Circle of Life Bike Tour--Event Information
The Event
Local Events
This Spring, a very special event will be held that will undoubtedly result in
many Texans' lives being changed. Through a cooperative effort of Texas'
donor centers, a bike tour, called the "2nd Annual Lone Star Circle of Life" will
be held April 9th - 16th, to raise the awareness of the need for life-saving
donations of blood, marrow, organs and tissues.
Non-professional riders will be chosen for the tour. Each has a personal
reason for wanting to participate in this unique event. Most have had their
lives touched by blood, marrow, organ or tissue transplantation either as
a donor, a recipient, or a family member of a donor or patient in need.
Each day of the tour, the participants will ride in honor of a Texan in need
of a transplant. Local areas will choose their honorees.
The tour will begin in Temple, and continue through Waco, Hillsboro,
Dallas/Ft. Worth, Tyler, Crockett, Conroe, Houston, LaGrange, San
Antonio and end in Austin. Local events in each town or city are
planned to give the community a chance to participate in blood
donation, register for the National Marrow Donor Program, and sign
an organ and tissue donation card. Recipients, donors and donor
families will also be on hand to share their experiences and answer
questions.
Many organizations, companies and businesses are helping by offering
sponsorships to underwrite the cost of the tour, as well as much-needed
funds to help with tissue typing expenses.
Circle of Life Bike Tour--Event Information
Communities throughout the route are encouraged to take this
opportunity to learn more about life-saving donations and support their
neighbors searching for a life-saving gift.

One out of every 20 Texans will need blood at some point of their lives.
Each year, over 30,000 new patients are diagnosed with a life-threatening
disease that may be cured with a marrow transplant.
It takes eight whole blood donations to provide the effective dose of one
apheresis blood donation.
Each day, an average of seven people die while waiting for an organ.
There are over 77 organs and tissues that can be transplanted.
Each year 20 million blood components are transfused.

Circle of Life Bike Tour -- The Need
The Need
Mission Statement:
To raise the awareness of the need for life-saving donations of blood, marrow,
organs and tissues.
Blood
Blood is a vital, life-saving liquid with a limited shelf life, so the supply must be
constantly replenished. More than 20 million units of blood components are
transferred to about 4 million patients each year. About one out of every 20 Texans
will need blood at some point in their lives. However, less than 5% of the eligible
population in Texas donates blood. Supply and demand fluctuate which can cause
life-threatening shortages!
Marrow
Each year, 30,000 patients are diagnosed with a life-threatening disease that could
be cured with a marrow transplant - if a match is found. Approximately 70% of the
patients in need of a transplant rely on the National Marrow Donor Program to
locate a volunteer, unrelated marrow donor.
Finding a marrow donor match is a difficult process and nearly half of those in need
will not find a match in time.
Apheresis
Apheresis means separating blood into platelets, plasma or red cells as it is being
drawn. These components are critical for patients with burns, chronic blood
Circle of Life Bike Tour -- The Need
disorders, sickle cell, cancer therapy or open heart surgery. It takes eight whole
blood donations to provide the effective dose of one apheresis.
Organs and Tissues
Transplantation is one of the most remarkable success stories in the history of
medicine. It is often the only hope for thousands of people suffering from organ
failure or in desperate need of a life enhancing or life saving tissue. More than
50,000 Americans await organs while hundreds of thousands more could benefit
from tissue transplants. Each day, an average of seven people die while waiting for
an organ.
Organs than can be transplanted include heart, liver, lungs, kidney, pancreas and
small bowel. Tissues used in transplant include bone, skin, heart valves, corneas,
veins, cartilage and tendons.

Circle of Life Bike Tour -- Riders
The Riders
Eleven riders have been selected for the eight day bike ride. The riders' lives have
been personally touched by blood, marrow, organ or tissue donation in some way.
During the tour, each participant will ride on behalf of Texans who are in need of a
transplant, blood or platelets.
