Estimating Mulch or Loam in Yards
1. Length x Width = Square Feet
2. Convert Depth to decimal:
1” = .08 feet 4” = .33 feet
2” = .16 feet 5” = .42 feet
3” = .25 feet 6” = .50 feet
3.Square Feet x Depth (in feet) = Cubic Feet
(Length x Width x Depth)
4. Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards
Example: To fill an area 30 feet long
by 8 feet wide with 6 inches of mulch:
8 feet x 30 feet = 240 square feet
6 inches = .50 feet
240 square feet x .50 feet = 120 cubic feet
120 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 4.44 yards of mulch
