WellChild - Three Peaks Challenge registration pack

Three Peaks Challenge
20-22 May & 15-17 July 2016
WHAT TO EXPECT
On this fully supported trek you will climb Wales’, England’s and Scotland’s tallest mountains (Snowdon, Scafell Pike
and Ben Nevis) all within 36 hours.
The majority of people undertake this challenge from Scotland down during a Saturday/Sunday but to avoid everyone
else we’ll start in Wales and work our way up during a Friday/Saturday. This means you finish at the top of Ben Nevis the
tallest mountain in the UK and then stay overnight in Fort William to celebrate!
On Friday morning you’ll meet our double-decker coach which transports us between the mountains for the weekend at
either - Bristol, Cheltenham or Moseley. The coach becomes our home for the majority of the weekend and is well
equipped with a toilet and hot drinks facilities.
The first mountain we climb is Snowdon (1,085m) in Wales. Although it stands at 1,085m it is the quickest to climb taking
around four hours as we start over 300m above sea level. Leaving Wales Friday afternoon we stop for a hot meal at Tebay
services before climbing the second mountain Scafell Pike (977m) the highest mountain in England during the night which
many walkers in the UK will never do! Arriving back at the coach at approximately 5am Saturday morning it is time for
some sleep whilst we drive to our final mountain – Ben Nevis (1,344m) the highest mountain in Scotland and the UK!
After a few photos and a bite to eat thoughts turn to finishing the trek and the bar in Fort William.
Once you arrive from completing Ben Nevis the team will celebrate with a three course meal, drinks and well deserved
rest. Following a good night’s sleep you’ll awake on Sunday to a full breakfast to restock all those lost calories and then
it’s a restful journey on our coach back to the pickup points (possible drop off at Glasgow airport).

WHY WALK FOR WELLCHILD
WellChild is the national charity for sick children and is committed to ensuring that every child in the UK, no matter what
their situation, location or diagnosis, has the very best possible quality of care.
The charity funds a unique team of WellChild Children’s Nurses who play an essential role for families across the UK.
Those WellChild Nurses help to ensure that children can be cared for at home rather than in hospital wherever possible –
cutting through the confusion experienced by parents with a child in long-term hospital care and making sure that
families and other carers are able to meet the complicated needs of these young people.
In addition, WellChild funds a number of other projects designed to provide support to families caring for children and
young people with long-term or complex care needs. This includes the charity’s unique Helping Hands scheme which
enlists the support of volunteers from companies and organisations of all kinds from up and down the country to tackle
individual home development projects – helping seriously ill children, young people and their families in truly practical
ways.
WellChild’s programmes have helped many thousands of children and families, and the charity is determined to reach
many thousands more.
HOW WE HELPED ETHAN
Ethan was a happy, healthy two-year old and had been his usual boisterous self until one evening; he became hot and
would not eat. Concerned mum Lorraine put him to bed and kept checking on him but later that evening Ethan had a
seizure and was rushed to hospital.
Things went from bad to worse for Ethan. He developed Meningococcal
Septicaemia and soon his whole body was covered in a rash. Within a couple of
hours he was on life-support as doctors fought to save him. His mum was told the
terrible news that all his organs were failing and it was feared he had just a few
hours to live.
Gravely ill, he was transferred to the paediatric intensive-care unit at
Addenbrookes Hospital where his condition gradually stabilised and slowly began
to improve. He was in intensive-care for four weeks before being well enough to
be moved onto a normal ward, but his recovery came at a cost. Ethan had to
undergo a number of operations as a result of his illness. He has had his right leg
amputated at the knee and his left leg amputated at the ankle. He also lost the tips of his fingers.
While Ethan was fighting back from the brink in intensive care, WellChild Children’s Nurse Lucy came into his life. When
he pulled through and began to get better thoughts turned to the future. Apart from his physical disability Ethan will
now develop just like any other little boy and Lucy’s aim once he was well was to get him home from hospital with the
right care and support to live with his mum, his brothers and sister.
Mum Lorraine is full of praise for the way WellChild Nurse Lucy has been able to help the family. Lorraine said: “Lucy is
brilliant and has been a wonderful support. Anything I have asked for Lucy has helped with. Lucy has a great relationship
with Ethan.”
The good news is that, with Lucy’s help, Ethan is now back at home living with his family. Lorraine says his illness has not
affected his personality – now three years old, he is still very boisterous and a very special little boy. He loves cars,
ambulances and tractors and anything that is noisy and moves!

The coach will pick the team up at three main locations Bristol, Cheltenham and
Birmingham. A full brief of the challenge will take place ensuring you are
carrying the right food and equipment for the challenge. This brief will also
discuss the weather conditions and appropriate clothing you should wear. It is
important to join the coach to be present for this safety briefing and receive
your lunch. Unfortunately we will be unable to meet you at Snowdon as you will
miss this essential brief.
You will have been given your packed lunch on the coach prior to climbing Snowdon. The team will be split into two with
a faster group and slower group. The pace will be steady and if those in the faster group wish to drop back they can.
Snowdon is a relatively simple walk but has steep sections which test your legs. This is the perfect chance to chat to fellow
trekkers and get to know people. All the hard work is worth it as after two hours you’ll summit the mountain and if the
weather is clear, have spectacular views. It’s then back down the mountain to the waiting coach to transfer to our second
mountain!
On route to Scafell Pike we will stop for a hot meal at Tebay Services which is your chance to re-stock the energy lost and
prepare your equipment before your night walk! With one down and two to go although the smallest of the three it takes
a lot of energy as the walk takes you up and down peaks to reach the summit of Scafell Pike. Many people are anxious as
this is a night walk but you will have been fully briefed and have the expertise of our safety team to guide you throughout.
This mountain has the hardest terrain of all three with a mixture of paths, boulder fields and scree. However seeing the
sunrise as you descend from the mountain is magical and everyone has built a strong camaraderie during the night ready
for the final challenge.