1. Barry Wall
City: San Antonio, Texas
Age: 42
Employer: Southwestern Bell
Reason for Riding: Barry has two cousins that are heart
recipients. He is a regular blood donor, registered with the Marrow
Donor Program. Barry also serves as a member of the Education
sub-committee at the Lisa Landry Childress Foundation, teaching
children about donation and transplantation.
"It is my desire to eliminate the waiting list by educating the public
on a massive scale, doing whatever it takes to teach the truth about
donation and transplantation."
2. Fred Carter
City: Belton, Texas
Employment: Central Texas Council of Governments
Age: 35
Reason for Riding: Eight years ago, Fred was diagnosed
with leukemia and received an autologous bone marrow
transplant. Since then, the need to raise awareness for blood, marrow, organs
and tissue donation is near and dear to his heart.
"Because I had leukemia, I am not able to give blood or sign and
Circle of Life Bike Tour -- Riders
organ donor card. The Circle of Life Bike Tour gives me the
opportunity to urge others to do so. Be a donor and share the gift of
life- YOU can help make the difference for others!"
3. Tim Dixon
City: Waco, Texas
Age: 32
Employment: Owner, Pecan Grove Funeral Home
Reason for Riding: To increase the awareness for the need for
organs, tissues, blood, and marrow and the Gift of Life Program
when a loved one has passed away.
"I ride mainly for those in need of transplants, but also to increase
the need for funeral directors to become involved in this life saving
program."
4. Mario Ortiz
City: Houston, Texas
Age: 43
Employment: National Marrow Donor Program Recruiter
Reason for Riding: Mario works for Gulf Coast Marrow Donor
Program and sees first hand the tremendous need for volunteers to
come forward for the National Marrow Donor Program Registry.
"I honestly feel that one person can make a difference!"
5. John Schuchmann
City: Temple, Texas
Age: 52
Employment: physician
Reason for Riding: John wants to support:
1. the tremendous health benefits of regular exercise
2. the importance of bicycle safety (helmet use and considerate
sharing of the roadways between cyclists and motorists)
3. the program of organ donation (taking care of our bodies and enjoying
them and then passing any useful spare parts along to others).
"Even in this era of computers and amazing inventions, the human
body remains the ultimate in both complexity of design and
simplicity of function. Caring for our bodies will give us more
satisfaction and opportunities in life. Passing along any useful
organs to others allows us to unselfishly enhance the quality of life
Circle of Life Bike Tour -- Riders
of another fellow human."
6. Danny Ausmus
City: Longview, Texas
Age: 45
Employment: Self employed
Reason for Riding: Danny’s son, Cody, has leukemia and is
a survivor at the age of seven. He is also a mentor for the
leukemia team in training, and works with the “Because I
Care” recruitment group for the National Marrow Donor Program.”
“I am riding not only because of Cody’s leukemia, but also for all of
those who have sacrificed far more and fought much harder than I
will have to on my bike ride. No matter what my ability is, just my
availability should somehow strengthen the cause. The ones we
ride in honor of or in memory of have never had the option of giving
up, and so neither should we!”
7. Tom Haycraft
City: Dallas, Texas
Age: 36
Employment: Baylor University Medical Center
Reason for Riding: Tom is a competitive cyclist who has worked
in the field of solid organ transplantation for the past 8 years. His
wife has worked on the organ recovery side of transplantation and
has seen the difficult decisions grieving families must make in consenting to
donate the organs of loved ones.
“ I recognize the gift I have in terms of good health, and have
applied my knowledge and skills as a Registered Nurse to helping
others. I look forward to helping raise the awareness of the need for
life-saving donations of blood, marrow, organs and tissues.”
8. Patricia Lang
City: Cranston, RI
Age: 45
Employment: Director of the Marrow Donor Program in Rhode
Island
Reason for Riding: Patricia has worked as a medical technologist
for over 20 years which has put her in daily contact with patients
and the battles they face. She is a rider with the Leukemia Society
Team in Training Program.
Circle of Life Bike Tour -- Riders
“As the Director of the Marrow Donor Program in Rhode Island, I
am conscious of the needs of numerous patients and their families
when it comes to bone marrow transplants and blood transfusions.
