Present Progressive Tense about
The present progressive is used to express actions that are in progress. Think of the
verb forms in English that end in the present participle or gerund (-ing form) like
dancing, talking, writing and singing.

Verbs in the present progressive tense are formed by using the verb ‘estar’ along with the
present participle (gerund or -ing form) of the verb.
Formula = Estar + present participle form of verb
Let’s review the verb estar:
Estar – to be
Yo
Tú
Él
Ella
Usted
estoy
estás
está
Nosotros
estamos
Ellos
Ellas
Ustedes
están
To change a verbs to the present participle or the -ing form:
If the verb ends in:
Remove the ending (AR / ER / IR) from the
infinitive form and change it to:
-AR verbs
Remove AR and add -ando
-ER and –IR verbs
Remove ER or IR and add -iendo
So to use the present progressive tense use the verb estar and the present participle of the
verb.
For example:
Yo estoy bailando. (I am dancing.)
Tú estás escribiendo. (You are writing.)
Ella está hablando. (She is talking.)
Nosotros estamos jugando al tenis. (We are playing tennis.)
Ellos están trabajando en el jardín. (They are working in the garden.)
Some verbs have an irregular form:
Decir – diciendo (saying, telling)
Dormir – durmiendo (sleeping)
Leer – leyendo (reading)
Pedir – pidiendo (asking for)
Traer – trayendo (bringing)
