What's in Your iPad? Free or Low
Cost APPs for Everyday Use
SC 25 - 8:30 – 11:30am
April 30, 2016
Kimberly Gully, MS, CCC, CCM, CBIST
Objectives
• Identify appropriate everyday apps to
recommend to people they serve across the
ages.
• List a minimum of 10 relevant apps including
areas such as: memory, attention, visual and
auditory processing, voice and problem
solving/abstract reasoning
• List a minimum of 5 resources to locate free or
low cost apps to share with people they serve
Focus of Presentation
• Free, low cost and/or affordable apps
($5 or less)
• There are MANY apps that are advertised in
professional journals and mainstream
publications – we will NOT be focusing on
those as they typically have a cost greater
than $5 associated with them and you likely
already know about them!
How to Decide Which APP to Use
• No different than the criteria you currently
use to determine therapy materials
• Difference is that APPs are now available to all
• This course will focus on low or NO cost APPs
(less than $5)
Incorporating the iPad
• Treat it like any other tool, procedure or
process
• It takes time to learn and become proficient
• Find a mentor or colleague to assist you
• Read info from ASHA or blogs about APPS
Apps Demonstration
• The majority of this presentation will be hands
on interactive demonstration of apps.
• Participants are encouraged to ask for specific
types of apps during the demonstration
App Demo Requests
Examples:
I need an app for an aphasic patient.
(very difficult to assist you – too vague)
I have an aphasic patient that wants to work on
matching single words, pictures or words to
pictures.
(much easier to help you find what you are
looking for)
App Demo Requests
Examples:
Do you have any apps for autism?
(very difficult to assist you – too vague)
I am looking for an app that will help an
autistic student with basic social interactions.
(much easier to help you find what you are
looking for)
App Demo Requests
Examples:
What is your favorite app to use for
augmentative communication?
(very difficult to assist you – too vague)
What app do you recommend for basic
communication needs – person is at picture level?
(much easier to help you find what you are
looking for)

How to Access Links to APPs
• This handout contain links to the iTunes/App
Store for the apps presented during the live
demo
• Many times it is a challenge to access apps to
download without the exact match of the
name
• Further complicating this is that what the app
is called in the app store and what it is called
on the picture of the app are different!
How to Access Links to APPs
• To access the links (must be done from computer)
– Click directly on the picture of the app
– This will link you directly to the app store
– Select download and it will prompt you for your itunes account
info
– Download apps and the will be in your account – your device will
upload automatically if you have it set that way or you can go
into your library and upload apps onto your device manually
• NOTE: you may not be able to access the links from the
handout for the apps from your iPhone or iPad (sorry –
technical issue) 