My in-laws live in San Antonio, and I would like to help spread
awareness of the need for donors in Texas”.
9. Preston Tyree
City: Austin, Texas
Age: 55
Employment: Texas SuperCyclist Project
Reason for Riding: Preston is a frequent blood donor and has
seen the impact of donation of the lives and economics of the
recipients. He has given 10 gallons of blood in his career as a blood donor. He is
also president of the Austin Cycling Association and Education director of the
Texas Bicycle Coalition.
“I am especially excited about the “Lone Star Circle of Life” tour
because it gives us a chance to get the word about blood donation
out to people who don’t know how easy and satisfying it can be. I
have a rare blood type and have given to a number of children
scheduled for major surgery and was lucky enough to meet the
children”.
10. Saundra Karnes
City: Waco, Texas
Age: 53
Employment: Self-employed
Reason for Riding: To promote the need of blood, marrow,
tissue, and organ donations. Such donations gave my brother,
John Osment, the gift of sight through a cornea transplant, a heart transplant
gave my friend, Tim Sherman, 15 years of life, and a liver transplant is the
reason my friend, Michael Schiller, is alive today.
“One never knows when one's life will be touched by the donor
program such as my life has been touched. Give the gift of life--it is
the ultimate way for one to live forever!”
Circle of Life Bike Tour -- Riders
11. Frank Hetterscheidt
City: Temple, Texas
Age: 33
Employment: City of Temple Police Department
Reason for Riding: Frank donates blood and platelets on a
regular basis and thinks donating organs is a very important
cause.
“ I would like to see the laws changed to make donating organs
easier.”

Bike Tour Honorees
1. Dustin Grisham: Dustin is a 6-year-old boy with leukemia. His family and
community have supported him with a huge blood drive at Troy High School.
2. Jennifer Webb: Jennifer is a student at TAMU who recently donated bone
marrow for a small child. Being a college Student, she had to juggle her
exam schedule around her marrow harvest, but found everyone in the
university willing to help. The latest update on her young recipient is very
good.
3. Colton O’Neal: Colton is a young child from Kosse who is battling cancer.
The communities of Mexia-Groesbeck have held three blood drives in his
honor.
4. John Scheffer – John is a recipient of a liver last August after being on the
waiting list for several years. He is also the recipient of the
Saturn/UAW bike raffle during the last bike tour. He said
following his transplant, “At 43 years old, I was a man dying.
At 44, I am a man looking forward to life”. He also stated that
he might even try to ride in the 2000 bike tour.
5. In memory of Ryan Lee Webster – “Ryan was a very giving child. In March
of 1998, Ryan died suddenly from a brain aneurysm. Several
weeks before, we had watched a T.V. show about organ
donation. He informed me if something ever happened to him,
for me to donate his organs. So when the doctor asked us about
donation, we did not have to think about it. Ryan has saved 7
lives and all are doing very well” – The Webster Family
6. In memory of Mike Guest – Mike was a 33 year old husband and father
Circle of Life Bike Tour -- Map/Route
when he began his battle with leukemia. When it was decided
that Mike needed a bone marrow transplant, his family and
friends began working endlessly to find a matched donor for
him. Mike did have a successful transplant, but died of a heart
attack several weeks following the transplant. Many drives were
held in his behalf that resulted in over 400 volunteers being
added to the NMDP registry. Mike was at each drive, personally thanking the
Waco community that came out to support him.
7. Amanda Langrill – Amanda was the recipient of a heart and lung transplant
when she was five years old. She was the first heart/lung
transplant recipient from a single donor. Amanda is now eleven
years old.
8. Kaitlyn Rayann Grindle – Katy was born in Tyler, Texas and was a health
baby for the first two months of her life. She then began to
develop severe jaundice – even her eyes were yellow. After
many tests, it was determined that she had Biliary Atresia and
immediate surgery was necessary. This surgery was not
sucessful, and Katy was placed on the liver transplant list.
She is due to receive part of her father’s liver on April 6th in
Houston. Katy’s grandparents live in Waco and have been working hard to
help raise funds for Katy’s medications and anti-rejection medication.
