plans that describe the locations of all ACBM. These Plans are available for inspection during regular business hours. Contact the Director of Operations for more information at (847) 718-‐7619. PESTICIDE APPLICATION NOTIFICATION REGISTRY: All District 214 facilities practice Integrated Pest Management to minimize the use of any pesticides on school grounds. The Structural Pest Control Act (225 ILCS 235/) and the Lawn Care Products Application and Notice Act (415 ILCS 65/) requires public schools to notify parents/guardians and school employees at least 48 hours (two business days) prior to any pesticide applications on school grounds. The term “pesticide” includes insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides and fungicides. The notification requirement extends to both indoor and outdoor pesticide applications. Excluded from the notification requirement are antimicrobials such as disinfectants, sanitizers or deodorizers, insecticide baits and rodenticide baits. EGHS Parent Newsletter

outdoor pesticide applications.
Excluded from the notification requirement are
antimicrobial agents (such as disinfectants, sanitizers, or deodorizers), insecticide baits,
and rodenticide baits.
Elk Grove High School has therefore established a registry of people who wish to be
notified. To be included in this registry for school year 2017-2018, please complete the
form below and submit it to the Buildings and Grounds Supervisor at your school. Any
other questions you may have regarding the District’s pest management practices may

The first dose shall have been received on or after the 10th birthday, and the second dose shall be at least eight weeks after the first dose. If the first dose is administered when the child is 16 years of age or older, only one dose is required. The requirements of this Section also apply to children who transfer into Illinois schools from other states, regardless of the age or grade level at which the child transfers. What does this mean to you and your student? Your student may have already received the two doses of the meningococcal conjugate vaccine but it has not been specified on their immunization form. Please ask your doctor if your student has received the two meningococcal conjugate vaccine and have them provide the dates they were given and a doctor’s signature. If they have not received both doses, you are required to get this vaccination for your child. Your child will be subject to exclusion as described in the school code of Illinois. Please see attached letter from the Illinois Department of Public Health. Please complete by June 1, 2017 or contact the School Nurse if unable to complete by that date. Electronic Bullying Teens are quick to learn technology, which has its benefits and pitfalls. One of those pitfalls is “Cyber Bullying.” According to the CDC, most youth (65-‐91%) report little or no involvement in electronic aggression, however, 9% to 35% of young people say they have been the victims of electronic aggression. Electronic technology allows adolescents to hide their identity, either by sending or posting messages anonymously, by using a false name, or by assuming someone else’s on-‐screen identity. So, unlike the aggression or bullying that occurs in the schoolyard, victims and perpetrators of electronic aggression may not know the person with whom they are interacting. This makes it difficult to determine the perpetrator. Electronic bullying leads to more than just hurt feelings. The information we do have suggests that, as with young people who experience face-‐to-‐face aggression, those who are victims of electronic aggression are more likely to have some difficulties than those who are not victimized. Young people who are victims of internet harassment are significantly more likely than those who have not been victimized to use alcohol and other drugs, receive school detention or suspension, skip school, or experience in-‐person victimization. Considerations for Parents/Caregivers Young people spend a good portion of their day in school, but the most influential people in their lives are their caregivers; peers are a very close second, but caregivers are still first. 1. Talk to your child. One of the expert panelists insightfully described the challenge facing adults who are trying to communicate with young people about technology: “The problem is that adults view the Internet as a mechanism to find information. Young people view the Internet as a place. Caregivers are encouraged to ask their children where they are going and who they are going with whenever they leave the house. They should take the same approach when their child goes on the Internet —where are they going and who are they with?” Young people are sometimes reluctant to disclose victimization for fear of having their Internet and cellular phone privileges revoked. Parents/caregivers should talk with their teens to come up with a solution to prevent or address victimization that does not punish the teen for his or her victimization. 2. Develop rules. Together with your child, develop rules about acceptable and safe behavior for all the electronic media they use and what they should do if they become a victim of electronic aggression or they witness or know about another teen being victimized. 3. Explore the Internet. Once you have talked to your child and discovered which websites he/she frequents, visit them yourself. This will help you under stand where your child has “been” when he/she visits the website and will help you understand the pros and cons of the various websites. Remember that most websites and on-‐line activities are beneficial. They help young people learn new information, interact with and learn about people from diverse backgrounds, and express themselves to others who may have similar thoughts and experiences. Technology is not going away, so forbidding young people to access electronic media may not be a good long-‐term solution. Together, parents and youth can come up with ways to maximize the benefits of technology and decrease its risks. 