A SET of gates commemorating those who gave their lives in the First World War have been installed at Stratford’s recently refurbished Guildhall. To mark the installation, the gates were blessed by the Reverend Canon Michael Hampel, Old Edwardian and Precentor of St Paul’s Cathedral, during a special ceremony on 21st May. The gates, installed in the building’s cross passage, were presented by the Old Edwardians’ Association as part of the First World War Centenary commemorations. They cost £5,000 and include a plaque honoring fallen First World War servicemen. On a practical level the gates will allow the Guildhall to be opened up for visitors, but prevent them from gaining access to the rest of the school. Bennet Carr, head master at King Edward VI School, said: “The installation of the gates is part of the restoration of the Guildhall, for much of the building’s history there had been gates there, the fittings have always been in place. “The original gates were probably removed around 100 years ago during the previous restoration of the Guildhall. “The outer gates facing onto Church Street were put up in the 1950s and were dedicated to those who fell in the Second World War, so it is fitting that the new inner gates are dedicated to First World War servicemen. I think it is right that they commemorate such an important event in history, not just for the school but for the whole country. “The gates include the seal of the Guild of the Holy Cross, which was created by taking a 3D scan of a wax seal and commissioning a company to cast it in bronze for us.” Drink driver given nine-year sentence ‘This tragedy could have been avoided’ – police By Simon Woodings [email protected] A DRINK DRIVER who caused the death of a motorcyclist in Wootton Wawen last month has been sentenced to nine years in prison. Craig Allen, aged 35, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty at Coventry Crown Court last Thursday, to causing death by dangerous driving and driving with excess alcohol. His sentence was reduced to six years for an early guilty plea. The charges relate to a head-on collision on the A3400 at Wootton Wawen on Monday, 25th April in which 27-year-old motorcyclist Robert Loach died. Allen provided a positive breath test at the scene with a reading of 155mg. The legal limit is 35mg. He also provided a positive drug swipe test for cocaine. PC David Bull said: “This was a tragedy which could have been avoided. The simple fact is that driving when you have been drinking or taking drugs is not just illegal it puts you and other road users at risk. “I hope that the sentence given out sends a message to all road users who might be tempted to drive after they have had a drink. It’s just not worth it.” After the tragedy, the family of Robert Loach paid tribute to a loving and wonderful son and doting father. Robert Loach, aged 27, of Birmingham Road, Redditch leaves a partner, Lian, and two children aged one and three. Lian said: “Robert was the world’s most doting father. He was my rock and my soul mate, the love of my life and I love him more than I could possibly say.” Robert’s mother, Sam, said: “Robert was my first born, a truly wonderful, inspirational person and most loving son.” Midweek Herald 2 Newsdesk: 01789 412819 Advertising: 01789 266261 E-mail [email protected] www.stratford-herald.com Follow us on Facebook and Twitter @HeraldNewspaper Garage Door SALE QUALITY ROLLER SHUTTER DOORS ELECTRIC REMOTE CONTROL LOCAL FAMILY RUN BUSINESS MAINTENANCE FREE ALL RUBBISH REMOVED TOTALLY SECURE 0800 112 3632 | [email protected] | www.sgdoors.co.uk Tuesday, 31st May, 2016 Boat Club members are hailed for efforts SEVERAL Stratford Boat Club members were recognised for their achievements at the club’s annual general meeting including an award for the life-saving actions of a member last year. The club this year has handed out a number of special Felix Awards, a legacy from the club’s past President Felix Babcock who gave so much to the club. These are tankards won by Felix Badcock during his long career rowing and over engraved with the winner’s name and award. The intention was to award the junior and the senior personality of the year but there was also a special award given to recognise a single action that had massive implications for the club and for the club’s members in particular. The Special Felix Award went to Will Smith for his brilliant and speedy actions in helping save the life of one of the club’s members who had capsized and stopped breathing. This club member has gone on to make a full recovery and is back on the river and competing to the delight Conrad Bird receives his Junior Felix Award. of everybody at the club. At the time Will wanted no fuss and no recognition but the club wanted to take the occasion of the AGM to mark a very special “Thank You” to recognise this great example to all. The Senior Felix Award went to Jane Hadland who has put in hours and hours of unpaid time for sorting out the club’s membership and general administration. All the club members’ enquiry emails get answered by Jane and she is also an active social member who is always ready to help. The Junior Felix Award went to Conrad Bird, for his all-round contribution on and off the water. Conrad Police appeal after bottles are thrown 452.9/52$2%!