9. Dorothy Outlaw – Dorothy’s been waiting for a kidney transplant for over
two years.
10. Tim Sherman – DON’T TAKE YOUR ORGANS TO HEAVEN, HEAVEN
KNOWS WE NEED THEM HERE!
Timothy Michael Sherman was born in October 1961, only one
month before I was born. We met in high school and were
married in 1981. At the age of 23, Tim was diagnosed with
Cardiomyopathy (an enlargement of the heart muscle). On
June, 1985, Tim received a second chance at life - a new heart. He lived a
full and happy life even though at times the set backs were difficult to handle.
He loved the outdoors and I know he will be smiling down on Sandra as she
rides.
Without the heart, Tim would have died in 1985 and we would have never
been able to see and do the things we’ve done. Without the heart, we would
not have had two beautiful children for which I am particularly grateful. They
bring me great comfort. Our son is nine years young and our daughter is six
years young.
Circle of Life Bike Tour -- Map/Route
I thank the family that was able to donate their son’s heart during a traumatic
family event. They will never know how much joy they brought to our lives.
Tim never wasted a moment in his day - he was always moving. He would
tell me that he didn’t want to waste his time sleeping, and he didn’t spend
much time sleeping. Tim lived a full and happy life, but lost his battle for life
on March 10, 1999. He died while waiting for a new heart. He became ill
three years ago, and was told the only way to repair the damage was to have
another heart transplant. Tim waited for three years and the heart he waited
for never came. He was a kind and wonderful husband and father; we will
miss him forever.

1. Jenna Marie Richbourg: Jenna, who will be two years old this April, has a
genetic disorder called Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS),
which is also known as Hurler Syndrome. She had a bone
marrow transplant in May of 1998 from a donor found
through the National Marrow Donor Program Registry.
Jenna is doing wonderful.
Circle of Life Bike Tour -- Map/Route
2. Jessica Sexton - Jessica is an active 15 year year old sophmore honor
student at Paschal High School. She had an autologous bone marrow
transplant in 1991, after being diagnosed with AML. Jessica is doing great
after 8 years. She is a sports trainer for football and baseball at her school
and hopes to to into sports medicine after college.
3. Kimberly Roden – Kim was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia in
March of 1989 at two and a half years old. She relapsed in May
of 1993 with acute myelogenous leukemia and received a bone
marrow transplant in August of that year. It has now been six
years since her transplant and she is doing very well.
4. Danielle Taylor – Danielle was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous
leukemia in 1997 when she was seven. She underwent an
unrelated donor bone marrow transplant the following July.
Today she is in remission and doing very well. Without the
transplant she would have eventually succumbed to the CML.
5. Ashley Nicole Benavidez – Ashley received a bone marrow transplant in
June of 1998 and is doing great!
6. John Osment – John received a cornea transplant in September of 1997. He
had been on the waiting list for over a year before an appropriate match was
found. John is also the brother of one of the 1999 Circle of Life tour riders,
Saundra Karnes.
7. Steven Haley – Steven is a five year old that suffered from leukemia until a
total stranger donated bone marrow to him. Steven and his family will meet
the donor, who is from another part of the country, for the first time during the
event at Cook Children’s Hospital.
8. “Steven’s Donor” – is Christopher Coats from Alaska. Christopher and his
wife flew to Fort Worth to meet Steven and his family for the first time during
the bike tour.
9. Reed Mills – Reed had a bone marrow transplant two and a half years ago.
Circle of Life Bike Tour -- Map/Route
10. Malinda Silva - Malinda is part of the marketing department at Cook
Children’s hospital and is a regular platelet donor.
11. Anna Van Giesen

1. Briana Haley: Briana is the 4 years old daughter of former Cowboys football
player, Charles Haley. She was diagnosed with acute
lymphocytic leukemia in May of 1997, and is currently in
remission. The Haley family was the recipient of the 1998
minority recruitment award given by the National Marrow Donor
Program.
