Sebastian Philomac was doing some amazing leaps over the high jump bar winning his age group with a 1.56m jump. Hurdles were introduced again this year from preschool age right through to the older students. The preschoolers enjoyed the smaller hurdles and as the heights increased great styles were witnessed along with some tumbles as well. Across the 2 days the sports houses Corella and Georgina battled it out to be this years winners. Georgina were in front by the end of day 1 but after some fantastic tug of war challenges from Corella (who won every age group) they managed to climb their way to the top and were announced 2016 winners. Page 2 Barkly Region School Sports NT Barkly Schools Girls Clean up at WillPOWER Carnival 400 Boys and girls comprising of 11 schools from, the Barkly Region and 8 from APY Lands recently battled it out on the footy field in the WillPOWER 9 a side Carnival in Alice Springs. Great sportsmanship and fine play was demonstrated by all students involved. Not only did every team get a specially designed jersey by students in their school, shorts & socks some even scored footy boots and they all received tickets to watch the big AFL match on the Saturday between Port Adelaide Power and Melbourne. Congratulations goes to “Tennant Creek High School Stars” girls team who won every game they played and were crowned the winners of the girls division with Alpurrurulum girls team being Runners Up. Hopefully next year we will see all schools in the Barkly Region attend this Fantastic Carnival. Thank you to all staff that went down to support all our students Barkly Region student designed jerseys. Very Impressive Page 3 Barkly Region School Sports NT SOFTBALL FEVER HITS BARKLY 6 .Two separate softball carnivals were held last week to select a Barkly Region School Sport Softball squad to compete in Katherine in Oct at the very first Inter Region Softball Cup Carnival. The South Barkly Region Cup was held in Ampilatwatja which teams from Alpurrurulam, Arlparra and Ampilatwatja battled it out over 2 days with great softball skills displayed by all teams involved. The Grand Final between Arlparra 1 and Ampilatwatja was a close one but Ampilatwatja managed to come out on top 7 runs to 5. It was great to see the mothers of the girls down there encouraging and giving the local team tips whilst they played. The victorious Ampilatwatja team did a drive around their community making sure all the community was aware of their win and to show off the grand cup they had just won. The North Barkly Region Cup was held here in Tennant Creek with teams from Elliott, Ti Tree and Tennant Creek High. Once again great softball was on show. The Tennant Creek High School girls improved greatly over the 2 days considering the girls only came together the day before the competition due to a school pulling out, well done girls. The Grand Final was a nail biter between Ti Tree and Elliott and at the end of game both teams were on 4 runs each. Both decided that they wanted to play another innings each to decide who was going to take home the grand cup. Ti Tree came out fighting and managed to slam home 9 runs and declare so Elliott could bat. Elliott had a runner on 2nd and first and their batter did a great hit only to be caught by Ti Tree, who then threw the ball to 2nd and then onto 1st and got the runners out before they could return to their base due to the caught ball ruling so a triple out and game was over. Page 4 Barkly Region School Sports NT Page 3 Barkly Region School Sports NT Bush Students Shine at Barkly Athletics Carnival Six bush schools travelled into Tennant Creek for the 5th Annual Barkly Bush Schools Athletics Carnival last week. Students from Alekarange, Ampilatwatja, Canteen Creek, Elliott, Neutral Junction and Rockhampton Downs battled against each other over two days competing in a variety of field, track and novelty events. This year hurdles were introduced and all students enjoyed participating in the new event and some good styles were displayed. Teachers and staff from BREO got to get into the action, competing in a sack race and then challenged the students in a Tug-Of-War. Much to the surprise of the staff the students won the first pull but the staff managed to get it together and they won the next two. Congratulations to Alekarange who were announced the winners at the end of the two day carnival along with the age champions. Whilst in Tennant Creek the students took advantage of being in town and visited the Di Vinci exhibition and were treated to a movie night at TCH performing arts center. A big thankyou goes out to TCP for allowing us to host the event on their oval, TCH for accommodating all the students and staff and providing some senior students to help out at and Anyinginyi Sports and Recreation who also provided staff for the carnival. Results from the carnival will be compared to other Athletics Carnivals run across the region and a Barkly Team will be selected to compete in Darwin at the NT Athletics Championships in August Page 6 Barkly Region School Sports NT Page 3 Barkly Region School Sports NT BIG SUCCESS FOR BARKLY BOYS .The Barkly Region School Sport U/12 Soccer team is celebrating its first championship success after they came away from the NT School Sport 12/U Soccer Championships in Katherine victorious. The team was composed of ten players from Tennant Creek Primary and High School, as well as Elliott School. With such a small squad travelling up, the boys were joined by an assortment of spare players from other teams on game days. With typical friendliness, sportsmanship and never say die attitude; the Barkly players quickly became the fan favorites of tournament. Unlike the teams from the bigger regions, our boys largely did not get substituted during the tournament nor have the chance to train all together in the lead up to the event. Their development as individuals and a group was magnificent. This was best illustrated by the turn around in results against Palmerston Power from day one to day three of the tournament. A 4-0 loss turned into a 1-0 win. Bring on 2017! A big thank you to Coach Edward Wilson from Canteen Creek and Manager Josiah Nugget from Elliott who helped guide these students to their victory whilst in Katherine.
