SIMPLE ROUTINE FIXES
SHINE OFF
Why does skin have that unattractive sheen in
summer? “Heat causes the natural layer of oil to
melt,” says Anna Field, of Sydney’s Paddington
Beauty Room. Add sweat and sunscreen, and it
develops a heavy top layer that can tempt us to
exfoliate more. “But this takes off too much of
the oil that forms the skin’s natural barrier.”
Instead, double cleanse to remove the build
up of nasties. And choose an SPF formulated for
the face. “One with antioxidants will give physical
and chemical protection, and also help prevent
ageing,” adds Field. A clay mask once a week
will absorb excess oil and reduce inflammation.
TRY Peter Thomas Roth Max Anti-Shine
Mattifying Gel, $43.95 (28g), sucks up shine, but
not natural moisture. Dermalogica Skin Refining
Masque, $59 (75ml), will smooth, not over-dry.
POOR PORES
Simply washing your sunglasses can reduce
breakouts. “The rims that sit on your skin all
day collect bacteria,” says Field. “That’s why you
end up with spots on your temples and cheeks.
A medicated face wash can help keep pores
bacteria-free, while an antibacterial cleanser is
great for the back and décolletage, where you’re
also prone to congestion.” Field recommends
lathering up the loofah in the shower daily.
TRY Shu Uemura Porefinist, $65 (150ml),
cuts through dirt and removes excess sebum.
COLOUR CRISIS
“Sun exposure and over-styling will fade hair,”
explains Joel Wallbank, a colourist at Sydney’s
Salon X. Chlorine has a staining effect, which
gives blondes that green tinge. “It mostly sits on
the surface of the hair, like a stain, so using a
good cleansing shampoo after a swim should
help remove it,” adds Wallbank. For brunettes,
regular colour treatments are the only way to
fight the fade. “A colour shampoo that imparts
brown will pump colour back up but, generally, it
won’t last as long in summer as it does in winter.”
TRY Molton Brown Indian Cress Purifying
Shampoo, $40 (300ml), helps prevent build-up.
Kiehl’s Color Preserving Shampoo, $28 (250ml),
moisturises without stripping colour.
FRIZZ FACTOR
Curly hair is prone to absorbing moisture in the
air and is naturally drier, so the extra washing in
summer creates unhappy locks. Lucy Cardoza, a
curl specialist at Melbourne’s Cast Salon, advises
limiting how often you wash it. “I try not to wash
mine more than once a week,” she says. “I use
a combination of smoothing serums, leave-in
conditioners and a texturiser with a bit of hold.”
Look for products with UV protection, she
advises. And saturate hair with fresh water before
diving into a pool. “Hair can only absorb so much,
so you’ll limit the amount of chlorine it takes in.”
TRY Aveda Smooth Infusion Style-Prep
Smoother, $39.95 (100ml), and Glossing
Straightener, $44.95 (125ml), help protect
from the effects of heat styling and ease frizz.
INGROWN OUTBREAK
Constant shaving and waxing can lead to
bumps, inflammation, sensitivity and even
infection as the hair grows back. Prevention is
key, says waxing specialist Corinne McManus
of Sydney’s Beauty Grace Clinic. “That means
exfoliation once the post-wax sensitivity
subsides, and definitely within 48 hours.”
Plus, wear loose clothing after treatment.
Two weeks after waxing, it’s time to step
up the sloughing. “Exfoliating gloves should be
part of your daily routine, but an intense cream
exfoliant helps,” adds McManus. If an ingrown
hair turns red and lumpy, seek advice from your
salon. “Skin on the legs and bikini area scars
easily and may even need a doctor’s attention.”
TRY Malin+Goetz Ingrown Hair Cream, $52
(15g), accelerates repair and sloughs away
dead cells, plus it calms and smooths skin.
SANDPAPER SOLES
“We tend to neglect our feet in general, but
especially in summer,” says podiatrist Melissa
Biedak, of Melbourne’s Medical Pedicure clinic,
who advises clients to moisturise feet twice a
day to prevent cracked heels and other issues.
While going at feet with a brush, mitt or scraper
may seem like a good idea, that can strip feet
of the natural moisture that protects them from
cracking. And a quick pedi won’t help if feet are
dry, sore or cracked, Biedak warns: “It’s much
more important to get them properly treated by
a podiatrist than just trying to make them look
pretty.” Sweaty thongs are tough on feet, so
Biedak recommends switching to a sandal that
cradles the foot, such as a Birkenstock style.
TRY Ecostore Body Butter, $21 (250g), is a rich,
oil-based treatment to slather on every night.
