New coins have been produced annually since then and they now include pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, fifty cent pieces, and silver dollars. Here are some fun facts about coins. • Thomas Jefferson liked to count by tens. The third President of the United States and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence was the first person to back the use of the decimal money system that we use today. He is honored on the current US nickel. • Nickels, dimes and quarters are pickled before they are minted. It might sound strange, but the blanks used to make these coins are really pickled. They are not soaked in vinegar though as the pickled cucumbers you get on burgers are. Instead, these copper-nickel blanks are soaked in a special chemical solution. This “pickling” washes and polishes the blanks. • When it’s time for change. The Secretary of the Treasury may change coinage designs after 25 years. Congress however, can authorize a change at any time if one is needed sooner. • You can hold a Ferris Wheel in the palm of your hand. How? It’s easier than you may think. The word Ferris Wheels is a nickname for the Silver Dollar. Who is on your money? Match each denomination with the correct name.
