Why did the south Secede from the union? Was this a rebellion?
Reason for
Secession
1.Election of
Lincoln
Nov. 6 1860
Evidence for Reason
2. Slavery
(Human Rights)
"Declaration of the Immediate Causes which Induce
and Justify the Secession of South Carolina"
Lincoln’s election occurred right before
secession, the map shows that Southern states
did not vote for him, historical documents
show southern states hated him. (see graphic)
"[A]n increasing hostility on the part of the nonslaveholding States to the institution of slavery,
S. Carolina Secedes
has led to a disregard of their obligations, and
Dec, 20, 1860
the laws of the General Government have ceased
to effect the objects of the Constitution...
Government cannot endure permanently half
slave, half free." www.digitalhistory.uh.edu/

3. States Rights
4. Failed
Compromises
5. Economic
Inequality
6. Sectionalism
States wanted to make their own decisions,
even after the Dred Scott decision – stating
that slaves are property in every state – the
South still seceded because they wanted to
make their own rules and not have to share
rules with the North – they believed states
should be strong and not federal government.
The country made a 3/5 compromise in 1787,
a Missouri Compromise in 1820, another
compromise in 1850, and then a KansasNebraska Act to change the compromise
again, but neither side ever felt like they
really got what they wanted. P. 464
The North had more money, more factories,
more railroads, & more canals. The South
was a different economy – slaves, cotton,
heat, tobacco, if it’s not fair and equal, they
had to become separate. (yesterday’s lesson)
The South was already very different because
of slavery and cotton economy, it felt so
different it was a different culture even
though they spoke the same language they
had grown apart for 100 years and the South
was truly a different section, just look at the
evidence in the Election of Lincoln in 1860
where even the Democratic party split into a
Southern and Northern section.
Was this
reasonable?
Explain Why it was or
wasn’t reasonable
