The Story of
Saloman Sawdust
A DiSSerTATion by LuciAnne DeLong
Snapping Turtle Saloman Sawdust was first exposed to
storytelling by his granddaddy Homer. Granddaddy
lived on Salamander Creek, and Saloman and his
family lived with him. After a long day of working at
the sawmill, Granddaddy Homer — or Bud as he was
known around these parts — would sit Saloman on his
lap and spin him a tale. It gave him a good excuse to
rest!
Saloman loved the time he spent with his granddaddy.
He used to sit for hours and listen to Homer Bud tell all
kinds of stories about places he had been, people he had
met, and things he had seen. Saloman was so proud of
those stories that he wanted to share them with his
friends, but there was a slight problem. . . . You see, he
had quite a bit of a stutter, and he was extremely selfconscious about it. Bless His Heart! He asked his
granddaddy Homer to help him overcome his dilemma,
and Granddaddy told him that if he really wanted to
“beat it,” he could. Well, he really wanted to so this is
what Granddaddy Homer did. He would choose a story
to tell and then tell it in a sing-songy, rhymy way.
Then he would have Saloman repeat it back to him.
Homer would draw little pictures of his story’s characters to help Saloman remember them. Then he would
lick them and stick them on Saloman’s arms. Saloman
loved it! Why he loved it so much he told Granddaddy
that a day without stickers is like a day without
sunshine! Yessiree, that’s right!

It wasn’t too terribly long afore that stutter was all but gone, and Saloman could tell
those stories better than Granddaddy! Oh, was Saloman proud! Granddaddy told him
it was important to practice so every day after school he would share a story with his
friends. They loved his stories, and every day they practically begged for more.
Naturally Saloman gave them what they wanted!
Granddaddy has since passed on, but Saloman will never, ever forget him or the love
he shared. In honor of Granddaddy Homer “Bud” Sawdust, Saloman wrote down all of
Granddaddy’s stories on large elephant ears his mamma dried for him. Then he went
to a fancy publisher and asked them to print lots of books so other people can enjoy
those stories. He saved all the pictures Granddaddy drew and had them printed as
“stickers you don’t have to lick” in the back of all his books so you can have fun moving
them around throughout the stories like he did as a young lad!
If you enjoy Saloman Sawdust’s Snappy Stories half as much as he does, you’re having
a blast! So enjoy every one of them and be sure to share them with your friends, too!