2. Brittanie Struggs: Brittanie is ten years old and was diagnosed with acute Tcell leukemia (lymphoblastic) in June of 1998. She needs a
bone marrow transplant and as she is African American, her
best chance of finding a matched donor is from the African
American Community.
3. Rosalinda Valles: Lindy has leukemia and has been searching for a matched
donor for over two years. She is very involved in the marrow
donor program and tries to help organize drives and educate
people about the importance of donation as much as possible.
4. Emily Imadomwanyi - "Emily struggles through every day, and every day,
her courage and strength inspire me," says Emily's mother,
Patricia. Her red blood cells do not reproduce as they should,
which deprives her body of oxygen, causing weakness,
dizziness, and excruciating pain in her joints. Emily has had
pneumonia, surgery, and multiple blood transfusions. As a
sickle cell sufferer, she faces severe bacterial infections,
damage to her internal organs, strokes, and a shortened life span.
Circle of Life Bike Tour -- Map/Route
Despite her illness, Emily believes that she can do everything other children
do. She wants to be a doctor when she grows up, so that she can help other
children who are sick.
The only treatments for children with sickle cell disease are frequent blood
transfusions-often weekly-and bone marrow transplants. Emily and her family
are grateful for the blood donors who have shared their gift of life. They know
that Emily's future depends on continued research in the fight against sickle
cell anemia; on the care she receives from the many dedicated medical
professionals who treat her; and to you: a blood donor whose gift means life
for Emily and hope for her family.

5. Martha Reep – Martha Reep is one of Baylor's honorees. She is a 46 year
old teacher and mother of two children that received a bone marrow
transplant March 5, 1998 from an unrelated 26 year old young man. When
Martha was diagnosed in 1996, her doctors decided to test for compatibility
for a transplant from her siblings. Unfortunately, Martha's one sister did not
match closely enough to supply her marrow. So the search coordinators at
Baylor went to work. They found her a match who willingly donated his
marrow one year ago. She is looking forward to meeting her donor soon!
6. Luis Mendez - Luis was a marrow donor for a 16 year old girl named Nicole.
They were reunited after a long year of awaiting meeting each
other. Luis is somewhat of a “computer guru” and searched the
internet regularly for this “little blood sister” as he referred to
her. Since the NMDO does not allow donors and recipients to
meet for one year following transplant, they were both
overwhelmed when they were finally able to meet in 1997.
Nicole is now a thriving college student thanks to Luis’ selfless gift and Luis’
life is much more full knowing that he could give someone a second chance
at live.
7. John Munoz – John is a marrow donor for a 16 year-old girl. Being the father
of three beautiful little girls himself, he knew the importance of his donation,
not only the patient herself, but also to her family. John is an employee of one
of the nation’s leading telephone companies and keeps himself busy with
Circle of Life Bike Tour -- Map/Route
work, wife, and his three girls. He is looking forward to meeting his patient
and her family soon and was happy to be able to help by donating marrow.
8. In memory of Clay Jones – Clay was a fun-loving, gregarious sort of person.
He was an athlete, being involved in track, football and basketball. When he
was 16 years old, he was struck by lightning on the Forney High School
practice field. Four days later, Clay died at Baylor Medical Center. It was just
a few months earlier that Clay signed his organ donor card. He gave his
kidneys, corneas, bone and tissue grafts to help others. Even after his death,
as in life, Clay continues to give.

diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia. He had a bone
marrow transplant and later a stem cell transplant. Through his
transplants and clinical trials, he maintained a remarkable
optimism and sense of humor. He lost his battle with leukemia
at the age of eight, a few months after meeting his donor.
2. Joaquin Gay: Joaquin has chronic myelogenous leukemia
and is currently waiting for a bone marrow
transplant.
3. Charles T. Rau – Charlie was hit by a car while jogging in the summer of
1997. He had a severely broken leg and severed arm. His
arm was re-attached. Charlie used 48 units of blood in the
first four of eight surgeries. He cannot say enough to thank
the blood center and donors who contributed to saving his
life and the lives of others.
