Dec. 8, 1942. W. POSTER ' 2,304,278 1 PAPER CUP , Filed Jan._9, 1940 ' INVENTORY ATTORNEYJW Pregame-,8 194.2 2,304,278 PAPER CUP William Poster, Brooklyn, N. Y., assignor to Uly Tulip Oyup Corporation, New York, N. Y., a cor poration of Delaware Application January 9, i940, Serial No. 313,051 2 Claims. (01. 229-15) surfaces of the ?ange i. The roll 8 is formed by This invention relates to one-piece paper cups, bending the pleated paper of the ?ange I sharply formed from substantially circular blanks; the upward at the meridian ‘I; then curling the paper cups having pleated side walls tapered down outwardly, downwardly, inwardly towards the wardly so that a quantity of them may be stacked lower surface of the ?ange, and then upwardly or nested one within another for the purpose of and inwardly so as to terminate interior of the storing or dispensing them from a machine. More particularly, the invention relates to ya novel structure of the upper or li-p portion of the cups whereby that portion provides greater com fort and ease of drinking when‘ engaged by the lips of the user. Furthermore, the novel struc bead. , _ While ‘in the preferred form the cup is shown with a hollow in the center of thebead, it is not the intention to thus limit the invention, for a solidly rolled bead may be used with equal advan tage. In short any method may be employed in‘ ture is formed, such as to render it very rigid even under unusual pressure. forming a lip portion having substantially the same exterior contour as that of Fig. 2. An object 'of this invention is to produce an Such a article possessing the foregoing desirable, useful 15 contour enables the user to grip the lip portion of the cup ?rmly and comfortably between his and structural advantages while at the same time permitting of rapid and economical production " upper and lower lip,‘ so that when the ?ange por tion 5 (conveniently spaced outwardly from the methods in their manufacture. ' , This invention consists in the novel features, - main side wall) is pressed against the lower lip, arrangements and combination of parts embodied 20 the junction 4 of the side wall and ?ange will by way of example in the article hereinafter de abut against the forwardmost tip of the lower lip _ scribed as illustrating a preferred form of the while the rest of the ?ange, touching and over lying the upper surface of the lower lip, extends invention, and the invention will be more particu larly pointed out in the appended claims. ' Further objects, features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following speci?ca tion and claims, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the cup ; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view show 30 ing in more detail the upper or lip portion of the cup viewed along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. ' Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawing, the cup shown is formed from a circular disc of relatively thin paper of a character well understood by those skilled in the art. The disc is folded, by well known mechanism, into cup form providing a substantially circular bottom I and pleated side wall 2. The pleats 3, commencing at the junction of to the bead ii, which presses down upon the inner vrim of the lower lip forming a seal between the cup and the lip. The portion of the bead offset above the upper surface of the ?ange 5 enables the upper lip of the user to grip the cup and, while holding it between the lips, press the lip portion down upon the lower lip to effect the above-mentioned seal formed by' the under sur face of the bead 6. Furthermore, the outwardly ?aring ?ange in combination with the particular formation of the bead provides improved rigidity at the lip of the cup and materially strengthens the cup side wall structure. Having thus described my invention with par-‘ ticularity with reference to a preferred embodi the bottom and side wall, are longitudinally co 40 ment of the same, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art, after understanding my invention, that extensive with the side wall which extends up changes and modifications may be made therein wardly with a slight outward inclination until it without departing from the spirit and scope of the reaches the point indicated as 4. At this ‘point invention, and I aim in the appended. claims to the sidewall 2 takes a relatively sharp outward ?are forming a ?ange-like lip portion 5, which 45 cover such changes and modi?cations as are with in the scope of the invention. will be designated hereafter as the ?ange portion What I claim is: of the lip. This ?ange extends upwardly and out wardly from the point 4 and terminates in a pro nounced head or rolled edge 6. ' - As will be noted in Fig. 2, the rolled edge 6 is substantially circular in cross section and is offset a substantially equal distance from the upper and lower surfaces of the ?ange portion 5 so as to provide a substantial overhang of the respectively ' 1.
