THIS CLASS ADDRESSES THE GOALS FOR GENERAL EDUCATION IN LANGUAGE IN THESE FIVE

4. FR300 introduces more elements of French culture to the student.
5. FR300 develops oral comprehension and production of French.

Class policies for Ramsey
Examens: You are responsible for showing up on time to take the exam with your class. If unexpected
circumstances occur, you need to tell me before the test, and if I decide that you have a legitimate excuse, we
will determine a time to take the exam later, but this will only occur in dire emergencies.
Devoirs et interrogations: Homework assignments will be given regularly and may be collected. If I do
want them handed in, they are due at 5:00 p.m. on the day for which they were assigned. Because the due date is
well after the end of class time, late assignments (from 5:01 on) will be corrected but assigned a grade of 0. You
must do this work individually, consulting only with me if you need help. You might have quizzes on
Vocabulaire, other material from the chapter at hand, or on Candide.
Compositions: The provisions about deadlines for homework also apply to compositions. Unless
otherwise specified, you must do this work individually, consulting only me or someone I designate. You will
be given the chance to correct a draft version of your second composition with your teacher before you hand it
in for a grade.
Récitation: You will memorize your favorite piece from Candide, and it should be about 100 words in
length. The grade will depend on your explanation of the context or importance of the text within the novel,
your accurate memorization, the quality of your pronunciation, and the dramatic interpretation of the text.
Présence en classe et participation: Class attendance is crucial to learning a language since it is the
closest situation to language immersion available in a university setting. Please respect the starting time of each
class as well. It is disruptive and unfair both to the professor and the class when students ENTER OR
LEAVE the classroom during the class period. Come to class with tissues if you need them.
Concerning absences, you are granted 3 "graced" absences, excused or unexcused, after which you will
lose a third of a grade from your grade for Présence en classe et participation for every further absence
(lowering from B to B-, for example). Cut warnings will be issued at the instructors’ discretion.
Although this grade depends mainly on being in class, you may improve it by participating eagerly in
class and coming to French Table on Mondays (McClurg Meeting Rooms ABC, 12:00-1:00 p.m.) and soirées at
the Maison Française.
Extra credit: For every pair of appearances you make for 30 or more minutes each at the Maison
Française or Table Française, I will replace one lower quiz or homework grade with an A.