-3 INTO REALITY... Estelle Mancini, 30, was struck down by a mystery illness before Christmas after developing a niggling cough and pains in her side. Estelle was taken to Warwick Hospital in great pain, where doctors placed her in an induced coma so they could carry out tests. Doctors feared that they might not be able to save Estelle’s life as antibiotics were proving ineffective. In a last effort to help Estelle, she was transferred to Leicester Hospital where, after being hooked up to a specialist ECMO machine, it was determined that she was suffering with viral pneumonia which had turned to septicemia. Thankfully Estelle began to breathe for herself again and was transferred back to Warwick, though doctors were unable to prevent her losing her toes and the tips of three fingers, which had turned black. Estelle is currently in a wheelchair, unable to start physiotherapy due to an infection in her heels. Estelle’s uncle Steve Mancini said: “Estelle is a very strong woman and that certainly helps. At one point when she was really ill they called in all the family to the hospital, they didn’t think that she would see the next morning. There A NEW competition has been launched by Redwings Horse Sanctuary, to find the Young Redwings Fundraiser of the Year. Almost £10,000 has already been raised and over the weekend a local football team played a charity football match to do their bit for Estelle. Warwick Wanderers took on a Steve Mancini Eleven, at Racing Warwick FC. Steve added: “This fundraising has given her a new lease of life, she’s absolutely over the moon at the prospect of getting these prosthetic feet. “The support we have had with the fundraising has been unbelievable.” The next fundraising event for Estelle is a back to school night at the Wild Boar in Warwick on 25th June. For more information visit www.estellesstory.co.uk walk or ride, cake sale, or maybe even a horsey dress-up day. There will be two awards, one for Most Money Raised and one for Most Original Idea. The winners will feature in the Spring 2017 issue of the charity’s magazine for young supporters, Young Redwings, will receive a certificate plus a year’s sponsorship of the Redwings Adoption Star horse or donkey of their choice. Head of fundraising Gemma Walpole said: “Our young supporters are an inspiring bunch who always have loads of brilliant ideas to raise money for our rescued horses and ponies. “These awards are our way of shouting about the great fundraising our young supporters do, and saying a big thank you for all their help and support.” Anyone who would like to enter the Young Redwings Fundraiser of the Year competition, can download a fundraising pack and entry form from www.redwings.org.uk/youngfundraiser. The Shakespeare Hospice receives only around 7 per cent funding from the Government, making it the lowest funded hospice in the whole of the UK. Kate Hall, head of clinical services, said: “The hospice is a fantastic cause and relies almost solely on donations to keep delivering vital care to the local community. Without this support, we wouldn’t be able to provide expert and specialist care to those living with a life-limiting illness, whether it be here at the hospice, or in the comfort of their own home.” The Shake it Purple campaign was launched on Thursday and runs up to the big fundraising day on the 24th June where the hospice will be holding an outdoor event in Kenilworth. Encouraging everyone to get involved, Vikki Calcutt, head of income generation added: “Fundraising doesn’t have to be boring! “The success of campaigns such as Red Nose Day and Children in Need, show us that we can have all kinds of fun raising money and it would be lovely if people could show their support in an enjoyable way, for a charity that is close to the hearts of the local community.” To get started and support the hospice people need to register for a free fundraising pack which includes a bucket and a tin or money box to collect donations. “Whether it be in the office, at school or at home, everyone can do their bit for A SELECTIVE, EFFECTIVE SOLUTION TO YOUR MARKETING NEEDS Leaflet distribution with the Midweek Herald and Stratford Herald UPDATE AND ADD VALUE The choice of replacement windows and doors are endless, take a look at some