4. Randy Creech – Randy, the father of two children and three grandchildren,
received a heart transplant in July of 1990. During a routine
physical examination, it was discovered that Randy suffered
from Cardiomyopathy. Randy has met his donor's family and
one of his grandchildren was named in honor of his donor.
Randy worked for Exxon for 25 years and now is self
employed. He and his wife are both very active volunteers
with LifeGift Organ Donation Center and St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital’s
Heart Exchange.
5. In Memory of Ray Glenn – Raymond was happily married and the father of
a beautiful daughter. He loved to hunt and fish, but his great
passion was the F.F.A. During his high school days, he had
attained the highest level in this organization as a Lone Star
Farmer. He had raised a championship pig which he showed
in the Clear Creek livestock show. Raymond died on
Valentines day in 1992, and became a tissue donor. The
following January, his mother required a heart transplant and she continues
to give many hours in educating the public about the need for organ and
tissue donation as a volunteer with LifeGift Organ Donation Center.
6. In memory of Bob Zavalla – - In 1986, Bob Zavalla was living in Alaska –
panning for gold when he made a decision to turn his life
around. He returned to Texas, married Judy Zavalla and
became the step dad of Amanda and Matthew Miles. Bob
has a severe heart condition, but he never gave up. He was
a Prison Fellowship volunteer in the Texas Department of
Corrections, conducting marriage seminars for the inmates

and their wives several times per year. The things that meant the most in
Bob’s life included God, His Family and working out at the YMCA. Upon his
death, Bob was a tissue donor – fulfilling his promise to himself to turn his life
around.
7. Michael Schiller – Michael had a liver transplant two and a half months ago.
There is no rejection or complications and he is doing great two months out.
8. Alex Erickson – Alex is two years old. At 3 months, he was diagnosed with
liver cancer. “One time, after one of his chemo treatments,
Alex was gray and ashen. When he received his blood
transfusion, I watched him turn pink from his toes to his
head. Blood is a true ‘gift of life’ for people who need it” –
Anne Marie Cervenka, Gulf Coast Reg. Blood Center
9. Lisa Batson – Lisa is a 31 year old from east Texas. Lisa was diagnosed
with acute myelogenous leukemia May 1997 and had her unrelated donor
transplant in March of this year. She’s been married to her husband, Mark,
for 11 wonderful years. They have 2 children, Michael, 9, and Maylnn who is

1. Janet Patterson: Janet registered with the National Marrow Donor Program
about six years ago.
“A year or so later, when I learned of the need for minorities to
be registered, I was determined to help get that message out to
the folks in Austin. Fortunately, others in the Austin area shared
my goal and determination.
Circle of Life Bike Tour -- Map/Route
For about 5 years, we have been working locally in the minority
communities stressing the need for minorities to be registered in
the National Program. We have brought our concerns to
predominately minority churches, schools, businesses and profit
and non-profit organizations in the Austin Area.
In addition to educating by presentations and videos, we have
conducted bone marrow drives at these same entities. Although
we feel blessed by the donors we have registered, we are
committed to continue until we have registered every eligible
minority in our area or until there is no longer a need. A bit
ambitious on our part, but we are committed.”
2. Martin Chapa: Martin Chapa is 35 years old, lives in Austin and works for
the University of Texas. His father died of Cancer when he
was two months old, and he had a cousin that died of
Leukemia when she was just two years old. He registered
with the National Marrow Donor Program several years ago.
Last Fall, he was identified as being a match for a young
woman that needed a donor. Martin not only donated bone marrow to this
patient, but later made a second donation of stem cells harvested by
apheresis to the same recipient.
“Being a bone marrow donor has honest to God changed my
life! It’s my mission in life to educate my fellow Hispanic / African
American brothers and sisters. We need to help our own
communities and sign up on the National Marrow Donor
Program Registry.”
3. Elissa L. Benford: Elissa is co-founder of Gift of Life, which was started in
1992 to assist the bone marrow program in the recruitment,
retention and education in the minority community. Their first
bone marrow drive was held in June of 1993 in Austin. They
usually schedule two drives a year for the Austin community.
