Course Description
Chinese brush painting and calligraphy dates back some 5000
years ago and involves bold and expressive strokes to portray the
essence of a given subject. This course will teach you the
fundamentals of Chinese brush painting. Learn the calligraphic
strokes used in brush painting, how to hold the Chinese brush and
load it with multiple tones of ink and watercolour. It will teach you
various traditional and contemporary techniques in order to paint
Chinese/Asian subjects. No experience necessary
Course Outline
Lesson 1: Basic Strokes, Yin Yang Carp
Learning Objectives:
1. to be introduced to the Four Treasures
2. to learn how to hold the Chinese brush
3. to learn and practice the basic strokes used in Chinese painting
4. to use a variety of ink tones in creating a work
5. to paint a basic fish in minimalist strokes
Lesson 2: The Three Friends - Bamboo
Learning Objectives:
1. to be introduced to the bamboo in Chinese culture.
2. to learn how to load the brush with multiple ink tones.
3. to practice the bone stroke and the hook stroke.
4. to learn and practice fish tails and flying goose leaf formations.
5. to paint the bamboo in a classical style.
Lesson 3: Giant Panda and Bamboo
Learning Objectives:
1. to be introduced to the Giant panda in Chinese culture.
2. to learn how to paint facial details first.
3. to bleed ink into water to create a furry animal effect.
4. to use colour as a contrast to the inkwork.
5. to paint the Giant panda on a rock with bamboo.
Lesson 4: The Three Friends - Plum Blossom and sparrows
Learning Objectives:
1. to be introduced to the plum blossom in Chinese culture.
2. to learn how to load the brush with three colours.
3. to use a combination of wet and dry strokes for the branches.
4. to paint the plum blossom with some flying sparrows.
Lesson 5: The Three Friends - Pine Tree
Learning Objectives:
1. to be introduced to the pine in Chinese culture.
2. to learn and practice how to paint the trunk and branches with
a dry brush.
3. to learn and practice how to paint the pine wheels.
4. to paint the pine tree.
Lesson 6: Goldfish and Water lily
Learning Objectives:
1. to be introduced to the goldfish in Chinese culture.
2. to learn and practice how to load the brush with multiple
colours.
3. to learn and practice how to paint waterlily pads with wet
strokes.
4. To learn to paint lily flowers and colour loading.
5. To paint the goldfish and waterlilies.
