This course will prepare you for productive involvement in community service, college activities, and civic governance. Additionally, this course will teach you to be analytical of yourself, apply leadership ideologies to all aspects of your life, as well as provide several assignments that will serve as long term training tools. Learning Outcomes When you successfully complete Social Science 58 will you will be able to: -Define Leadership -Comprehend the various parts of leadership -Apply various parts leadership ideologies to your personal, academic, and professional lives. Classroom Environment This class is designed for you. The intention is learn through participation, activities, presentations, and some lectures. Student’s participation in class activities and discussions is highly encouraged as it adds to the class environment. In this course you will get from the class what you put into it. The assignments for this course on not set up to just get done but will challenge you to be reflective and insightful. Students who are typically the most successful and find enjoyment in this course plan for assignments and are prepared for class each day. Procrastination, completing assignments at the last minute, or not following through with group members on assignments not only effect ones grade but are signs of underdeveloped leadership skills. 1 In this class the hope is to have an environment that is accepting, tolerant, safe, and welcoming to all. Should you need help in any part of the course, if there is an obstacle that is preventing you from being successful, or if you are in need of any special accommodation please reach out to me for assistance. Because the class will represent a diversity of individual beliefs, backgrounds, and experiences, every member of this class is asked to please show respect for every other member of this class. As being a part of a leadership course I ask that you keep in mind the need to develop your leadership skills, among them are the following: Please be in your seat ready to begin class at the start time. Please attend all classes, occasional absences and tardies are understandable put please do not make it a regular occurrence. I do not drop students for absences or tardies. However, excessive absences and tardies are not a good display of proper leadership skills. Absences on any presentation dates will impact your grade. Please come to class ready to learn. Complete required readings and outside activities on time. Please bring all necessary course materials such as required books, handouts, and writing supplies. Please when responding to classroom questions, display courtesy for others by not interrupting another student or the instructor. Please, unless part of an assignment, refrain from the use of technology in class (i.e. cell phone, tablets, laptops, etc.). Presentations Class Activity (200 Points) Most days there will be a class activity that all students are expected to participate in. The only exceptions are days when presentations are voluntary and for that the class activity is extra credit. Chapter Videos (200 Points) Each Group will be assigned two chapters from Developing the Leader Within. Groups will put a video that will be presented in class. Students will right a one page summary of each presentation. Fork in the Road (100 points) When we examine our past and ponder out future there comes a point where we come to a fork in the road. If we go one direction we move towards the negative, the past, our same failures or setbacks. If we choose another direction we move towards the positive, our future, and achieving our dreams. Shedding My Armor (100 Points) In this activity you are to create a shield that represents the parts of your life where ego, lack of humility, or the need for recognition prohibit you from being successful. Mission Statement (100 Points) Every great organization has a mission statement they follow. Great leaders have their own personalized mission statement. You will develop your own personalized mission statement. Legacy Statement (100 Points) When you have served your purpose on this earth and it’s time to ride off into the sunset, what will be the legacy you have left behind? For this assignment, you will write what you believe that legacy might be. 8 Mid Term Movie Project (300 Points) ANY STUDENT WHO FAILS TO COMPELTE THE MID TERM WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PASS THE CLASS Each group will select a movie they feel is a sound leadership film. The movie must be approved by the instructor by September 14. The group will put a creative 20 minute presentation together for the class. PRESENTATION DATES: October 26, October 31, November 2 ALL GROUPS MUST BE READY TO GO EACH DAY! Final Exam (300 Points) ANY STUDENT WHO FAILS TO COMPELTE THE MID TERM WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PASS THE CLASS Each group will put together a creative presentation 15 minutes in length that highlights what they have learned in class. FINAL: Wednesday December 14 @ 10:00am-12:00pm 9