Elissa registered with the NMDP in April 1992 and has
volunteered for the Zulu Festival in San Antonio as well as all
of the Austin drives. “Through our efforts, we have registered several
hundred minorities on the registry”.
4. In memory of Victor Ojeda - Victor was diagnosed with leukemia in 1991 at
Circle of Life Bike Tour -- Map/Route
the age of 6. In 1992, shortly after the Blood and Tissue Center
of Central Texas opened the National Marrow Donor Program,
Mary Ojeda, Victor’s mother contacted them to ask if they would
hold a marrow drive at their church in hope of finding a marrow
match for Victor. Through the efforts of Mary and her many
friends, the first drive for the Central Texas Marrow Donor
program was held in September 1992. 298 new potential donors were added
o the registry from that drive. May more drives were held for Victor within the
next few months that resulted in entering more than 1,000 donors on the
registry. A year later, Victor lost his battle to his blood disease. We were all
greatly saddened but his memory and love will remain with all of us always.
Victor’s mother. Mary, continues to work with the Blood and Tissue Center
and has been instrumental in putting many more potential donors on the
Registry. God Bless all of those who need a match and cannot find one
because there are still not enough minority donors on the registry.
5. Jessica DuHon – Jessica was a marrow donor last year to a 15 year old.
6. Mary Pierce – Little did she know in 1973 when Mary Pierce signed her first
organ donor card that twenty years later she would be on the receiving end of
a life saving lung transplant. Mary was diagnosed in 1987 with alpha 1
antitrypsin deficiency, or genetic emphysema. By the age of 40, she had lost
85% of her lung capacity. She learned she would die without a lung
transplant.
Last month, Mary celebrated the sixth anniversary of her successful double
lung transplant.
After her transplant in 1993, Mary turned to her bicycle to help rehabilitate a
body, weakened by years of disability. By 1994, she had won two bronze
medals racing in the US Transplant Games. In 1995, she won a gold racing
in the World Games in England. Since then, she has ridden throughout the
United States promoting awareness for organ donation. Twice she rode the
American Lung Association’s Houston to the Alamo Challenge.
In 1998, she rode the Big Ride Across American from Seattle to Washington
DC in 48 days. Riding with her was another Alpha 1 patient, Shirley St. Cyr,
who is presently on the waiting list for a lung transplant. Shirley did the entire
Big Ride with benefit of an oxygen tank strapped to her bike. Together the
duo represents the very best of rehabilitation in the face of overpowering
odds.

7. Cibby Varkey– Cibby is 29 years old and is working on her Ph.D. in
biochemistry at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Two weeks
before her first wedding anniversary, she was diagnosed with a blood cancer
known as multiple myeloma. Her current treatment of chemotherapy is only
temporary. Cibby is searching for a bone marrow match to cure her disease.
She is of South Asian/Indian descent, and there has not yet been a donor
found with her tissue type.
Her cousin, Jaya, is a freshman at the University of Texas and is joined by
other cousins and sisters to hold over fifteen bone marrow drives on Cibby’s
behalf. Jaya has organized students drives at both the University of Texas
and Texas A&M University to try and register volunteers from the South
Asian community. “Since I was diagnosed with cancer, the concerned
response of the community has been an overwhelming source of comfort to
me and my family. The South Asian community is my only hope to receive
the lifesaving bone marrow transplant I need” – Cibby
8. Jaya Matthew – Jaya is a freshman at the University of Texas, and the
cousin of Cibby Varkey. Jaya describes Cibby as being not only her cousin,
but one of her best friends. She has worked very hard at two of the largest
Universities in the state to bring awareness of the need for South Asians to
register with the National Marrow Donor Program. One of these drives at
Texas A&M University, will occur during the bike tour.
9. In memory of Darrell Dochstader – Darrell was diagnosed in June of 1996
with CML. He was fortunate to find a matched donor and had a bone marrow
transplant in March of 1997. Several months later, he developed a secondary
illness and died at the age of 55.
