Act 48:
Description:
Academic acceleration is a controversial educational intervention that creates anxiety
among parents, teachers, and administrators. Often, the anxiety stems from
uncertainty about appropriate implementation and concerns about the outcomes of
acceleration. Proper use of test data can help with implementation, and research
provides reassuring information about the outcomes of acceleration. This session will
review research findings about acceleration and provide practice in decision-making
regarding its use.
Gender differences can affect students in a variety of ways, some of which are common
to all children and some of which are more common in gifted individuals. Potential
differences can be seen in the areas of academic achievement, academic/career
interests, social interactions, and self-concept. It is not always clear whether these
differences are mostly "nature" or mostly "nurture," but we do know that girls face
barriers in the study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). A
variety of family and school interventions can minimize the harmful effects of gender
stereotypes and biases, both in STEM fields and in general.
Learner Outcomes:
Participants will:
• Discover proper use of test data to assist with implementation of academic
acceleration.
• Understand the potential gender differences when it comes to areas of
academic achievements, interests, social interactions, and self-concept.
• Learn interventions to minimize the harmful effects of gender stereotypes.
