Panther Parents/Guardians and Students!
Greetings Panthers! We are in the middle of summer but the school year is just around the
corner. The entire staff is excited to see you again and wants to welcome you back to the
world’s greatest high school! We have a laser like focus on meeting the needs of all our
students, providing a top rate education and a wonderful high school experience. Every
student matters to us and we are committed to making sure all students feel welcome,
supported, cared about and challenged. We will continue to teach and reinforce our Values for
Success (Panther POWER), which are the building blocks to everything we do. They are:
 Perseverance: Persistence in action even when faced with discouragement and
obstacles to accomplish your purpose. The act of not giving up, pushing through despite
your circumstances – even if you fail initially.
 Ownership: Our choices! Our school! Our future! Being accountable for my/our actions
and the results they bring at all times. Taking responsibility for your efforts, actions,
decisions and owning the positive and negative results.
 Work Ethic: Sustained internal drive to perform at your personal best. Just get it done!
Going beyond basic requirements to reach the highest quality possible. Relentlessly
pushing yourself, giving full effort, and not procrastinating until you are done.
 Engagement: Be here! All in! Have fun! Complete involvement, commitment, and
immersion with the task at hand. Brain on! Focusing on your task, participating,
creating things, sharing ideas, hands and minds are working.
 Respect: To see value, worth and appreciation in self and others even if ideas and
beliefs are different. Treat people the way you want to be treated and show regard for
the property of others. Accepting (not judging) individual difference of opinions, ideas,
physical attributes, and showing kindness because we are all equal.
There are a few changes this coming year that I want to share with you.
 Your counselor may have changed! Our counselors are no longer grade level
counselors - they are on an alpha system. Students’ assigned counselor will be
determined by their last name. Students may talk to any of the counselors (especially if
they have a preexisting relationship) about social emotional issues. All academic
tracking, scheduling, and advising will be through their assigned alpha counselor.

 Chromebooks!!! This year the district is providing every secondary student with a
Chromebook for instructional purposes to use at school and home. Like a textbook, the
device will be checked out to students at the beginning of the school year. Students will

be given an orientation on the device and expectations for use at school and at
home. For more information go to the district website at sumnersd.org
 We have updated our Advisory curriculum, using a very progressive and interactive
electronic program called Career Cruising. Your students will all have accounts that they
can explore and share with you. They will be keeping electronic portfolios rather than
the binders we have been doing. This is a very positive step in helping students to
determine the direction they want to go after high school and how to plan for it!
 Electronic communication… We want 95% of our communication home to be
electronic. Please make sure your email address is correct in our system so you receive
the communications we send out! Letters we send out will also be available on the
BLHS home page.
I also want to highlight a few things that have the potential to significantly impact your
student’s education:
 Student attendance is crucial to school success. Students who miss 10% (or more) of
school are at high risk of failing courses and research has shown they have significantly
decreased chance of graduating. Please help your students by getting them to school
every day!
 Students who are taking Advance Placement courses – if you have summer homework,
make sure you complete it and come prepared. These courses are rigorous and are
supposed to be hard! They will challenge you, but you can and will be successful. Be
conscientious of how you schedule your time, so you do not overbook yourself.
Remember, if you complete 5 AP courses, you become an AP Scholar and will be
recognized at graduation.
 We will have an Activity Bus every week – Monday through Thursday – so students can
take advantage of after school programs. It will leave BLHS around 4:15pm. We have
expanded our after school support to include an Academic Support/Assessment Center
where students can go for additional instruction, a place to study, or to make up tests.
If your student is failing Math or English, there may be times where he/she is required
to attend until grades are improved. The Academic Support/Assessment center will be
staffed by teachers who are excited to help any student with any subject.
 We have courses offered during 7th period (after school) for students who need options
& flexibility (contact your student’s counselor to learn more) - Robotics is offered 1st
semester and PE will be offered all year. 7th period will run from 2:30 – 4:00 Monday
through Thursday – no 7th period on Fridays or staff meeting Wednesdays.
 Two fantastic ways to keep up on what is happening here at BLHS is to “like” us on
Facebook (Bonney Lake High School) or through our student run webpage,

Also, our first football game (Sunset Bowl) is on September 2nd – the Friday before school
begins. Students, remember to purchase your ASB card so you can get in free! It is a white-out
so come wearing white!
It is my goal to see each and every student graduate – 100% graduation! Not only do I want to
see every student graduate, we want to make sure they have the necessary skills to be
successful in their post-secondary choice. Bonney Lake High School is here to do exactly that!
Please do not hesitate to contact your student’s teachers, counselor, or administrator if you
have questions or are in need of any assistance.

