“We’re so glad to be living here now.
If he needs a little bit of
extra help, we have it.
Our oldest daughter is a nurse,

there’s a wellness clinic right here.”

and I think,
It’s nice.

“It’s rare for a community
like this to have such
a deep connection with
the larger community.
La Jolla is home.
Casa de Mañana is home.”
She looked out the picture window,
“We enjoy our new friends—
such wonderful new friends.
And our old friends?
Well, they just come visit us here.”
She paused.
“That’s great, don’t you think?”
“I walked in and
I felt I was
in my own home,” he said.
“It was coming home.
It’s a very special place
for me.”
He continued,
“Yes, it’s a very
special place.”
“I sold my car,” he laughed.
“I wasn’t using it anymore.
It’s magnificent—we can walk everywhere.
We like to walk.
We’re right in the middle of everything.”
A world by the sea.
Where the water sculpts the shore, you find the art of community
and the warmth of the coastal sunshine. It’s different than other sunshine.
It’s different here, in this place to call home.
He pointed out at the shoreline.
“My children and I used to snorkel at the beach across the way,” he said,
turning to his wife, her face illuminated by the morning sun coming through the window.
“It’s always been a place of importance to us.
We’d walk along the coast and she’d say, ‘There’s our retirement place.’
That was twenty years ago!”
Casa de Mañana offers award-winning full-service retirement living in a historic setting on

THE CURIOUS
the accomplished
It’s a close-knit group. You’ll find them in
the dining room, by the fountain, tending to
the roses, and on the trail. They are engineers,
ballroom dancers, husbands and friends.
They are sophisticated and humble, quirky
and kind. Professionals, amateurs, devoted
mothers and teachers. They’ve brought their
great histories with them and some have
started afresh.
Their children are proud. “They say it looks
like the right place for me. My grandkids love
the park, the pool and the places to eat. My
daughter asked me again how old you have to
be to get in!”
The fathers, the retired, the late bloomers
and early risers. Bakers, geologists, foreign
language instructors and pediatricians.
They are friendly and diverse, funny and
soft-spoken. A retired Navy commander, a
magazine editor. And those who have always
enjoyed solitude have found it at Casa too,
in the restorative energy of the sea.
From Ireland, Chile and Germany by way
of China. From Holland, from Hawaii, Reno,
Palm Springs and Colorado Springs. And a
few of the La Jolla crowd who strolled by their
whole lives, and others who came to dance
under the stars. And everyone echoes the same
refrain: Where else would you want to be?
“I’ve lived in a lot of places, but this is something special—I sensed that when I walked
in the first time.” Many residents describe it
as coming home and knowing they’ve made
the right decision. They take in the readings
at Warwick’s, the film festivals and sunshine.
They were, and some are now, docents at the
museum—a new start at eighty. They’ve come
for the sense of security, support and renewal.
“People come from all over just to see our
view,” he smiles. “We wake up every day to the
best weather in the world. I call up my buddy:
How are you doing with your two feet of snow?”
He laughs and picks up his wife’s hand in his.
“It’s good, it’s good.”

The soft sound
Tansy Sheehy. Casa de Mañana’s activities director is part concierge, part friend, part magician.
“Everyone here is pretty vocal about what they
want to do. And I try to provide it for them,”
Tansy explains. “I get symphony tickets, I book
wine tours, we go to lectures—a lot of lectures.
This group really loves learning.”
The residents at Casa de Mañana appreciate
all the great outings. They’ve got a wonderful
luxury bus for getting there, and they do it all—
highbrow to lowbrow, Shakespeare and slapstick—as long as it’s good. The quality control
comes courtesy of Tansy and Casa de Mañana’s
devoted staff. Tansy says, “Casa residents
like to live life their way and we help make
it happen.” She continues, “In fact, a lot of
people tell me life gets better at Casa. To live
well by the sea with friends—it’s a great life.”
There’s a mutual admiration society between
the residents and the Casa staff. “The residents
give back so much—they threw us a big party.
They care for us as much as we care for them.
We’re all here because we love what we do, and
adding a personal touch to their experience can
make a difference in their lives. But they don’t
realize how much they mean to us. It’s more
than a job for all of us here—in housekeeping,
maintenance and dining services—it’s really
more a sense of family.”
So, while there are the parties, the relaxing
walks around town and the samba lessons,
there’s also the attention and devotion to each
individual. Tansy looks at it this way, “We’ve
got to get it right because we’re in their home.
We have to do our best all the time.” It’s the
respect. It’s the personal connection. And it
also happens to be a lot of fun.

LIVING WELL.
Finding joy
every day.
Nurturing the mind,
body and spirit.
A dip in the pool, a post-dip massage or a walk on the sand. Yoga, meditation,
fiction or non-fiction. The art and culture of the Village. Connecting—over a cup
of tea, on Skype with grandkids or rediscovering old friends on Facebook.
There’s Wi-Fi inside and lots of nature outside. It’s all here at Casa de Mañana.
And it’s all part of living well—socially, spiritually, emotionally and physically—
with care right here at home if you need it. You choose your way, Casa de Mañana
supports it. Balance, vitality, fresh and healthy food, and the company of friends.
Wellbeing lives here. The sense of belonging, the strength of community.
A place with a pedigree, a storied history—of a hotel,
cotillions, gathered silk. The tiles, the arches, the grand ballroom
and staircase. A legacy above the rocky bluffs.
