The Non-Profit Difference
Ecumen Pathstone Living is proud to be a Non-Profit Senior Living Provider in the
Mankato community. This is one of the many qualities that makes us unique and a
top choice for seniors to receive services. Here are some facts that make us a successful non-profit business:
 No one owns a non-profit organization in the way that shareholders own a forprofit corporation.
 Ecumen is overseen by a board of trustees whose members volunteer their time
and talent to ensure quality services and management. Board members are
committed to making sure we remain true to our mission, vision and values.
 Because Ecumen is overseen by a board of trustees, our leadership may have
more autonomy to make decisions that are in the best interest of the residents .
 Growth for non-profit organizations is the ability to extend our services to meet
the needs of the community while staying true to our mission and remaining
financially sound.
 At the heart of high-quality, long-term care is the creation of lasting relationships. Ecumen has been serving local communities for decades with stability
that gives both residents and their loved
ones lasting peace of mind.
 As part of our Non-Profit mission, Ecumen
recognizes that staff satisfaction and commitment are related to sufficient numbers
of staff, fair wages and benefits, work flexibility when needed, continuing education/
growth opportunities and an environment
of respect.

Shelly Cornish Named Campus Director at
Ecumen Pathstone Living
Shelly Cornish has been promoted to Campus Director at Ecumen Pathstone Living.
Shelly has been at Pathstone for eight years and with Ecumen for more than 11 years.
She started her career as Operations Director at Ecumen Oaks and Pines in Hutchinson in
2005, became Housing Manager at Ecumen Le Center in 2007 and joined Ecumen Pathstone Living as Housing Director in 2008. Along with her current role
managing housing at Pathstone, she will take on additional operational responsibilities.
“We are so pleased to recognize Shelly’s outstanding contributions
to Pathstone with this promotion,” said Jennifer Pfeffer, Regional
Executive Director of Operations.
Shelly is a graduate of Minnesota State University-Mankato with a
Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work and a Master of Science in
Gerontology and is a licensed nursing home administrator. Shelly is
also a graduate of the Greater Mankato Growth Leadership Institute and Ecumen’s Velocity Leadership program.
Welcome
Laura Templin!
I am so happy to be here at Ecumen Pathstone Living in my new role, Community Relations Manager.
I started my Ecumen career in 2007 when I started
working for Pathstone as Admissions Coordinator.
In 2012 I left Ecumen Pathstone Living to become
an Ecumen Housing Manager.
I have always loved working with the senior population. My first work experience was as Nursing Assistant in my home town nursing home. While
attending college I worked as a Lead Care Manager
for a Memory Care community. I graduated from
Minnesota State University in 2005 with a Bachelor
of Science degree in Mass Communications-Public
Relations/Marketing.
I have two daughters that keep me plenty busy.
When I am not working I enjoy the outdoors, taking
my girls to the pool or the park and spending time
with my family.
I am so happy to be back. Pathstone is truly a
wonderful place to work. I am looking forward to
reconnecting with my past co-workers as well as
meeting new ones . I also look forward to working
with the “Friends of Pathstone” and donors in my
new role.

Ecumen Pathstone Living Recognizes their Kiwanis Aktion
Club Volunteers of the Year
When faced with the decision to pick a winner, it is often difficult to choose just one. The members
of Ecumen Pathstone Living’s Kiwanis Aktion Club recently celebrated three members who were appointed “Volunteer of the Year.”
Jo Esslinger—Jo has been a dedicated volunteer for the Backpack Food Program. She joyfully assists on Tuesdays when our volunteer groups insert menus and newsletters into bags. Jo has a positive outlook and is a welcome presence in the group. She assists with our twice-yearly food packing
session.
Marvel Wieman—Marvel has been an incredibly active member of the Aktion Club. Every Monday,
Marvel assists with the Backpack Food Program. She is faithful in her attendance on Mondays in
making sure that inserts get into the bags, Marvel’s positive, upbeat attitude make the volunteer
work fun and energizing. Every time there is a volunteer opportunity Marvel is there to help.
Phyllis Mullin— Phyllis is an active participant in the Aktion Club here at Pathstone. Phyllis participates in the Tuesday volunteer activity for the Backpack Food Program. She faithfully assists with
preparing welcome bags. We would like to thank all three of this year’s winners for their hard work!

Ecumen Scholars Fellowship Graduates its 2016 Class
Ten nursing students recently graduated from the Ecumen Scholars Fellowship Program. Ecumen started the program in 2014 in partnership with Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) with a $1.9 million grant from the
Margaret A. Cargill Foundation. The fellowship program is part of a larger initiative designed to attract and recruit nurses to senior care jobs in rapidly aging rural Minnesota.
In addition to offering clinical rotations, internships and leadership fellowships to nursing students as they train, the program also offers financial incentives to student nurses who later take jobs at Ecumen communities. This was the second
year the program has been offered. The three-week fellowship program started June 6, and a graduation ceremony was
held June 24 following a session with Minnesota Senator Kathy Sheran, a former nurse and nursing professor. Sen.
Sharan, who said her nursing background was instrumental in her Senate accomplishments, encouraged the students to
take every opportunity to become involved and advocate for quality
healthcare and give a voice to their patients. Nurses can influence
change, she said, by using their experience and knowledge to impact
healthcare issues.
The ten students were exposed to all aspects of senior care including
direct patient interaction, nutrition, therapy, home care, hospice,
long-term and short-term care, adult day care and assisted living and
memory care. The program was conducted primarily at Ecumen
Pathstone Living.

Kathryn Roberts.
Employee Appreciation Week
The staff of Ecumen Pathstone Living celebrated Employee Appreciation week in May. The month of May is
recognized as Caregiver Appreciation Month. This May’s event was sponsored by the family of Jack Heimark
as a “Thank you” for the outstanding care that Jack received during his time at Pathstone Crossing. Every day
was a different appreciation event. The events included special meals such as a Taco Bar & Pasta Bar, Culver’s
ice-cream sundaes, daily gift card drawings and massages. The week ended with “Caregiver Blessings” in the
chapel with Pastor Tim Hinrichs.
