READING & PHONICS:
Identification of Synonyms & Antonyms:
Digraphs:
Synonym-a word having the same or nearly the
same meaning as another. (happy, joyful, elated)
Phonics is more than learning 26 letters of the alphabet and the sounds
they make. There are 44 sounds and
multiple letters can make the same
sounds. (c, k, & ck)
Antonym-words with opposite meaning to another word. (hot-cold, up-down)
Parent Tip: Synonym-Antonym Acting
Use acting as a way to teach children about antonyms and synonyms. Write down names of emotions on index cards such as angry, happy, sad,
frustrated, or confused. Have child select a card.
Then have child act out the emotion without revealing it. Once word has been successfully identified, try to identify possible antonyms for the
word. Examples could include: sizes of objects,
large/ small; directionality, in/up, down; geography,
plateau/mountains/hills/desert.
Consonant Digraphs-two consonants
combined to make one sound.