4. Talk with other parents/caregivers. Talk to others about how they have discussed technology use with their teens, the rules they have developed, and how they stay informed about their child’s technology use. Others can comment on strategies they used effectively and those that did not work very well. 5. Encourage your school or school district to conduct a class for caregivers about electronic aggression. The class should include a review of school or district policies on the topic, recent incidents in the community, and resources available to caregivers who have concerns. 6. Keep current. Technology changes rapidly, and so it is important to keep current on what new devices and features your child is using, and in what ways. Many developers of new products offer information and classes to keep people aware of advances. Additionally, existing internet websites change, and new inter net websites develop all the time, so continually talk with your teen about “where they are going” and explore these websites yourself. Your adolescent may also be an important resource for information, and having your teen educate you may help strengthen parent-‐child communication and bonding, which is important for other adolescent health issues as well. Teens and Alcohol, What Parents Need to Know Alcohol is the number one drug of choice for teens, but it is also extremely dangerous. For instance, teens that drink are more likely to have a car crash, get into a fight, have unsafe sex, or experience problems in school. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among youth ages 15 to 20. Alcohol also interacts with conditions such as depression and stress to contribute to suicide, the third leading cause of death among people between the ages of 14 and 25. Adolescence is a transition time when the body is undergoing many significant changes, such as hormonal alterations and brain development. Exposing the brain to alcohol during this period may interrupt key processes of brain development. According to research by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, adolescents who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking at age 21. The problem of youth substance abuse is often blamed on their inability to “just say no.” The reality is young people constantly get mixed messages from adults and communities. Adults, especially parents must model responsible behavior. Much of what teens do is a result of your actions and your relationship with them. Here are some tips you can use to send clear and consistent messages to your teen about alcohol use: 1. Talk to your teen and listen to what they have to say. Tell them it is against your rules for them to drink and alcohol is not a rite of passage. Alcohol use affects health. When abused, it can damage every body organ. It also affects the brain and self-‐control. It is also illegal for anyone under 21 to use or possess alcohol. 2. Lock up and monitor your alcohol at home. 3. Do not allow your teen to have a party that involves alcohol. Be at home when they have a party and make sure alcohol is not brought into the home. 4. Know whom they are spending time with. Going to parties without adult supervision is usually not a good idea. Call the adult where the party is to be held to check that they will be there and alcohol is not being served. 5. If you have caller ID, have your teen call you from the house phone when they say they are at someone’s house. On a cell phone they could be anywhere. 6. Sleepovers are probably not a good idea. It is a perfect party cover-‐up. 7. Create enjoyable alcohol-‐free opportunities and activities in your home so teens will feel welcome. Since underage drinking is against the law, if your teen gets caught here are some of the consequences you and they may face: • You can face a maximum sentence of up to one year in jail and/or a minimum fine of $500 up to $1,000 under Illinois law. • If you serve alcohol to minors you can fined and if there is a death as a result of the alcohol you can be charged with a felony and serve jail time. • Others may be able to sue you if you give alcohol to anyone under 21 and they, in turn, hurt someone, hurt themselves or damage property. • Names and addresses of those charged with permitting underage drinking in their homes may be published in Chicago and national newspapers. Your responsibility as a parent or legal guardian is to provide limits to ensure the health and safety of your teen. What a year it has been for the Marching Grenadiers!! It all began with our trip to lead the National 4th of July Parade in Washington, DC. Then after our annual kick-‐off BBQ, it was on to Marching Season. After placing 3rd at the Chicagoland Marching Festival and 4th at the Illinois Marching Band Championships. Our annual Fall Festival was a great success, and our Holiday Concert was amazing! As we prepare to say goodbye to our 2017 Seniors, EGIMA would also like to thank our departing Senior Parents who have served as Board Members and Committee Chairs. Thank you to: Debra Paris, Annette O’Brien, Kathy Rogers. Also, many thanks to our Pit Crew, Cauldron Crew, and everyone who gave their time, talent and efforts throughout the year at all of our events. Your support of our organization is greatly appreciated. GAB INFO
