Welcome
On behalf of Asthma UK, I’m delighted to welcome you to our tenth annual carol
service, in the presence of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester, to raise
vital funds to support the charity’s work.
As we gather for the forthcoming festivities with our nearest and dearest, I can’t help
but think of the three families whose lives are devastated by the loss of a loved one
every day across the UK, particularly those who have to live with the knowledge that
many of these deaths could have been prevented with basic routine care. More than
a thousand families will have an empty seat at their table this Christmas and Asthma
UK is dedicated to stopping this happening to more.
We’re both the leading charity funder of asthma research in the UK and the only
charity providing world class support and advice to the 1 in every 11 people who
have asthma in the UK. Our vision is to stop asthma attacks and, ultimately, cure
asthma. Events such as tonight’s carol service are vital in helping us achieve this.
I’m thrilled to see so many of our loyal supporters as well as new faces here tonight
and want to thank you all very much for your goodwill and generosity. I’d particularly
like to take this opportunity to thank the organising Committee; Judy Chilton, Sarah
Habib, Sophie Meek and Sarah Wilkinson, as without their generous support, time
and enthusiasm the carol service would not be possible.
We’re also very grateful to our royal patron, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of
Gloucester, for attending this evening. Special thanks also go to our readers, Julian
Fellowes, Patricia Hodge, Kirsten O’Brien and Zoë Wanamaker, solo singer Margaret
Keys and to Jeremy Walker and the Boys’ Choir of Westminster Under School for
giving up their time to make this evening so special. Finally we are most grateful
to our sponsor KX for their generous support and all the companies who have
contributed to the success of the event by purchasing an advert in this programme.
Wishing you a wonderful evening and a happy Christmas,
Kay Boycott
Chief Executive, Asthma UK

Order of service
Once in Royal David’s City
(remain seated)
Solo treble
Once in Royal David’s city
Stood a lowly cattle shed,
Where a mother laid her Baby
In a manger for His bed;
Mary was that mother mild,
Jesus Christ her little Child.
(stand)
All
He came down to earth from
heaven,
Who is God and Lord of all,
And His shelter was a stable,
And His cradle was a stall;
With the poor, and mean, and
lowly,
Lived on earth our Saviour holy.
And through all His wondrous
childhood
He would honour and obey,
Love, and watch the lowly
maiden,
in whose gentle arms He lay;
Christian children all must be
Mild, obedient, good as He.
For he is our childhood’s pattern
Day by day, like us He grew;
He was little, weak and helpless,
Tears and smiles like us He
knew;
And He feeleth for our sadness,
And He shareth in our gladness.
Choir
And our eyes at last shall see
Him,
Through His own redeeming
love;
For that child so dear and gentle
Is our Lord in heaven above,
And He leads His children on
To the place where He is gone.
Twas the Night before Christmas
Not in that poor lowly stable,
With the oxen standing by,
We shall see Him; but in heaven,
Set at God’s right hand on high;
Where like stars His children
crowned,
All in white shall wait around.

O Little Town of Bethlehem
(stand)
All
O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless
sleep
The silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting light;
The hopes and fears of all the
years
Are met in thee tonight.
O morning stars, together
Proclaim the holy birth,
And praises sing to God the
king,
And peace to men on earth;
For Christ is born of Mary;
And, gathered all above,
While mortals sleep, the angels
keep
Their watch of wond’ring love.
Choir only
How silently, how silently,
The wondrous gift is giv’n!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of His heav’n.
No ear may hear His coming;
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive
Him, still,
The dear Christ enters in.
All
While Shepherds Watched
O holy Child of Bethlehem,
Descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin and enter in,
Be born to us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell:
O come to us, abide with us,
Our Lord Emmanuel.

“Glad tidings of great joy I

forthwith

First Property
Group plc
At First Property we believe in investing in high yielding commercial investment property. When
property values fall, yields increase and we consider buying. When property values rise, yields
reduce and we consider selling. We did not foresee the credit crunch but adhering to the above
philosophy kept our and our capital safe.
We invested in properties well before the peak of the boom in 2007 and largely exited the UK
market at its peak.
We are now back in the market.

A message from St Luke’s Church
Welcome to St Luke’s, Chelsea to sing carols, celebrate the Christmas story and
support the invaluable work of Asthma UK.
In an age when the vehicles of social media enable us to contact each other
anywhere and at any time, it is extraordinarily powerful that people, like you, still
wish to come together on a dark, cold night to celebrate this enduring mystery
of Christmas. Of course, even 2000 years ago in Palestine the birth of Jesus
drew people together in strange combinations - a pregnant teenager, shepherds,
innkeepers, magi and the downright curious. And so it remains. Responding to this
human image of God has, through the centuries, inspired men, women and children
to act with generosity and compassion, some in faith and others out of human
solidarity. Your being here, through your prayers, your work, your commitment in
energy and financial resource, enables truly inspirational work to go on, work which
mirrors the generosity of God in the gift of the baby of Bethlehem.
That too was a gift which was given, as the gospel story reminds us, at night
amongst vulnerable people, limited resources and an uncertain future, but a gift
which transformed lives. I trust that your presence in the darkness of this evening,
will enlighten both you and the recipients of your generosity to see and live in the
light of a fuller humanity. Indeed, may your Christmas celebrations tonight, and
when the feast of Christmas arrives, fill you and your families and friends, as well
as the work of Asthma UK with a sense of the enduring love which God has for all
humanity, all the brothers and sisters of that baby at Bethlehem.
You are, of course, very welcome at any of our services in this parish at Christmas
and beyond. If the clergy can be of assistance to you please do not hesitate to
contact us – www.chelseaparish.org – 020 7351 7365.