10. Jerry Ackers – Jerry received the gift of sight through a donation of corneas.
11. Dedurie V. Kirk – Dedurie was a marrow donor three years ago to a six
month old baby. Dedurie serves as a project manager of
Rehabilitation and System Improvement Projects for the city of
Austin Water and Wastewater Utility. She is a member of the
Mount Olive Baptist church, serving as youth activity
coordinator, National Society of Black Engineers, national
Forum of Black Public Administrators, G.I.F.T., Bone Marrow
Donor Foundation and Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. She is founder of Emerald
Ventures, Inc., is a poet and playwright, has co-authored a book as well as
been published in a national magazine.
12. K.C. Campbell – K.C. was diagnosed with leukemia in 1992. It took four
Circle of Life Bike Tour -- Map/Route
years to find him a match, but he did receive a bone marrow transplant in
March of 1996. Unfortunately, he came out of remission and died the
following month.

Bike Tour Honorees
Circle of Life Bike Tour -- Map/Route
4. In memory of Victor Ojeda - Victor was diagnosed with leukemia in 1991 at
the age of 6.
Circle of Life Bike Tour -- Map/Route
because there are still not enough minority donors on the registry.
5. Jessica DuHon – Jessica was a marrow donor last year to a 15 year old.
6. Mary Pierce – Little did she know in 1973 when Mary Pierce signed her first
organ donor card that twenty years later she would be on the
receiving end of a life saving lung transplant. Mary was
diagnosed in 1987 with alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency, or genetic
emphysema. By the age of 40, she had lost 85% of her lung
capacity. She learned she would die without a lung transplant.
Circle of Life Bike Tour -- Map/Route
the lifesaving bone marrow transplant I need” – Cibby
8. Jaya Matthew – Jaya is a freshman at the University of Texas, and the
cousin of Cibby Varkey. Jaya describes Cibby as being not
only her cousin, but one of her best friends. She has worked
very hard at two of the largest Universities in the state to bring
awareness of the need for South Asians to register with the
National Marrow Donor Program. One of these drives at Texas
A&M University, will occur during the bike tour.
It took four
years to find him a match, but he did receive a bone marrow transplant in
March of 1996. Unfortunately, he came out of remission and died the
following month.

Thank you to all those involved in making the 1999 "Lone Star Circle of Life" bike
tour an outstanding success. We could not have done it without a great rider team,
support team, local event coordinators for each city, and our wonderful sponsors
that made it all possible.
Lone Star Circle of Life Bike Tour Honoree Celebrates Life
Last April when the Lone Star Circle of Life Bike Tour stopped at Richland Mall in
Waco, one of the Waco honorees was not able to be there. Kaitlyn Rayann Grindle
was in Houston waiting for a liver transplant.
Kaitlyn was a health baby for the first two months of her life. She then began to
develop severe jaundice – even her eyes were yellow. After many tests, it was
determined that she had biliary atresia and immediate surgery was necessary. This
Circle of Life Bike Tour--Thank you
surgery was not successful, and Kaitlyn was placed on the liver transplant list. She
was due to receive part of her father’s liver, but the doctors determined that it was
not physically possible for him to be a donor. Kaitlyn did receive a donor liver one
month later and is now a healthy and happy two year old.
Kaitlyn’s grandparents live in the Waco area, so she was named as one of the
honorees for that city. As she was born in Tyler, Danny Ausmus from Longview
rode for her in the bike tour.
Kaitlyn’s family recently held a “thank-you” reception in Waco to thank the
community for their support during her hospitalization and transplant. Danny was
unable to make the trip to meet his little honoree, but another rider, Tim Dixon was
there representing the Circle of Life Bike Tour. Tim presented Katy with his rider
jersey from the 1999 tour.
Little Kaitlyn was all smiles
at the reception to thank
those who helped during her
transplant.
Tim Dixon, right, presents his 1999 Lone Star
Circle of Life rider jersey to Kaitlyn Grindle
while her mother and father look on.
We wish you the best, Katy, and hope your future is always as bright as your
wonderful smile!