of the styles available to find your inspiration £1300 ...NOW JUST £850 FULLY FITTED Shirley Wythall Monkspa Street th Earlswoo d Woo oodd End Dear Bill, Yesterday I had a new front door supplied and fitted by you. The station is being built by the appointed contractors, Keirs with full support from Aston Martin and JLR who are working in partnership with the Service to ensure they are able to make the best use of the site. The new build will cost £760K and has been funded through DCLG Transformation grant funding. The new station will provide crews with a great location from 5 Midweek Herald and to incidents in and around the south of the county. It will also provide them with a great base to carry out more risk reduction work, which will help to keep Warwickshire communities safer. Talking about the new station, chief fire officer, Andy Hickmott said: “We are delighted that the new build is underway. “The location is great for access to the south of the county and the pilot for a Gaydon response point has proven a real success, so we know it will improve our resilience, increase community safety and ensure that we have the right cover for when we need it the most.” Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, Councillor John Horner said: “A new station is great news for the community of Warwickshire. It has been built to meet the current needs of the population and to enhance our response in the south of the county. As a public service we have a duty to provide the best pos- shire and I believe that this new station will help us to achieve that.” Warwickshire County Councillor Matt Western, Chair of the council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee said: “I am really pleased that the work on the new station is now underway. It will be a great asset to the communities of Warwickshire and will further enhance our response to incidents in and around the M40 area and our community fire safety work within local communities.” Call the newsdesk on 01789 412819 Established 1976 All vehicles on offer have MOT and a parts and labour warranty. (Submitted photo) Learning takes flight YOUNGSTERS at Winchcombe Farm Day Nursery in Upper Tysoe have literally ‘grown wings’ while studying the life cycle of butterflies. Children at the nursery have been watching how three caterpillars formed themselves into pupas, also known as a chrysalis, and then emerged as adult butterflies. Winchcombe Farm Day Nursery Manager Rachel Giorgio said: “This was a fun activity aimed at helping the children under- stand life cycles. We successfully hatched three butterflies using a special kit that made the whole process interactive and very visual for young children to follow. “We’ve been looking at the caterpillars each day and talking about how they’ve changed and what is different about them as they develop. The children have been very excited about releasing them from their net today and we waved them goodbye.” We cut hair, not corners. We know that your hair really matters. The Danger Comes in Many Forms campaign has been set up by Warwickshire County Council to prevent this valuable information falling into the hands of fraudsters. Research shows that consumers often inadvertently give consent to receiving marketing by post or telephone, perhaps not noticing the small print about how information will be shared. Warwickshire County Councillor, John Horner, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, said: “Every week, Warwickshire Trading Standards is bombarded with complaints from consumers who have received fraudulent phone calls, bogus e-mails and scam post.” “Trading Standards Officers are already working with some of the county’s most vulnerable and elderly residents to stop unwanted communications.” The council recommends people follow tips to prevent becoming victims. Among the advice issued is for residents to be wary of marketing surveys, questionnaires, competitions and prize draws and to remove your name and address from 192.com and similar UK directories. (20 mile radius of Stratford upon Avon) DANCE students from Stratford-upon-Avon College have made it through to the final performance of a newly-launched national dance choreography challenge. ‘Rambert Elements’, introduced this academic year by the world-renowned Rambert dance company, is a challenge designed to raise the profile of choreography in secondary schools and colleges across the UK. Six regional performances took place earlier this year, with one group from each being invited to perform at the national finals. Having been chosen winners of the Midlands heat at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham on 29th February, the Stratford students will now compete in the 2016 National Showcase in London on Tuesday, 28th June, where they