After completing the second of our mountains we head for the
closest service station for a full English breakfast and to freshen
up. As it will be a long journey to Scotland this is great time to
replenish cereal bars, water and re-pack your bag ready for the
final mountain. After leaving the services everyone switches
their phones to silent and gets as much sleep as possible.
Just before lunch you will receive your sandwiches and goodie bags to build up your energy ready for the final mountain.
Following a full brief from the head of our safety team we will have had a full update on weather conditions and
recommendations for clothing.
We arrive at Ben Nevis and begin long steady climb which remains roughly at the same gradient throughout. Trekking up
past the waterfall which is the half way point and then on to the famous zigzags before reaching the summit. Depending
on the time of year and previous weather condition there may be a small amount of snow at the top! The views can be
spectacular and as we reach the summit the team has the opportunity for a team photo and snack before heading back
down the mountain getting closer to the bar and comfy bed!
The walk back gets quicker and as we reach the bottom there is lots of congratulations, a bottle of celebratory beer (or
soft drink, handshakes and hugs.
We are then transported to our hotel for the night where a quick shower and change of clothes makes a huge difference
and everyone meets in the bar to celebrate, share stories, show off blisters and enjoy the three course celebratory meal!

Three Peaks Challenge

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What’s included in the cost of the challenge?
 Full safety team.
 Transport throughout the challenge.
 Parking at Cheltenham and Bristol.
 Group first aid.
 All meals (except dinner Friday night, breakfast Saturday morning
and lunch Sunday where we stop at service stations).
 One night’s twin room accommodation.
What isn’t included?
 X3 meals at service station stops.
 Snacks.
 Personal insurance.
 Transport to the pickup locations.
What do I need to do to take part?
 Pay a £75 holding donation and pledge to attempt to raise an
additional £475 in sponsorship (total £550).
 Provide your own kit (including sturdy ankle high walking boots).
 Personal travel insurance is optional and at your discretion.
 Bring money to pay for extra food and drink during the weekend.
How is the team supported?
Before the challenge you will have regular contact and updates from the Challenge Events Manager. There may also be an
opportunity to test your fitness and meet up in the Brecon Beacons with other team members. You will receive training
and fundraising advice once signed up and can contact the Challenge Events Manager if you have any questions. During
the challenge our safety team will lead the walk and guide you throughout the event ensuring your safety. You will
receive regular safety and weather updates throughout the challenge and can ask our experienced team if you need
specific advice.
What if I can’t complete the challenge?
We will do everything we can to support you leading up to and during the challenge. It is a real test of mental strength
and stamina to complete the challenge and is no walk in the park. You will need to train hard beforehand ensuring you
complete at least one test weekend of walking eight hours per day for two days.
The team is split up into faster and slower teams and if you need to move between groups this will be accommodated
when practical. However if you find you cannot continue or have injured yourself there are set turn around points during
the challenge where a member of the safety team can return with any participants to the coach.
What happens if I’m injured?
Any outdoor activity has a risk however if you are injured the safety team has qualified first aid cover and equipment. The
team uses VHF radios and has a support vehicle at the bottom of each mountain that co-ordinates and incidents. The
safety team leader is there to ensure your safety and it is your responsibility to listen to their instructions.
How fit do I need to be?
The trek is both a mental and physical challenge. You will need to train beforehand and it is unrealistic to think you can
complete the event without any training. Once signed up you will receive further training advice and recommendations
on equipment e.g. walking boots. Ideally you need to be able to complete an eight hour walk on two consecutive days to
be ready for this challenge. It’s not about being ready now to walk the event but plan your training to be ready over the
coming months. If you have a health condition you should consult your doctor before taking part.
What clothing and equipment do I need?
Once signed up you will receive a full kit list but the main clothing and equipment is a pair of waterproof trousers,
waterproof jacket, 25-35L rucksack and well broken in walking boots. The weather in the mountains is unpredictable and
changes rapidly. If you do not have ankle high boots and full waterproofs you will be unable to take part in the challenge
for your own safety.
Where do we sleep on Friday and Saturday night?
Friday night we are walking through the night on Scafell Pike but most people will sleep as much as possible on the coach.
Saturday night we are in hotel twin room accommodation in Fort William with en-suite facilities.
How many people will take part and what are they like?
There will be around 50 men and women taking part aged 18+. There is no upper age limit but if you are over 65 you will
need a doctor’s note to state that there is no reason why you cannot take part. Some people come on their own or in
teams but as everyone supports each other friendships are formed quickly. There will be many different levels of fitness
within the group and initially the team will be equally split in two at the first mountain to manage and support everyone
fully.
I’m worried about raising £550 in sponsorship?
It may sound a lot but broken down into smaller chunks it is really achievable. We will send you a full pack on fundraising
advice and the Challenge Events Manager is on hand to chat about your ideas and support you. Most people start with an
online giving fundraising page that they can email to all friends and family which usually achieves at least half of the
target. It is then a great idea to hold some sort of fundraising event such as a summer BBQ where you invite friends to pay
£5 for a burger and drink. We have lots of fundraising materials for you to use and expert advice over the phone.
What happens if I don’t raise the sponsorship money?
It is best to keep in regular contact with the Challenge Events Manager so that they can support you fully but we ask that
you to attempt to raise £550 as it costs the charity approximately £186 per person to organise the event. We therefore
ask you to try to raise and pay to WellChild 80% of the target four weeks before departure. As long as you plan in advance
and don’t leave fundraising to the last minute you will hit the target!
