CAGED BIRD Kids enter in dark and get to their physical cages (one big one)- holding the position Lights up on cage- Dylan from his position: The free bird leaps on the back of the wind and floats downstream til the current ends and dips his wings in the orange sun rays and dares to claim the sky. Georgia- steps into cage But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage can seldom see through his bars of rage. Hannah- stands up and turns around His wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing. Raymond from his position: The caged bird sings with fearful trill of the things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom. Meghan- steps into cage The free bird thinks of another breeze and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn and he names the sky his own. Ruby- stands up and turns around But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing. EVERYONE: The caged bird sings with a freeful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom. LIGHTS OUT Lights up kids begin moving to spots in order: Mady, Tori, Meghan, Hannah, Cailyn, blythe, Mallory, Braeden, Braxton, alli, Lynsey, Maddie, Dylan, Elizabeth, alex, Jill, Jonathan, Ruby, Tatum, Anna, Raymond, Georgia, Harrison, Bailey When last person in place: TECHNOLOGY When music starts- movement begins, ending spots are for Rumor Has It Kids enter with cell phones- lights from cell phones only light on stage, kids enter to technology song young kids move off and older kids in place for song “Rumor Has It”- dance LIGHTS OUT SCREEN SHOWS PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS- Maddie, Alli and Mallory go to places “Hear Me Cry Out”- scene inside song Dr. Manicini (Jonathan)- Lyric, I need to speak to you about your test results. Lyric: Yes? Nicole: what? Victoria: (Mady) They said that you are past the point where there isn’t much more they can do. Jade: But they said that it was only a small problem. They said that we could fight this… they said… Allison: (Jill) I know sweetie Allison: I am Dr. Mancini, Allison, Victoria: so sorry. Victoria: Nicole Allison: Jade Dr. Mancini: Lyric. (BEAT) there are some things we can try, but it will be a long and very hard recovery. Victoria: I guess what I’m trying to say is you should fight for it with everything you’ve got, and I will be there every step of the way for everything this disease throws your way. Jade: I’ll fight it mom! I will be your strong little girl like you’ve raised me to be! Allison: sweetie um… Jade: yeah? Allison: Your father and I don’t think we can afford the extra care right now. I mean I’m already working three jobs trying to pay off your hospital bills as it is. Dr. Mancini, Victoria, and Allison: look, I have to go, but stay strong for me okay? They exit song continues. LIGHTS GO TO BLUE AT END OF SONG everyone moves to CAGE- Ruby and Georgia inside CAGE- Everyone says- GRIEF Georgia: (inside cage) Grief: a keen mental suffering or distress over affliction, loss, sorrow, or painful regret. Ruby- (bursts out of cage) Words. Every day you hear them. (as next lines are said- the CAGE is torn apart and kids move to their “Let it Be” places) Tori: They used to be sweet, like you could drink them, but now they hurt, like prickles. Braeden: And they stick, and when you turn your back on them more come. Cailyn: and you cannot brush them off. Olive: They only build up. Braxton: Sometimes you don’t hear them, and they don’t matter. Hannah: But now, everything matters. Meghan: It’s hard to explain, but they matter. Words matter. Everyone: GRIEF Tatum: You feel like you are a single grain of sand on a giant beach. Harrison: You feel as if you were blocked from the world around you. Anna: Grief can cage you in and change you. Bailey: through these changes, you turn into somebody that can face life. Lynsey: Even though it may seem as if it will take a lifetime to get through, grief will eventually pass. LET IT BE- younger kids are on stage floor, older kids are on the platform. 2nd weekend- Treston into place- PEACE dance BLACK OUT AFTER DANCE Kids back to stage form CAGE in dark- lights up on Cage- Dylan is inside cage Everyone: PARENTS (Dylan bursts out of cage and it explodes- “kids” go to different spots on the stage- maybe on stools?) Dylan: Moving? What do you mean moving? (voice over) I mean we are moving. Dylan: Why? (voice) We need a new start. Dylan: But my life is here. My friends. You can’t just uproot me like this. Voice: I’m sorry Evan. You’ll make new friends, start a new life there. New Voice: Hey honey, can you put these clothes away? Simon: Mom. Look at this awesome dirt bike! Voice: Simon, I’m done with this. Do what I asked. Put your clothes away. New Voice: Cassie! What is this? Maddie: Uh… my room. Voice: Where’s your floor? Maddie: Under all my stuff, duh. Voice: Clean this now. New Voice: Come on. You know this. Mady: clearly I don’t. Voice: You can do this. Mady: I can or I have to? New Voice: You are wanting to go where? Jill: There’s this party I want to go to. Voice: a party? What kind of party? Whos going to be there? How long is this party? Who’s taking you? Jill: I thought you would. Voice: That’s cute. New Voice: Son. You need a hair cut. Raymond: What?! Voice: You. Need. A. Hair. Cut. Raymond: No, I don’t. I don’t need a hair cut. You want me to get one. Voice: Yes. Which means you’re getting one. End of story. All Kids on Stage SCREAM. Music starts: 13 BLACK OUT- Intermission Kids form the cage in the dark. Mirrors are pushed out. LIGHTS UP- EVERYONE- PEERS Smile- movement on stage while Raymond does “To Be or Not to Be” soliquoy Song- SMILE- Meghan, Bailey, Jill, Lynsey BLACK OUT END OF SONG- kids in bullying scenes go to places LIGHTS UP- scenes begin- last scene is Braeden’s and he moves to down center and begins song- other actors enter Revolting Kids- Song/Dance BLACK OUT AFTER SONG Mirrors in place during black out Lights up on Anna, Alex, Mady, Blythe in front of mirrors. Anna: Insecure. Alex: Fat Mady: skinny Blythe: Blonde Anna: Brunette Alex: Beautiful Mady: Ugly Blythe: Intelligent.
