Exemplar 5 mark paragraph: Truman Doctrine
The Truman Doctrine was important to international relations because it increased
tension between the USA and USSR.
Truman promised that the USA would protect free peoples from subjugationmeaning the USA would stop the spread of Communism.
This was significant because it led to Marshall Aid being introduced to prevent wartorn Europe from succumbing to Communism. It also divided the world into two
competing ideologies. This was important as countries had to choose between
communism and capitalism. The USA went into Greece and Turkey in 1947 to stop
communism spreading. It was also important because it led Moscow to respond
with Cominform, which gave Stalin control of the governments of satellite states-he
used this to tell them to reject Marshall Aid.
Therefore, the Truman Doctrine was an important event as it contained Russia’s
sphere of influence.
Exemplar 5 mark paragraph: NATO
NATO was important in international relations because in international relations
because it was the first time the USA formed a military alliance ‘against’ the USSR.
In April 1949, NATO was established as the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
NATO members agreed that they would defend other NATO members if they came
under attack. It had a specific aim to defend the West against communism.
This meant that the USA had created the first military alliance in direct opposition
to the USSR. The USSR were threatened by this as it could limit their ‘sphere of
influence’ and made them vulnerable to attack. Subsequently the USSR created the
Warsaw Pact (1955), international relations were clearly breaking down as the USA
and the USSR in direct alliances against each other.
Therefore, NATO was an important event as the USA and the USSR could find
themselves in a war against the other.
