Christmas at Luther 2010 Gloria in Excelsis Deo A Message from the President Gloria in Excelsis Deo It is a pleasure to welcome you to Christmas at Luther, indeed a time that Luther College gives Glory to God in the Highest! Since our founding in 1861, music making has played a fundamental role in a Luther education. Music is central to our rigorous liberal arts curriculum, and it is transformative in the lives of our students and in the lives of listeners. My hope for these students is that they realize what a tremendous gift it is to be able to create beauty and help connect the Luther College community to its treasured faith heritage. Gloria in Excelsis Deo were the words the angels sang when the birth of Christ was announced to shepherds. How fortunate that over 600 students announce that same message of joy to us today. May their music stir and inspire you anew with the glorious news of Jesus’s birth. Richard L. Torgerson, Ph.D. President Christmas at Luther 2010 Gloria in Excelsis Deo Thursday, December 2, 5:45 p.m. Friday, December 3, 6:30 and 9:15 p.m. Saturday, December 4, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, December 5, 2:30 p.m. Center for Faith and Life Luther College, Decorah, Iowa Luther College will be taping all performances. We ask that all cell phones, pagers, and digital wristwatch alarms be turned off. No audio- or video-recording devices or cameras are permitted. If for any reason you need assistance during the performance, please find an usher (located near each entrance). We request that the audience hold its applause until the completion of the concert. And the babe, the world’s redeemer, first revealed his sacred face, evermore and evermore. O ye heights of heav’n adore him, Angel hosts his praises sing, Pow’rs, dominions bow before him, And extol our God and King. Let no tongue on earth be silent, ev’ry voice in concert ring evermore and evermore. (Sung in Zulu) Nation, do not cry Jehovah will protect us. We will attain freedom Jehovah will protect us. Angels’ Carol John Rutter Text: John Rutter Aurora, Cantorei, Symphony Orchestra Have you heard the sound of the angel voices Ringing out so sweetly, ringing out so clear? Have you seen the star shining out so brightly As a sign from God that Christ the Lord is here? Have you heard the news that they bring from heaven Program To the humble shepherds who have waited long? Gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels sing their joyful song. Sanctus (from Messe en Sol Majeur) Francis Poulenc (1899–1963) Nordic Choir (Sung in Latin) He is come in peace in the winter’s stillness, Like a gentle snowfall in the gentle night; He is come in joy like the sun at morning Filling all the world with radiance and with light. He is come in love as a child of Mary; In a simple stable we have seen his birth: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels singing “Peace on earth.” Henry Smart (1813–1879), arr. Mark Patterson, orch. Brooke Joyce Text: James Montgomery (1771– 1854) Audience is invited to stand and sing. He will bring new light to a world of darkness, Like a bright star shining in the skies above; He will bring new hope to the waiting nations When he comes to reign in purity and love. Come and worship, come and worship Worship Christ the newborn king Shepherds, in the fields abiding Watching o’er your flocks by night, God with us is now residing, Yonder shines the infant light. Come and worship, come and worship Worship Christ the newborn King! Saints, before the altar bending, Watching long in hope and fear, Suddenly the Lord, descending, In his temple shall appear. Come and worship, come and worship Worship Christ, the newborn King! I believe this is Jesus, come and see. The light of God shines in his face, come and see. He offers all his pardoning grace, come and see. 3 Program There Shall a Star From Jacob Come Forth (from Christus, Opus 97 ) Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847) Text: Numbers 24:17, Psalm 2:9, Philipp Nicolai (1556–1608); trans. How lovely shines the morning star! O, what a radiance from afar that gives us light and comfort. Thy word, Jesus, shows us clearly truth sincerely, life bestowing. Praise, o praise such love o’erflowing! Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel shall come to thee O Israel. O come, desire of nations of like mind and bind in one the hearts of all mankind; bid thou our sad divisions cease, and be thyself our Prince of Peace. With joy for Jesus’ birth we sing, Alleluia. Veni, Veni Emmanuel arr. Allen Koepke Text: Psalteriolum Cantionum Catholicarum (1710); trans. John M. Polish carol, arr. Paul J. Christiansen (1914–1997) Text trans. Edith M.G. Reed Cathedral Choir Infant holy, infant lowly, for his bed a cattle stall; Oxen lowing, little knowing Christ the child is Lord of all. Swiftly winging, angels singing, bells are ringing, tidings bringing: Christ the child is Lord of all! Flocks were sleeping, shepherds keeping vigil ’til the morning new Saw the glory, heard the story, tidings of a gospel true. Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow, praises voicing, greet the morrow: “Christ the child is born for you!” Program Go Tell It on the Mountain Ring out the want, the care, the sin, The faithless coldness of the times; Ring out, ring out thy mournful rhymes, But ring the fuller minstrel in. Refrain: Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere; go tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born! Ring out false pride in place and blood, The civic slander and the spite; Ring in the love of truth and right, Ring in the common love of good. arr. Gregory Peterson Text: John W. Work Jr. (1871–1925); spiritual Audience is invited to stand and sing. While shepherds kept their watching o’er silent flocks by night, behold, throughout the heavens there shone a holy light. (Refrain) The shepherds feared and trembled when lo, above the earth rang out the angel chorus that hailed our Savior’s birth. (Refrain) Down in a lonely manger the humble Christ was born; and God sent us salvation that blessed Christmas morn. (Refrain) Ring Out, Wild Bells! Bradley Ellingboe Text: Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809– 1892) Aurora, Luther Ringers Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky, The flying cloud, the frosty light; The year is dying in the night; Ring out, wild bells, and let him die. Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow: The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true. Ring out the grief that saps the mind, For those that here we see no more, Ring out the feud of rich and poor, Ring in redress to all mankind. Ring out a slowly dying cause, And ancient forms of party strife; Ring in the nobler modes of life, With sweeter manners, purer laws. Ring out old shapes of foul disease, Ring out the narrowing lust of gold; Ring out the thousand wars of old, Ring in the thousand years of peace. Ring in the valiant man and free, The larger heart, the kindlier hand; Ring out the darkness of the land, Ring in the Christ that is to be. What Shall We Give? Catalonian carol, arr. Mack Wilberg Text trans. David Warner Collegiate Chorale What shall we give to the Babe in the manger? What shall we offer the child in the stall? Incense and spices and gold we’ve a plenty, are these the gifts for the King of us all? Tam, patan Tam, patan What shall we give to the boy in the temple? What shall we offer the man by sea? Palms at his feet and hosannas uprising, are these for him who will carry the tree? What shall we give to the lamb who was offered, rising the third day and shedding his love? Tears for his mercy we’ll weep at the manger; bathing the infant come down from above. 5 Program Wana Baraka Which we will give him; and bequeath This holly, and this ivy wreath, To do him honor; who’s our King, And Lord of all this revelling. They have blessings, those who pray; Jesus, the baby makes it so. Alleluia! They have peace They have joy They have well-being What sweeter music can we bring Than a carol, for to sing The birth of this our heavenly King. Traditional Kenyan, arr. Shawn Kirchner Norsemen (Sung in Swahili) What Sweeter Music English carol, arr. Mack Wilberg Combined choirs, Symphony Orchestra (candlelighting) What sweeter music can we bring Than a carol, for to sing The birth of this our heavenly King? Awake the voice! Awake the string! The first nowell the angel did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay, In fields where they lay keeping their sheep On a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell! Born is the King of Israel. John Rutter Text: Robert Herrick (1591–1674) Nordic Choir, Symphony Orchestra Dark and dull night fly hence away, And give the honor to this day That sees December turned to May. Why does the chilling winter’s morn Smile, like a field beset with corn? Or smell like a meadow newly shorn Thus on the sudden? Come and see The cause, why things thus fragrant be: Tis he is born, whose quickening birth Gives life and lustre, public mirth, To heaven and the underearth. We see him come, and know him ours, Who, with his sunshine and his showers, Turns all the patient ground to flowers. The darling of the world is come, And fit it is, we find a room To welcome him, to welcome him. The nobler part of all the house here, is the heart, 6 The First Nowell They looked up and saw a star Shining in the east beyond them far, And to the earth it gave great And so it continued both day and night. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell! Born is the King of Israel. Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heav’nly Lord, That hath made heav’n and earth of nought And with his blood mankind hath bought. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell! Nearly 1,000 student musicians participate in our large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons, and master classes. More than 350 students pursue the rigorous Luther music major, studying music theory, ear training, history, music education, composition, church music, and performance. It all adds up to one of the largest collegiate music programs in the world! Martin Luther—our namesake—believed music to be “one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.” For over 130 years Luther students have been sharing this marvelous gift with audiences across the country and around the globe. Luther College (www.luther.edu) Founded in 1861 by Norwegian immigrants, Luther College provides its 2,500 students with a classic liberal arts education. Luther offers more than 60 majors and pre-professional and certificate programs leading to the bachelor of arts degree. The college’s strong academic program includes internships, professional semesters, and extensive studyabroad opportunities. Dedicated and talented faculty help Luther students develop solid research, writing, and critical-thinking skills, while the close-knit community imbues its members with an environmental and service ethos. The Phi Beta Kappa college is bolstered by its Lutheran foundation, celebrated for its vibrant music and arts tradition, and enriched by its strong athletic program. 20 Music/Arts Facilities Jenson-Noble Hall of Music, 325-seat Noble Recital Hall Center for Faith and Life, 1,600-seat main hall, 200-seat recital hall Center for the Arts, 225-seat black-box Jewel Theatre