First Day of School – Special Schedule
To help welcome and orient freshman to high school we have a special schedule. Freshman will
arrive at the regular starting time (7:25am) for one half day; regular lunch will be served. Our
goal is to get our freshmen engaged, get a chance to connect with their peers and our Crue –
upper-class student leaders) who will help lead the morning. They will also become familiarized
with the building, with their class locations, and with procedures before the arrival of the upper
classmen. All sophomores, juniors and seniors will begin after lunch at 12:25pm (no lunch will
be served) with orientation activities which are appropriate for them. Transportation will be
provided on a special schedule for grades 10, 11, and 12. All grades will receive their class
schedules during Advisory the first day and will remain at school until the normal end of the
school day at 2:20pm.

I continue to be honored and excited to be the principal of BLHS, the World’s
Greatest High School! BLHS has outstanding students and is blessed to have
such supportive parents and community. I am looking forward to continuing to
partner with all stakeholders (especially students and parents) to help BLHS be the premiere
high school in the state of Washington! It is my job to help guide the staff in supporting each
and every student learn essential content and skills to earn a diploma and become career and
college ready. We (educators) have a moral imperative to ensure that every student is
successful.
I am entering my 20th year as an educator and my third year here at BLHS. I have a strong
background in improving classroom instruction, creating support systems to help students
achieve, and ensuring no student falls through the cracks. I LOVE the Seahawks, take every
opportunity I can to go fishing, and spending time with my family.
I am very family oriented and am the proud father of three kids ages 17, 15, and 13. As a father
I want only the best for my children and seek that every day. I believe that every parent feels
exactly the same. This is a thought that is always on my mind and helps to guide the decisions I
make every day. My door is always open. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have a
concern about your student(s). I am looking forward to serving this community!

I am excited to be starting my first year as a Panther at Bonney Lake High School and
in the Sumner School District. I have been in education for 16 years, 13 in the classroom as a Special
Education teacher and the last 3 as a part of the administrative team in the Tahoma School District.
As one of the three assistant principals at BLHS, I will oversee the 10 th grade students, along with the
departments of Special Education, World Languages, Physical Education, and Fine Arts. I strongly
believe that through connections and relationships with students, we can help each student achieve
their goals for their future while supporting teachers to meet the high standards of today! I am
married with 2 boys (9 years old and 6 years old) who continue to shape me as a leader and drive
me to make school a better place for every student so that each person can see themselves as
successful in whatever direction of life they choose to take. I sincerely look forward to this coming
school year and getting to know the Bonney Lake community. Feel free to reach out to me at any

As an original staff member of the World’s Greatest High School, I am honored
to have to opportunity serve Bonney Lake as an assistant principal. Through our
halls walk the world’s greatest students, educators, and families. Every year I am increasingly
humbled to be working with our students and families. I began my tenure with the Panthers as
a Social Studies teacher and as the head wrestling coach. Prior to my time at BLHS, I was an
educator in the San Francisco Bay Area. My wife, daughter, and I love living in the Pacific
North-West and in our Bonney Lake community.
This year, I will be working closely with our eleventh and twelfth grade students, student
leadership, and with our ASB clubs and activities. Additionally, I will be coordinating our state
testing efforts and our alternatives to discipline programs.
Bonney Lake High School is the best kept secret in Puget Sound. I am excited to be a part of the

This will be your child’s Year of the Panther! Everyone at BLHS is prepared to
make certain our students enjoy leadership opportunities combined with supported academic
challenges. Although I am “new” to BLHS, I feel like it is homecoming. I have served as an
administrator at all three middle schools along with extensive work at our district’s eight
elementary schools. Professional recognitions include Principal of the Year, National Board for
Professional Principal Standards, six years on the Association of Washington School Principals
Board of Directors, and two years with the Washington state Administrative Professional
Certification Panel. I promise to support your child with a blend of district, state, and national
professional experience. On a personal level, my wife of 37 years and I are living a parents’
dream – our sons have completed college, have excellent jobs, and are happily married! You
will see me everywhere supporting Panther Power and, of course, your son or daughter.
