Director’s Message I am delighted to greet readers of CeMIS’ first biannual newsletter! CeMIS was inaugurated in the fall of 2010, and in this very short period of just over a year, I and my colleagues have faced the exciting and demanding task of putting into action, from the ground up, our collective vision of what the study of South Asia should comprise. We represent the fields of history, religious studies, political science, anthro-­‐
pology, development economics and anthropology of public health, and we’ve found common ground under the broad rubrics of inequality and diversity as guiding concept-­‐metaphors for the study of modern India. It is with pleasure that I can report we now have in place teaching programs in Modern Indian Studies at the undergraduate and MA levels, a growing number of PhD students in the humanities and social sciences, a wide array of research projects being pursued both by individual faculty and larger teams, and a weekly colloquium. We’ve fit as much about all of this as we could into these pages, but I urge you to visit our website for a more comprehensive picture of our activities. I cannot do justice to all the events we have held in the last year, or which we have planned for the upcoming semester. Let me just name a few. Last fall, the founding editor of Navayana Press, S. Anand, discussed the politics and aesthetics of producing a graphic novel of B. R. Ambedkar’s life, illustrated by Gond artists; the novel Bhimayana has gone on to garner awards and international recognition. In January we screened CeMIS Fellow Lalit Vachani’s gripping documentary account of political street theatre, The Play Goes On, at the local art cinema. And last July we took students from Germany on an excursion to Delhi, where they visited locales as varied as an automotive manufacturing plant—then on strike—and the bylanes of the stratigraphic old city. We held a weekly seminar series, and a CeMIS lecture series where last term Profs. David Washbrook, Sonia Bhalotra and Jonathan Parry gave stimulating presentations of their current research. We have an exciting semester of talks ahead and a summer school at which the renowned journalist P. Sainath will speak. When the papers pile up on my desk, I remind myself that for a fledging venture to manage all this in a year, it’s to be expected that it takes some work! Of course what will ensure the continued growth and excitement of intellectual life at CeMIS is the participation of our friends and colleagues the world over. The TRG will have its main office in New Delhi. Research will be conducted, however, at all five institutes involved and at all three locations (Delhi, Göttingen, London). TRG members at all levels (doctoral students, postdocs and principal investigators) will circulate between the three research hubs and participate in annual summer schools and conferences. As high quality PhD training is one of the key tasks of the TRG, the PhD studentships are limited to ten in number, fully funded for four years and open to international competition. PhD students will receive their main supervision at one of the participating institutions, but will also avail themselves extensively of resources at the others in the course of their studies. The first of two rounds of application will be advertised in April 2012. The TRG will also support fellowships for senior scholars—who need not belong to the participating institutions—working on issues related to education and poverty. The fellowship will allow them to conduct relevant research at one of the three research hubs. The first round of applications will be advertised towards the end of 2012. The TRG is unique both in terms of its highly focused research objectives and in its extensive but tightly knit transnational structure. It represents a bold attempt to address a serious drawback in the German higher education system. In terms of finding excellent research partners in the humanities and social sciences in ‘non-­‐
traditional cooperation countries’ like India, German universities have significantly lagged behind their international competitors. Seeing this venture through and opening up a new field of research relating to a crucial aspect of India’s highly uneven development—
these are the challenges that lie ahead. Now online: ILO India monthly reports 1929-­‐1969 In 1919, India was one of the 42 ‘founding members’ of the International Labour Organization (ILO). Between 1929 and 1969, the ILO’s ‘regional office’ in New Delhi prepared detailed monthly reports on Indian labour, social and economic policy that are now an important research resource for historians and social scientists. In a joint effort, historians at CeMIS in Göttingen and of the ILO’s ‘Century Project’ in Geneva have now digitized these reports. A searchable finding aid is under preparation and will be completed by the end of 2012. 