will be accompanied by the Rambert Orchestra. Stratford Level 3 Dance student Hannah Medley, 16, commented: “I literally screamed when I found out we were through to the final. “It’s one of my dreams to perform in the West End and now it’s going to happen. It’s overwhelming – a once in a lifetime opportunity. “The other groups were really good but I was so pleased with our choreography. We obviously had what Stratford College students will take part in a national dance challenge. Rambert were looking for!” The aim of ‘Rambert Elements’ is to give students the chance to create and perform an original dance piece with help from Rambert’s leading choreographers, who produced ‘toolkits’ for the participating groups. Each toolkit contained ideas including a theme – complete with title and suggested sources of inspiration – a piece of music, sequences of movement demonstrated by Rambert dancers and some helpful tips from the Rambert choreographer. Kath Waters, Dance lecturer at Stratford-upon-Avon College, is extremely proud of her group of young dancers. She said: “I’m delighted for them – they have worked incredibly hard and thoroughly deserve their place in the final.” For more information on any of Stratford-upon-Avon College’s courses, please visit www.stratford .ac.uk or call the college on 01789 266245. The Psychoactive Substances Act will provide a blanket ban on the production, supply and importation of psychoactive substances — that is any substance intended for human consumption that is capable of producing a psychoactive effect. Legitimate substances, such as food, alcohol, tobacco, nicotine, caffeine and medical products are excluded. The legislation will fundamentally change the way police forces tackle these substances and will make new drugs that appear on the market illegal quicker than ever before. Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police will be policing the act in a practical and proportionate manner, as well as placing a By Simon Woodings [email protected] great emphasis on an educational and preventative approach, along with partner agencies. Detective Chief Inspector Ally Wright, business lead for drugs for the alliance, said: “We are committed to preventing the harm caused by illegal drugs and this legislation gives us new powers to tackle psychoactive substances. “The effects of these substances can be devastating, even fatal. “Users can never be sure of exactly what they contain, the side effects they could have or what longterm damage they could cause. We would urge people never to even consider taking them. “We will take action where we find people committing offences under this act. Punishments range from a prohibition notice, which is a formal warning, to seven years in prison.” Officers have been given powers to stop and search people, vehicles and vessels and enter and search premises in accordance with a warrant, and to seize and destroy psychoactive substances. Advice and support can be found at www.talktofrank.com People who have information about the supply of psychoactive substances are encouraged to contact them by calling 101, or this information can be passed on anonymously by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or by visiting www.crimestoppers-uk.org Pupils are great sports for charity PUPILS at Thomas Jolyffe Primary School, in Stratford, raised almost £3,000 for the NSPCC and Sports Relief. Youngsters at the school, in Clopton Road, raised £2,223 for the NSPCC’s Speak Out Stay Safe Programme. The programme visited the school to make sure the children have the knowledge they need to stay safe from abuse. Infants carried out a sponsored skip or throwand-catch for one minute, Year Three took part in a variety of Chinese games, Year Four raised funds by doing country dancing, and Years Five and Six completed a sponsored one-mile run or walk. In total, £710 was raised for Sport Relief, when youngsters donated £1 for dressing up as a sports star for the day, and parents and children made cakes. Pupils also played Beat the Goalie and a game of Guess Where The Ball Is, organised by PE apprentice Kyle Nicholls. Its survey found that, while more than 23 per cent remain undecided about the new technology, just three per cent of respondents were considering swapping the pump for the plug. Despite the potential financial and environmental benefits of owning an electric car, and the increasing rollout of infrastructure, more than 73 per cent of the 1,784 motorists surveyed by Flux, which specialises in providing cover for modified and unusual vehicles, said that they were not planning to buy one. These figures represent only a small rise in interest since a 2012 survey by the broker found that just two per cent of motorists were considering switching to an electric