Ted Wilson Ted Wilson graduated from the University of Utah in 1964. He received a master’s degree in education from the University of Washington in 1969. In 1983, he received an honorary doctorate of laws from Westminster College of Salt Lake City. Wilson was mayor of Salt Lake City from 1976 to 1986 and director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah from 1986 to 2003, when he retired. Wilson is the founder of the Exoro Group, an advocacy firm. In 2005 he was appointed founding director of the Barbara L. and Norman C. Tanner Center for Nonviolent Human Rights Advocacy. He is currently the director of the Utah Rivers Council, an environmental group that advocates healthy rivers and river enjoyment. Personal travel to India has allowed Wilson to study and understand the Indian system of government. He has made 13 trips to India, with six leading university student expeditions, and was instrumental in organizing the International Semester Program at the University of Utah. During those visits, he met with the Dalai Lama and led efforts to build housing for Tibetan refugees in Bir, a community hall in Leh, Ladhk, and a school in Kotwara. Wilson is married to City Weekly Editor Holly Mullen. Holly Mullen Holly Mullen has worked as a newspaper journalist for 27 years. She is currently the editor of City Weekly, an alternative newspaper in Salt Lake City. Before that, she was a general columnist for The Salt Lake Tribune. Later in the evening, you’ll visit the world-renowned Taj Mahal, covered in white marble. It took 22 years and over 20,000 workers and craftsmen to complete this rhapsody in stone. Though it appears to be perfect from almost any angle, it is the closeup marble inlay work that is truly astounding. Made of red sandstone, the city combines influences from both Hindu and Mughal architecture. Other inspiring monuments in Fatehpur Sikri are the Hiran Minar (which Akbar built in memory of his favorite elephant), Tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti, Birbal’s House, and the Diwan-i-Khas. Enjoy lunch at Laxmi Niwas Palace in Bharatpur. Later, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Jaipur. (B,L,D) Day 5—March 5, 2009 Jaipur This morning, proceed on a tour to Amer Fort, commencing with a photo stop at the Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds), a five-storied wonder with a spectacular pyramidal facade and overhanging windows with latticed screens, domes, and spires. Continue on to the ancient capital of Amer to see the fabulous Amber Fort and enjoy a tour of the Pink City, an “abode of rajahs.” Highlights of the tour include a visit to the City Palace Museum, the armory of Mughals and Rajputs, an art gallery with an excellent collection of miniature paintings, carpets, royal paraphernalia, and rare astronomical works in Arabic, Persian, Latin, and Sanskrit. Proceed to the awe-inspiring Jantar Mantar Observatory, a stone astrological and astronomical structure built by Maharaja Jai Singh in the 18th century.