2 May 2012 CeMIS Lecture Series / Inaugural Lecture: Prof. Rupa Viswanath On 2 May 2012, Prof. Rupa Viswanath will give her inaugural lecture at Göttingen University addressing the question "Is Religion to Difference as Caste is to Inequality?" The talk will consider how inequality and difference have been construed in administrative language and political talk in colonial and postcolonial India, and what consequences that has for policies targeting subordinated groups. Prof. Viswanath is Chair of the Indian Religions Research Group at CeMIS. Prior to arriving in Göttingen in the Spring of 2011, she taught in the South Asia Studies Department at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research and writing address the practices of secular regimes, histories of slavery in colonial South Asia, the political economy of caste, and the historical dynamics of religious authorities and institutions. News from the Research Groups Research groups constitute the basic elements of CeMIS’s interdisciplinary research structure. Most of our research groups are in the midst of a dynamic process of growth. We will continuously report on their development in this section of our newsletter. Our series begins with an account of CeMIS’s ‘anthropological wing’. Society and Culture of Modern India This research group, chaired by Prof. Patrick Eisenlohr, will have two main areas of investigation. Public culture, media consumption and circulation in contemporary India, where entertainment, advertising, as well as political and religious mobilization intermingle, comprise the first focus. The link between mediation and religious mobilization is also an important topic for scholars in the research group. Issues of ethnic and religious diversity, especially in contemporary urban India, are the second focus of investigation. Specifically, we examine the intersection of everyday, emotional, and practical aspects of diversity and coexistence with the state-­‐sponsored modes of regulating diversity in India. This is critical to understanding not only the marked ethnic, caste-­‐based and religious diversity that India is often taken to stand for, but also the multiple ways in which such diversity is lived. For both these areas of research transnational connections—migratory movements and circulation, media flows, and ties of religious affiliation and authority—are of utmost importance and are a distinguishing feature of the group’s research. Both these research areas afford many opportunities to collaborate with colleagues not only in anthropology and sociology but also in a wider range of disciplines including religious studies, media studies and political science, and beyond single national foci. Through Prof. Eisenlohr’s affiliation with the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Ethnic and Religious Diversity, the Göttingen connection of the group has already been in place for some time. Together with the Institute, he is engaged in a project on ‘Urban Religion in Mumbai,’ has hosted a connected conference on ‘Religious Aspirations in Global Cities’ with Arjun Appadurai and Peter van der Veer at Utrecht University, and co-­‐hosted a seminar series on ‘Postsecular Publics’ with the Center for the Humanities at Utrecht University and the Jackman Humanities Institute, University of Toronto. Prof. Eisenlohr is also currently directing a research project on ‘Islam and Multicultural Citizenship: Practical Morality and Pluralism in Muslim Public Spheres’ funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) with a focus on the Indian Ocean region. Anthropology of Public Health Our research group is currently engaged in ‘Beyond the Numbers’, a five-­‐ year study of maternal mortality in northern India. We focus on analysing the maternal death reviews that the Indian government began conducting across the country in 2012. The central research goal is to develop an improved analysis of the local, precipitating factors for individual maternal deaths in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) State. The project builds upon Professor Kim Gutschow’s previous research on the social and cultural factors that influence maternal health and health-­‐seeking behaviors for women in rural India. We are investigating ongoing policy initiatives that seek to reduce high maternal mortality in so-­‐called ‘Low Performing States’ like Jammu and Kashmir. In 2011, the team began collecting baseline data that will help frame the project in the upcoming years, and Professor Gutschow presented the findings of the Research Group at the official launch of the Goettingen International Health Network in Goettingen and at the ‘7th European Congress on Tropical Medicine & International Health in Barcelona’ (http://www.ectmihbarcelona2011.org/session.asp?co
di=34z) where she and other team members are pursuing collaborations concerning global health and medical anthropology. Future plans for the research group include possible EU and India collaborations with CRESIB (Barcelona Centre for International Health Research), IMMPACT (Initiative for Maternal Mortality Program Assessment) at the University of Aberdeen, the Department of Social Medicine and Community Health at JNU in New Delhi, and with other members of Goettingen University such as Professor Stephan Klasen (Economics), Professor Martin Tamcke (Theology), and post-­‐docs Elena Gross (Economics), and Julia Inthorn (Medical Ethics).