car, with 28 per cent undecided. Gerry Bucke, general manager at Flux, said: “Many of the 1,785 people who took our survey said that they felt electric cars, or at least hybrids, would one day be commonplace on our roads, but most thought that there were still many hurdles for manufacturers to jump through before that happened. “Despite an increased number of charging points in the UK, many motorists still suffer from range anxiety, which is something which won’t disappear until chargers are as widespread as petrol stations, charging is as quick as filling up, and electric cars can offer similar ranges to current vehicles. “Despite the government grant, new electric cars still tend to cost more than their petrol or diesel-powered cousins, which remains an issue for many, as do the supposed environmental benefits. People remain unconvinced about the practicality of the technology as it stands, as well as whether the cars are as green as manufacturers claim.” WANTED CARS BOUGHT FOR CASH 2005 ONWARDS Don’t Part-Exchange without phoning us! Melanie Betts had suffered from chronic intermittent Achilles Tendinopthy for several years but it flared up disastrously at the World Championships in Chicago last September and she only managed to finish in 39th place; despite finishing the bike leg in around 15th place. Now, after being one of the first British athletes to undergo stem cell technology treatment, the 49year-old is back competing for Team GB in the European Championships on 29th May in Lisbon, having taken part in her first triathlon in Tewkesbury last week. She’s aiming for the European Half Ironman Championships in Austria at the start of September as her main event this year and the World Long Distance Champi- onships in Oklahoma at the end of September and considers herself a podium contender in the 2017 World Championships in Rotterdam. Betts is married to Andrew Clarke who farms at Abbots Morton near Alcester. The couple have two children, Grace aged nine, and Isobel aged six. She told us about her amazing recovery and the relaunch of her athletics career. She said: “I’m a former Team GB physiotherapist and currently run practices at Atherstone and the leading Wildmoor Spa and Health Club in Stratford. “I was treating the founder of the club when I learned he is also a director of CT Ltd Therapy which happened to be conducting research into stem cell therapy for Achilles tendinopathy. I managed to get on the trials in Greece and this involved me flying there twice and self-treating at home. “Tenocytes are the building blocks of tendons where the muscle joins onto the bone. I had to rub a gel into my leg which the tendon absorbed. “The gel contains growth fac- tors in a platelet lysate gel called TendoncelTM. “These are isolated platelet growth factors reconstituted within the cellulose derivative gel. The growth and repair of the tendon is encouraged — resulting in reparation and rebuilding of the collagen matrix or the body within the structure of the tendon itself. “Over a three-month period I went from not being able to run at all to full run-training. I achieved results in a very short space of time, less than four weeks, on a chronic problem which had been on and off for ten years. “Within the first week to ten days I started slow jogging and then, on day 21, I was back in Greece and I ran five miles along the waterfront there before my final reading. “So I’d gone from not running at all back to a decent pace over five miles in three weeks. I had to send photos and measurements of my leg twice a week. I was the only athlete taking part in the trials. “Since Christmas I’ve been racing pain free and winning local and regional events again.” Melanie Betts pictured with children Isobel and Grace. Johnson is top of the class WARWICK’S Andrew Johnson rode his own Quintons Ernest to a coveted place at the pretigious Horse of the Year show. Johnson came out on top of the cob class at the SEIB Insurance Broker’s Search for a Star 2016 HOYS qualifier held at Houghton Hall in Cambridgeshire on 15th May. The 24-year-old’s full Irish Draught gelding, known as Ernie, was originally bought as a winter project to work on whilst Johnson’s other horse was injured. “He never recovered, so Ernie stayed,” explains Andrew, who works as a farrier. The gelding has overcome a confidence crisis to make it to the top spot at Houghton. “He was very timid to begin with,” said Johnson. “We came to Search for a Star last year and he was pulled in top, but he spooked with the ride judge. He wasn’t ready but he has really grown up now.” Andrew hopes to start jumping Ernie, whose favourite treat is fresh raspberries, later this year. He will aim the cob at the Irish Draught Championships again and hopes to try some Royal International qualifiers.
