Gerunds
Meaning:
Gerunds are words that are formed with verbs, but act as nouns.
They are very easy to identify, as each gerund is a verb with an ‘ing’ attached
to it.

Because gerunds act as nouns, they can also do any of the noun jobs. Here
are some of the noun jobs:
SUBJECTS: Tell us whom or what a sentence is about. (Mary played
outside.)
DIRECT OBJECTS: Receive the action of certain action verbs. (Joe kicked
the ball.)
INDIRECT OBJECTS: Receive the direct object. (Joe kicked Mary the ball.)

OBJECTS OF THE PREPOSITION are nouns that follow a preposition. (Joe
kicked the ball to Mary.)
Hence, gerunds can function in any way that nouns can function.

Examples:
1) Swimming is fun.
Swimming is a gerund. It is formed from a verb (swim), it ends in -ing, and it is
acting as the subject of the sentence. It tells us what the sentence is about.
2) She loves reading.
Reading is a gerund. It is formed from a verb (read), it ends in -ing, and it is
acting as the direct object in the sentence. This means that it is receiving the
action of the verb ‘loves’.

To convert a verb into a gerund, just add ‘ing’ at the end of the verb.
Eg: I like eating French fries.
If the verb ends in the letter ‘e’, then add ‘ing’ to the verb after taking out
the letter ‘e’.
Eg: Come- coming, dance- dancing,……
