Multiplication 10 – Long
method
Multiplication 1 – Repeated Addition
6 x 7 = 42
First, draw a number line showing
7 lots of 6.
 Then add these up using repeated
addition.
 0 add 6 equals 6. 6 add 6 equals
12. 12 add 6 equals 18. 18 add 6
equals 24. 24 add 6 equals 30. 30
add 6 equals 36. 36 add 6 equals 42.
 So 6 multiplied by 7 equals 42.
32 x 19 = 608

First, multiply 32 by 9.
2 x 9 equals 18 (which is 1 ten and 8
units). 30 x 9 equals 270, add 10, equals
280 (which is 2 hundreds and 8 tens). So
32 multiplied by 9 equals 288.
 Then multiply 32 by 10. 32 x 10 equals
320.
 Finally, add the two products.
288 add 320 equals 608.
 So 32 multiplied by 19 equals 608.

Multiplication 2 – Repeated
Addition
Multiplication 9 – Short
method
14 x 7 = 98
52 x 9 = 468
First, draw a number line.
 Then partition 14 and multiply
each part by 7.
 10 x 7 equals 70. 4 x 7 equals
28.
 Finally, use the number line to
add the two products.
 0 + 70 = 70. 70 + 28 = 98.
 So 14 multiplied by 7 equals 98.

First, partition 52 in your head
into tens and units.
 Then multiply each part by 9.
2 x 9 equals 18 (which is 1 ten
and 8 units). 50 x 9 equals 450,
add ten, equals 460 (which is 4
hundreds and 6 tens).
 So 52 multiplied by 9 equals
468.

Multiplication 3 – Grid method
Multiplication 8 – Short
method
7 x 38 = 266
52 x 9 = 468
First, partition 38 into numbers which
are easier to multiply. Write each part in a
grid.
 Then multiply each part by 7.
 10 x 7 equals 70. 10 x 7 equals 70. 10 x
7 equals 70. 8 x 7 equals 56.
 Finally, add the four products.
70 + 70 + 70 + 56 = 266.
 So 7 multiplied by 38 equals 266.

First, partition 52 in your head
into tens and units.
 Then multiply each part by 9.
2 x 9 equals 18. 50 x 9 equals 450.
 Finally, add the two products.
18 add 450 equals 468.
 So 52 multiplied by 9 equals 468.

Multiplication 7 – Short
method
Multiplication 4 – Grid method
7 x 38 = 266
52 x 9 = 468
First, partition 38 into numbers
which are easier to multiply. Write
each part in a grid.
 Then multiply each part by 7.
30 x 7 equals 210. 8 x 7 equals 56.
 Finally, add the two products.
210 + 56 = 266.
 So 7 multiplied by 38 equals 266.

First, partition 52 in your head
into tens and units.
 Then multiply each part by 9.
50 x 9 equals 450. 2 x 9 equals 18.
 Finally, add the two products.
450 add 18 equals 468.
 So 52 multiplied by 9 equals 468.

Multiplication 5 – Grid Method
Multiplication 6 – Grid method
549 x 6 = 3294
23 x 17 = 391
First, partition 23 and 17 into
numbers which are easier to multiply.
Write each part in a grid.
 Then complete the grid using
multiplication. 20 x 10 equals 200. 20 x
7 equals 140. 3 x 10 equals 30. 3 x 7
equals 21.
 Finally, add the four products.
200 + 140 + 30 + 21 = 391.
 So 23 multiplied by 17 equals 391.

First, partition 549 into numbers
which are easier to multiply. Write
each part in a grid.
 Then multiply each part by 6.
500 x 6 equals 3000. 40 x 6 equals
240. 9 x 6 equals 54.
 Finally, add the three products.
3000 + 240 + 54 = 3294.
 So 549 multiplied by 6 equals 3294.