Happy Spring! Thanks to everyone who came out for the Gren’s Gala on March 10th. It was a great evening with dancing, good food & drinks, and some amazing raffle prizes. This evening is one of GAB’s major fundraisers, and it was great to see support from parents, staff, and people from the community. In the end, the real winners for the evening are the Elk Grove High School athletes who will benefit from all of the funds raised. We are continuing to sell our stadium chairs and our blanket fundraiser will start very soon. Please keep an eye out and grab a blanket for your next sporting event. It will be especially great to have at one of these blankets at those COLD spring baseball or softball games! As the year comes to a close, please consider joining the Grenadier Athletic Boosters during the registration process. Every dollar of your membership fee goes a long way in supporting the E.G.H.S Athletic Programs. We thank you for your support this year. We look forward to a great 2017-‐2018! We wish the best of luck to all of the EGHS spring athletic teams! Thank you again for your support and have a great summer! Parent Teacher Council (PTC) News So, what DOES the Parent-‐Teacher Counsel do for your student? In addition to hosting a free “Welcome Back to School” ice cream social every year, the PTC funds many different clubs, activities, and organizations that might otherwise not have the materials to function without charging a student fee or tasking your student with some type of fundraising. The PTC paid out over $10,000.00 in Mini Grant Awards this year to everything from Robotics Club to National Honor Society, from DECA to Estudiantes Unidos, and from Creative Writing Club to the Bass Fishing Club. This is just a small example from the twenty-‐three groups that came to the PTC in need of funds to further their program’s existence. Our one event, the annual Holiday Sampler Craft & Vendor Fair, held on the first Sunday each November (next one is Sunday, November 5th – mark your calendar now) makes these mini grants possible and directly benefits your student. The PTC is putting out the “Help Wanted” sign … if you have thought about getting more involved in your child’s school but didn’t know how or where – this is it! Our secretary position will have an opening next year and we are looking for enthusiastic, dedicated parents who can spare just an hour once a month to serve on the EGHS Parent-‐Teacher Council Executive Board – no experience necessary. Please contact Ray Szull if interested ([email protected]) or come join us at our next meeting on Tuesday, April 11th 2017 in the Foyer conference room at the school. Meetings begin at 7:30pm and last about an hour. Members of school administration are on hand to answer questions, and representatives from GAB, EGIMA, Choral and Orchestra Boosters are also there to share what is going on in the other EGHS parent organizations. To find more information on the PTC and our remaining monthly meeting schedule, please visit our page on the EGHS website: http://eghs.d214.org/parents/parent-‐teacher-‐council/. All paid members receive a copy of the Gren Directory and are also eligible to vote on PTC issues. Please visit our web page through the link above for a form and instructions on submitting. We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting! It takes a Nation to support our student’s success, and the PTC welcomes you to become an active part of this group and our EGHS Parent Nation! 2017 POST PROM Elk Grove High School’s Prom and Post Prom events will be held on Friday, June 2, 2017. This year’s Post Prom event will be held at Pinstripes Bowling, Bocce, Bistro in South Barrington, Illinois. Students attending the Post Prom event will depart The Belvedere on luxury coach buses at approximately 11 p.m. and arrive at Pinstripes at approximately 11:30 p.m. The Post Prom event at Pinstripes begins at 11:30 p.m. and concludes at 2:00 a.m., where the students will enjoy unlimited bowling on luxury lanes, indoor and outdoor bocce courts, DJ and Karaoke entertainment and dancing, a photo booth and access to the outdoor heated patio with fire pit. Delicious food stations will offer hot entrees, desserts and beverages throughout the evening. EGHS administration, staff members, and contracted licensed security guards will be present the entire evening to chaperone the event. Buses will depart Pinstripes at approximately 2:30 a.m. and arrive at The Belvedere at approximately 3:00 a.m. Ticket sales will be held at EGHS on Saturday, May 13th from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. for seniors only and from 10 a.m. to Noon for seniors and juniors. The cost of the Post Prom ticket is $30 per person or $60 per couple. The Post Prom Permission Form and additional ticket information will be mailed home via a separate mailing; information will also be available on the EGHS website. Please encourage your student to attend the Post Prom event at Pinstripes! We are one of two high schools remaining in District 214 that continue to host a Post Prom event. We believe a substance-‐free, well-‐chaperoned event is a better alternative to unchaperoned celebrations in small groups, where, too often, illegal substances and alcohol are available. Financial Update Thank you to all our families that have supported our fundraisers! However, the ongoing need of financial support is critical to the success of this event. To keep the price affordable for all students, we strive to substantially reduce the total cost per ticket by approximately 50 percent. Our fundraising efforts and financial donations from our families and community businesses help to defer the cost. This is where we need your help. We are asking all of our EGHS families to please consider a donation to Post Prom. Whether your child will be attending Post Prom this year or next, by donating to this year’s Post Prom activity, you are ensuring the future success of this important event. Please return the enclosed Post Prom Donation Form with your cash or check donation. Thank you for your support! EGHS Parent Newsletter
